Millets are often referred to as Superfood and its production can be seen as an approach for sustainable agriculture and a healthy world. Multidimensional benefits associated with millets can address the issues related to nutrition security, food systems security, and farmers’ welfare.
Once a common food item on Indian plates, millets hardly find any place as cereals in modern Indian diet now, as rice and wheat have taken over as staple food. However, slowly Millets is now finding place on the dining tables. Millets are superfoods that can potentially provide a solution to several diseases and metabolic disorders. Superfoods are food items that claim to confer health benefits resulting from their exceptional nutrient density. Common millets include pearl millet (bajra), proso millet (barri), sorghum (jawar), finger millet (ragi), barley (jo), oats (jaee) and foxtail millet (kangani).
Millets are food grains having high nutritional features and health benefits and are cultivated with minimal water & inputs. They are cultivated across the country in various agro-ecological regions, having less infestation of pest and diseases and thus can be grown easily as organic crops. Consequent to the initiative of the Government of India, the United Nations has declared the year 2023 as the International Year of Millets (IYOM). This will create both domestic and global demand and enhance exports from India. To give impetus to the export of potential products as well as to remove the bottlenecks in the supply chain of nutri cereals, the Government, through Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has created Nutri Cereals Export Promotion Forum.
Top domain experts from NABARD, NIFTEM-Thanjavur, Nutrihub, LeadsConnect, ITC, GFI, Grafitec to name a few will be sharing their incisive thoughts on the millets sector at that two-day conference where the organisers expect a footfall of close to 5,000 participants, the above statements were released at press club of bangalore by Bhojaraj C N,Honorary Secretary-IMS Foundation
