Bengaluru emerges as a strategic hub in Malaysia’s India tourism roadmap

Tourism Malaysia Sales Mission 2026 held in Bengaluru, eyes 2.1 million Indian visitors

Bengaluru reaffirmed its position as a key outbound travel hub as Tourism Malaysia successfully hosted its Sales Mission 2026 in the city on February 13. The event, held at Shangri-La Bengaluru in partnership with the Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents, brought together 49 tourism sellers from Malaysia and leading travel trade partners from Bengaluru and across Karnataka.

The mission was led by Tourism Malaysia Chairman Datuk Manoharan Periasamy, along with senior officials, underlining Malaysia’s continued focus on strengthening its footprint in South India. India remains one of Malaysia’s most important source markets, recording over 1.56 million tourist arrivals in 2025 — a 14.6% increase over the previous year. With Visit Malaysia Year 2026 on the horizon, Malaysia is targeting 2.1 million visitors from India.

Strong air connectivity continues to drive this growth, with 238 weekly direct flights operating between the two countries, including significant capacity from South Indian cities. Officials noted that enhanced connectivity has made Malaysia an increasingly accessible destination for Indian travellers.

The Consulate General of Malaysia in Chennai reiterated its support for tourism promotion initiatives across South India, highlighting tourism as a vital pillar of Malaysia–India relations. Industry networking programmes such as the sales mission were described as crucial in deepening trade partnerships and people-to-people ties.

The Bengaluru event also highlighted Malaysia’s diverse tourism offerings — from leisure and family holidays to culture, nature, MICE and wedding tourism. The mission was supported by Batik Air as the official airline partner, further strengthening travel links between India and Malaysia.
