The NGO hosted a flash mob ahead of World Blood Cancer Day encouraged people to register as blood stem cell donors

BENGALURU, May 27, 2024: To raise awareness about blood cancer, DKMS BMST Foundation India, a non-profit organisation committed to battling blood cancer and blood disorders, teamed up with “Good Move Wellness & Studio” to host a flash mob ahead of World Blood Cancer Day (May 28).

The flash mob comprising 50 participants stormed up a buzz in Koramangala’s Nexus Mall over the weekend. This increased the curiosity amongst the patrons and enhanced their knowledge about the burden of blood cancer in India and how we can help these patients. The two-day campaign also engaged members of the community with a quiz on blood cancer which doubled up as an educative tool on the subject. To further encourage people to join hands in the battle against blood cancer, a registration drive for potential blood stem cell donors was held at the venue by DKMS-BMST.

Patrick Paul, CEO, DKMS BMST Foundation India stressed the urgency of addressing the lack of awareness about blood cancer in India. He said, “In India, over 1 lakh people are diagnosed with blood cancer or a blood disorder each year, yet only 0.09% of the population is registered as potential stem cell donors. This severe shortage is particularly challenging because patients of Indian origin have unique HLA (Human Leukocyte Antigen) characteristics that are under-represented globally. With the help of initiatives like the flash mob and registration drives, we aim to educate and encourage more individuals to register as donors, thus enhancing our efforts in the battle against blood cancer.”

Janhvi Sharma, Founder, Good Move Wellness & Studio said, “When DKMS-BMST approached me about participating in the flash mob to raise awareness for blood cancer and commemorate World Blood Cancer Day, I felt truly honored. As the saying goes, ‘To watch us dance is to hear our hearts speak,’ – this sentiment echoed in my mind, thinking about the patients battling blood cancer and blood disorders, as well as those who have bravely faced this illness. I hope our small act in the form of dance showcases our support for this noble cause and more people will come forward to register as potential lifesavers. My group and I will also register as stem cell donors by providing cheek swab samples. It’s incredible to think that a few moments of our time can give someone a second chance at life! I appreciate the efforts of organisations like DKMS-BMST who are doing their best to help those in need.”

Every 5 minutes, someone in India is diagnosed with blood cancer or a blood disorder like Thalassemia or Aplastic Anemia. Many such patients are children and young people whose only chance of recovery is a stem cell transplant. For a successful stem cell transplant, the patient needs to find an HLA (Human Leukocyte Antigen) matched donor. Most often, the majority of the patients are unable to receive a transplant due to the unavailability of a matching blood stem cell donor. With very few individuals signing up as potential blood stem cell donors, finding a matching donor is difficult. This increases the need for more people of Indian ethnicity to register themselves.

To register as a potential stem cell donor, you must be a healthy Indian adult between 18 and 55 years of age. When you are ready to register, all you need to do is complete a consent form and swab the inside of your cheeks to collect your tissue cells. Your tissue sample is then sent to the lab to be analysed and listed anonymously on the international search platform for matching stem cell donors. So far, DKMS-BMST India has registered over 1,00,000 stem cell donors in the country and facilitated 110 transplants since its inception in 2019, significantly impacting the fight against blood cancer. ಈ ಸಂಘಟನೆಯು ಅಸ್ತಿತ್ವಕ್ಕೆ ಬರುತ್ತಿದ್ದು. ಸಂಘಟನೆಯು ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಹಾಗೂ ವಿಶೇಷವಾಗಿ ಕಲ್ಯಾಣ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಕನ್ನಡ ಪರ ಸಂಘಟನೆಗಳೊಂದಿಗೆ ರಾಜ್ಯಾದ್ಯಾಂತ ನಾಡು- ನುಡಿ, ನೆಲ-ಜಲ, ಬಾಷೆ, ಉದ್ಯೋಗ, ಸಮಗ್ರ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆಗಳಿಗಾಗಿ ಹೋರಾಟಕ್ಕೆ ಸಿದ್ಧವಾಗಿದೆ. ಮತ್ತು ಶೀಘ್ರವೇ ಕಲ್ಯಾಣ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಜಿಲ್ಲಾ, ತಾಲೂಕು, ಹೋಬಳಿ, ಗ್ರಾಮ ಘಟಕಗಳನ್ನು ರಚನೆ ಮಾಡುವುದರ ಮೂಲಕ ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆಗಳಿಗೆ ತಕ್ಷಣವೇ ಸ್ಪಂದಿಸಲು ತಯಾರಾಗಿರುತ್ತೇವೆ, ಮತ್ತು ಕನ್ನಡಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಶ್ರಮಿಸುವ ಸಾಹಿತಿಗಳು, ಲೇಖಕರು, ಕವಿಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಶಾಲೆಗಳು ಹಾಗೂ ಕನ್ನಡದ ರಾಜ ಮನೆತನಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ವಿಶೇಷವಾಗಿ ಜನರಿಗೆ ಅರಿವು ಮೂಡಿಸುವ ಕೆಲಸ ನಮ್ಮದಾಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ.

ಕಲ್ಯಾಣ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ಮೂಲಭೂತ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆಗಳಾದ, ಬಡತನದಿಂದ, ಶೈಕ್ಷಣಿಕವಾಗಿ ಹಿಂದುಳಿದಿದ್ದು. ಹಾಗೂ ಕೈಗಾರಿಕಾ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರಗಳಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ಸಹ ಹಿಂದೆ ಉಳಿದಿದ್ದು ಇರುತ್ತದೆ. ವಿಶೇಷವಾಗಿ ಕಲ್ಯಾಣ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಅನೇಕ ರಾಜ ಮನೆತನಗಳು ಆಳಿದ ಇತಿಹಾಸವಿದೆ. ಸರ್ಕಾರವು ಇಂತಹ ವಿಷಯಗಳನ್ನು ಪಠ್ಯ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸೇರಿಸಬೇಕು.

ಹಾಗೂ ಕಲ್ಯಾಣ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ಭಾಗದ ಯಾದಗಿರಿ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯ, ಸುರಪುರ ಸಂಸ್ಥಾನದ ಸಮಗ್ರ ಅಧ್ಯಯನಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ನಾಲ್ವಡಿ ರಾಜಾ ವೆಂಕಟಪ್ಪ ನಾಯಕರ ಹೆಸರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಅಧ್ಯಯನ ಪೀಠ ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಬೇಕು, ಹಾಗೂ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೀಯ ಹಬ್ಬಗಳ ಪ್ರಯುಕ್ತ ಕಲ್ಯಾಣ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಅನೇಕ ರಾಜ ಮನೆತನಗಳು ಸ್ಥಬ್ದ ಚಿತ್ರಗಳನ್ನು ಮೆರವಣಿಗೆ ಮಾಡಿಸುವಂತೆ ರಾಜ್ಯ ಸರ್ಕಾರವು ಕೇಂದ್ರ ಸರ್ಕಾರಕ್ಕೆ ಶಿಫಾರಸ್ಸು ಮಾಡಬೇಕು.

Intl seminar on role of biomechanics in diabetic foot treatment

BENGALURU: FootSecure, a phygital podiatry platform, conducted a 3K diabetic foot awareness walkathon on May 26 in Bengaluru.

Foot Secure, along with the Indian Institute of Science, had organized a walkathon from Foot Secure Malleswaram to JN Tata Auditorium, IISc, to raise awareness about the significance of timely podiatric intervention in diabetic foot management.

The organizing committee also held a two day Podocon—Biomechanics of Diabetic Foot Conference at JN Tata Auditorium. Dr Shalini Rajneesh, Addnl. Chief Secretary, was the chief guest during the inaugural session. Capt. Naveen Nagappa, an ex-serviceman of the Indian Army and a Kargil war hero, was the guest of honurour on 25th . Capt. Naveen Nagappa shared his experiences of the war, and how he sustained multiple surgeries on his legs, and his resilience.

This is the 6th edition of PODOCON. About 300 delegates from India and neighbouring countries, encompassing a diverse group of professionals such as diabetic foot surgeons, orthopaedic surgeons, plastic surgeons, diabetologists, endocrinologists, podiatrists, physicians, entrepreneurs, key opinion leaders, researchers, innovators, and decision-makers, are attended the conference.

The conference also highlighted significant advancements in wound care dressings and regenerative medicine and discussed the management of Charcot Foot. A scientific assembly featuring the panels and symposia were showcased pioneering research from around the world.

“We can prevent 80 per cent of these amputations if we intervene at the right time, and biomechanics play an important role in it,” pointed out Dr Sanjay Sharma, a renowned podiatric surgeon and founder of Foot Secure, which is working towards applying biomechanics principles in diabetic foot management. “There is a strong need to provide clinicians with the required knowledge and insights so that diabetic patients receive the right intervention and amputations are prevented,” he added

“The Sanskrit word for footwear is paadaraksha—those that protect our feet. We need that more than ever now, with the impending threat of diabetic foot ulcers. We have undertaken three efforts, one to provide all-mechanical dynamic self-offloading footwear that can be customized with precision for an individual; a digital podiatry clinic to monitor the feet of people at scale; and to develop a foot digital twin with minimally invasive data acquisition. We are hoping that these efforts will protect the feet that help us stand and walk,” said Dr. Anant Suresh, Dean, IISc.

Podiatry is a branch of medicine that exclusively studies, diagnoses, and provides medical and surgical treatment for disorders of the foot and ankle. Unfortunately, biomechanics and podiatry have not received due attention in India, in the treatment of Diabetic Foot Conditions. According to estimates, 140,000 major lower limb amputations are being carried out among diabetic patients in India annually. If minor amputations, such as toes and other parts of the limb, are taken into consideration, then the number of cases crosses 1.4 million per year.
