Bengaluru, 25 April 2025 – Fortis Hospital Bannerghatta Road has successfully performed a robot-assisted bilateral total knee replacement surgery on a 63-year-old woman from Yemen, providing her with a new lease of life after five years of debilitating knee osteoarthritis. The surgery, which utilized the innovative VELYS Robotic Technology, enabled the patient to walk on the second day following the procedure, marking a remarkable recovery.
Mrs. Zamzam, the patient, had been suffering from severe knee pain for five years. Initially presenting as mild discomfort, her condition progressively worsened, severely restricting her ability to perform daily activities such as standing and walking. In addition to knee pain, she experienced lower back issues with radiating pain down her left leg, further diminishing her mobility and quality of life. Despite consulting multiple hospitals in her home country, she found no long-term relief.
Seeking a solution, Mrs. Zamzam traveled to India and consulted with Dr. Narayan Hulse, Principal Director of Orthopaedics at Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road. After a thorough evaluation, Dr. Hulse diagnosed her with advanced bilateral knee osteoarthritis and recommended a robot-assisted bilateral total knee replacement surgery. The procedure, which employed VELYS Robotic Technology, resulted in life-changing outcomes, with Mrs. Zamzam able to stand and walk with support just days after the surgery, taking significant steps toward a pain-free life.

Dr. Narayan Hulse commented on the success of the surgery, stating, “Since the introduction of VELYS robot-assisted technology for joint and knee replacements at Fortis Hospital Bannerghatta, we have completed over 150 surgeries in just four months, in addition to over 2,000 surgeries with other robotic systems. The outcomes have been highly encouraging, with patients experiencing less pain, faster recovery, and improved implant accuracy. The VELYS system enhances our ability to deliver even higher-quality care to our patients.”
Dr. Hulse further noted that Fortis Hospital has also performed over 100 robotic total hip replacements and 100 robotic partial knee replacements, making it the highest in the state, with this advanced technology ensuring greater precision during surgery and better post-operative outcomes.

Mr. Akshay Oleti, Business Head of Fortis Hospitals Bengaluru, expressed, “At Fortis Hospitals, we are committed to integrating cutting-edge medical technology to improve patient care and clinical outcomes.
