Bengaluru, 21 September 2024-Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia are escalating public health crises globally, with over 55 million people currently living with these conditions. Alarmingly, more than 60% of those affected reside in low and middle-income countries, including India. In India alone, approximately 8.8 million adults over the age of 60 are living with dementia, reflecting a prevalence rate of 7.4% among this age group. Notably, dementia is more prevalent among females than males and is more common in rural areas compared to urban centres, with significant variation across states.
In response to the growing need for increased awareness and support, KITES Senior Care hosted Colourful Whispers, a unique and impactful art exhibition on World Alzheimer’s Day, 21 September 2024, at the Bangalore International Centre in Domlur. This poignant exhibition featured the creative works of seniors from their Dementia Care Centre, drawing attention to the important cause of dementia awareness and support.
The exhibition attracted an impressive turnout of over 500 attendees, each coming together to lend support to the vital cause of raising awareness about dementia. This large and engaged audience not only celebrated the artistic achievements of the seniors but also demonstrated a strong collective commitment to advancing the fight against this pervasive condition. The significant attendance underscored the community’s dedication to fostering understanding and empathy towards those affected by dementia, reinforcing the event’s impact and the urgent need for continued advocacy and support.
In his address, Sri M.N.Anucheth, IPS, Joint Commissioner of Traffic, Bengaluru stated, “It is both inspiring and humbling to witness the resilience and creative spirit of the seniors. Initiatives like ‘Colourful Whispers’ not only showcase the artistic abilities of individuals living with dementia but also serve as a reminder of the importance of empathy, awareness, and collective responsibility in supporting dementia care. We must continue to raise awareness and offer support to those affected by this growing health concern.”
