CANCER: What are the common cancers and how to spot them?

What are the common cancers and how to spot them?
Cancer occurs due to abnormal proliferation of cells in the body. The primary factor driving the formation of cancer cells is the mutation or alteration of the cell’s genetic material. Although cancer can occur in anyone, there are certain differences in the incidence of types of cancer between men and women.

Common cancers among women include:
Breast cancer: Screening in the form of mammogram is recommended to all women, to pick up the disease in nascent stages when the person is asymptomatic. The disease manifests as painless lump in the breast, skin changes, nipple discharge, and lump in the axilla. Diagnosis is made by imaging (diagnostic mammogram) and confirmed by a biopsy.
Cervical cancer: Screening in the form of PAP smear is recommended to diagnose the condition in early stages. The disease manifests as irregular menses, intermenstrual bleeding (i.e., bleeding in between the menses cycle), bleeding after sexual intercourse, foul smelling vaginal discharge. The disease is initially identified by a PAP smear. Positive results are followed with colposcopy and biopsy.

Commonly occurring cancers irrespective of sex include:
Oropharyngeal cancer: Common among tobacco chewers. There’s no specific screening test. Disease is usually picked up by a routine dental and oral cavity exam. If symptoms arise, there could be painless ulcer, soreness of mouth, lump in the neck, difficulty swallowing. Diagnosis is confirmed by biopsy of the lesion.
Lung cancer: Usually arises in long term smokers. Symptoms include long standing cough, coughing up blood, weight loss and fatigue, chest pain, recurrent chest infections. Diagnosis is done by imaging of the chest and confirmed by a biopsy.
Prostate cancer: Usually asymptomatic in initial stages. Symptoms, if present include urinary urgency, urinary frequency, and pain during urination, passing blood in urine. Sometimes disease is diagnosed in advanced stage by which time, metastases would have occurred. The symptoms of metastases (distant spread) include bone pain (especially the back), swelling of legs, weight loss. If the disease is suspected, the doctor will suggest DRE (Digital Rectal Exam) to assess prostate, PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) test, imaging in the form of MRI, and biopsy of the prostate.
Stomach cancer: Usually asymptomatic in initial stages. Symptoms start when the disease has already progressed. Symptoms include vomiting, abdominal pain, indigestion, loss of appetite and weight, passing black coloured stools. Diagnosis is picked up by the endoscopy and is confirmed by biopsy. The patient may be subjected to imaging to stage the disease, so that management is planned accordingly.
Blood cancer: Common in men than in women. There are various types of blood cancers of which lymphoma is common. Symptoms include swelling of the lymph nodes, long standing fever, night sweats, bleeding from gums and weight loss. Diagnostic tests include blood film and visualization under microscope, blood counts and imaging studies. This is followed by procedures like biopsy of lymph node and/or bone marrow aspiration and biopsy.
It’s important that the cancers are diagnosed when they are in nascent stage so that treatment could yield high cure rate and minimize morbidity associated with cancer. Please have a regular follow up and health checks with your primary care physician to stay healthy.

“If the BNPL ecosystem is targeted well towards the population who still don’t possess credit cards, it is a massive opportunity…”, Suhail Sameer, CEO, BharatPe at FinTech Festival India

*Three day FinTech Festival India is being held between March 1-3; organized by Constellar and supported by Niti Aayog and six central ministries
Discussions to revolve around CBDCs, De-Fi, Data Analytics, RegTech, Lending

Mumbai, March 2, 2022: FinTech Festival India, the country’s largest FinTech event is underway with its digital edition between March 1 and 3, organized by Constellar Exhibitions (a subsidiary of TEMASEK and Singapore Press Holdings which organizes Singapore FinTech Festival) and supported by Niti Aayog and six central government ministries.
Speaking on the second day of the conference, Suhail Sameer, CEO, BharatPe, said, “If the BNPL ecosystem is targeted well towards the population who still don’t possess credit cards, it is a massive opportunity, and we can leapfrog the number of cards present in the country given the fact that there are 2.5 million card terminals as compared to 25 million QR code terminals.”
“One of the challenge that BNPL solves is accessibility to smaller but frequent loans, which banks do not cater to as there is a high cost of underwriting, process, and infrastructure.” He added.
On financial inclusion, Mr. Sameer further added, “Last five to six years have laid down the backbone of financial inclusion in the country; UPI has reached everywhere, digital banking licenses are being talked about. The combination of credit on UPI, BNPL, branchless banking will drive the next big leap on inclusion… I do see credit inclusion at a minimum, investment product inclusion at a minimum likely to go multiple fold over the next four to five years.”
Talking about the success of Buy Now and Pay Later model over credit cards, Vikas Bansal, Director, Amazon Pay India, said, “Buy Now and Pay Later model is online and it’s completely embedded into the purchase and retail journey of consumers. It is completely digital and instead of paperwork, one can sign up in less than 60 seconds. Finally people who could not be underwritten earlier because of data are now getting into the credit fold owing to BNPL. It’s good for customers as one can now get into the credit system early and build the credit profile.”
The three day digital conference is being attended by some well-known stalwarts such as Suhail Sameer, Chief Executive Officer, BharatPe, Sonal Kapoor, Director – Financial Services, Flipkart, Vikas Bansal, Director, Amazon Pay India, Sabyasachi Goswami, Chief Business Officer, Perfios and Siddharth Dhamija, Chief Growth Officer, Signzy; amongst others.

The digital conference will be followed by the Physical Edition from 20th to 22nd July, 2022 at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi.

FinTech Festival India is the country’s largest FinTech confluence. It is witnessing participation from over 500 Indian and global leaders and 12,000+ delegates. Representatives from Brazil, Israel, UK, Russia, Canada, Finland, Japan, and Singapore among others also attended.
The conferences are being supported by Government of India’s Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY), Ministry of Small & Medium Enterprise (MSME),

The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (Ministry of Commerce and Industry), Broadcast Engineering Consultants India Limited ( A Government of India Enterprise – Under Ministry of Information & Broadcasting) and Startup India (Department for promotion of Industry and Internal Trade & Invest India). It has also received support from the Government of Tamil Nadu, Government of Karnataka and Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu Limited (ELCOT).
Earlier FinTech Festival India organized physical and digital format Micro Experience Conferences in Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai, Gift City (Ahmedabad) and Pune.
