Announce 2019 as the Karnataka Year to End violence against women, with substantial resources to raise awareness and support actions at all levels

The Indian Christian Women’s Movement in collaboration with the North-East Solidarity, Held a press meet at the press club at 12.30 PM.

Women form over 50 % of the population and yet are treated as minority in every sphere . Yet gender inequalities and its social, political, cultural, economic are experienced by women every day. The discriminations impact the sex ratio, quality healthcare, nutrition, economic conditions, including access to justice and allied protection against violence.

They are outraged, that no suspects have been apprehended till date, in that gruesome rape that happened in Anekal in November 2017. Domestic and gender-based-violence, sexual harassment at the workplace, continue unabated. Victim and witness protection, victim compensation, are still a far cry for the survivors of violence

Functionaries of the departments of police, women and children development, prosecution, judiciary, after-care homes, the helplines, require periodic capacity building to deliver services from a human rights approach. The systems and mechanisms are not women friendly nor sensitive.

They don’t have one crisis center per district or enough women’s police or even police stations that are women-friendly. The Nirbhaya fund remains drastically under-utilized, by the state. Victim relief must be given immediately. Law and justice be fast-tracked to as a deterrent to rape. The state agencies, need to act swiftly and publicly to infuse confidence, that women matter. There is a need for magistrates, judges, prosecutors and the police to work in convergence.

The helpline for women requires reformation, the other stakeholders like the state legal services authority, the department of women and child development need to tailor implementation of programs in consultation with the women from all walks of life.
