Bengaluru, March 9, 2025: Narayana Nethralaya organized the Sight Saver Run at Jarakabande Reserve Forest, Ramagondanahalli, to raise awareness about glaucoma, a leading cause of irreversible blindness. The event, held as part of Glaucoma Awareness Week (March 9-15, 2025), saw participation from over 300 runners, including medical professionals, fitness enthusiasts, and the general public.
The 5K and 10K runs, set against a scenic forest trail, were flagged off by international athlete and South Asian Games champion Arjun Devaiah. The event was also attended by Gp Capt S K Mittal VSM, CEO of Narayana Nethralaya, and RJ Pradeep from 92.7 Big FM, who joined the cause to emphasize the importance of early glaucoma detection.
“We are surrounded by so much information through social media and the internet, yet it’s shocking how little we know about glaucoma. It comes without pain or warning, stealing vision quietly. Events like these help educate people about the importance of routine eye check-ups,” said Arjun Devaiah.
Glaucoma, often called the “silent thief of sight,” progresses without symptoms and primarily affects peripheral vision. By the time it is detected, significant and irreversible vision loss may have already occurred. Those over 40 years of age, individuals with a family history of glaucoma, diabetes, hypertension, or high myopia, and chronic steroid users are at a higher risk.
The event winners in both men’s and women’s categories were awarded trophies and certificates, with participants expressing appreciation for the initiative. Adding an eco-friendly touch, Narayana Nethralaya also distributed saplings to runners and planted trees at the venue, reinforcing its commitment to both eye health and environmental sustainability.
