Doctors report 30% surge in heart attacks in Bengaluru in late stages of lockdown

Many patients have been delaying hospital treatment after suffering a heart attack due to fear of Covid infection, and therefore having a complicated course of recovery
BENGALURU / Sept 28, 2020 – Doctors have reported a 30 percent surge in cases of heart attacks in Bengaluru in the last two months, possibly related to factors like mental stress, economic difficulties, a sedentary lifestyle and bad diet imposed by the lockdown. Many heart attack victims have also been delaying coming to a hospital due to fear of Covid infection and therefore having a complicated course of recovery because of lack of timely treatment, said Dr. Sreekanth Shetty, Head – Interventional Cardiology, Sakra World Hospital.
Dr. Sreekanth Shetty said: “In the first few month of the lockdown, there was a drastic fall in the number of heart attack patients. There were many reasons for this, like reduced stress levels due to staying at home and getting more rest and heart attack victims not coming to hospitals for treatment due to Covid fears. Lack of prompt care saw a spike in sudden deaths at home. However, the wheel has turned full circle. As levels of mental stress, frustration and insecurities among people rise due to financial anxiety, job losses, salary cuts, unregulated working hours, etc., we are now witnessing a surge in heart-attack cases in the late phase of the pandemic. This is due to the pandemic induced stress on people.”
He added: “At Sakra hospital, we have experienced a disproportionate rise in heart attack hospitalizations. In fact, there has been a 30 percent increase in the number of heart attack patients coming for treatment in the months of August and September, compared to the same period last year. While heart patients are still shying away from elective procedures, admissions in emergency ward have risen for heart attacks.”

Dr. Shetty said: “Patients with pre-existing heart disease are at the highest risk of mortality due to Covid infection. It has been seen to affect the heart in various ways. One, when the lung is severely affected, extremely low oxygen levels depress functioning of the heart. Two, the virus can cause low blood pressure which in turn can also affect the heart. Third, the virus can trigger a severe inflammatory response which also involves the heart. Fourth, Covid can cause clotting in the arteries and veins of the body, leading to heart attacks, brain strokes, limb gangrene, deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. Covid can also directly affect the heart, causing myocarditis, a potentially life-threatening condition. Also, certain types of heart arrhythmias are seen to happen in Covid patients which can cause death. Worse, Covid can affect the heart in patients with no prior cardiovascular problems and they can face the same complications.”
“Due to fear of the infection, many heart patients have restricted themselves from coming for their scheduled hospital visits. Some have availed of video consultations to take guidance. Fortunately, most patients are conscious of the need to continue their medications and we have not come across any heart patient defaulting on medication during the pandemic. Also, availability of medicines has not been a problem in this period,” said Dr. Shetty.
He added: “There are many things that people with heart condition can do to limit their risk of infection. Avoid people who are sick and keep a two-meter distance from other individuals, wherever possible. Wash hands thoroughly with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds. Wear appropriate masks but avoid those with a valve. Stay at home as much as possible and work from home if feasible. Continue to take prescription medications without fail, including for blood pressure and diabetes. Do not stop blood thinners if you are on them. In case of symptoms suggestive a new cardiac event, visit the hospital without hesitation.”

57% Spike in Cardiovascular Problems during Lockdown

  • Dr Partap Chauhan of Jiva Ayurveda says that during the complete lockdown, they got 322 cases of CVDs and post-lockdown, Jiva doctors have consulted around 776 cases through their telemedicine centre and clinics
  • The availability of quality medical care and the fear of contagion is one of the few common causes for the worsening condition of patients with pre-existing heart problems

Sept 25, 2020 – Respiratory disorders caused by COVID-19 took centre-stage during the pandemic, overshadowing other burgeoning health issues, particularly cardiovascular disorders (CVDs). Incidences of new-onset and worsening heart problems are being highlighted by medical experts across the world. A 2019 report published by the American Heart Association placed India’s burden of heart disorders at a worrisome 54.5 million people, with one in four deaths attributable to CVDs such as Ischemic Heart Disorder or Stroke. With the recent uptick in heart diseases over the last few months, people around the world, especially in India, are faced with the likelihood of cardiovascular concerns at a large scale in the near future.

Dr Partap ChauhanDirectorJiva Ayurveda said, “Before lockdown, our doctors consulted 748 cases for cardiovascular diseases, during the complete lockdown, we got 322 cases of CVDs and post-lockdown, our doctors have consulted around 776 cases through our telemedicine centre and clinics.”

Understanding the causes behind the surge

The availability of quality medical care and the fear of contagion is one of the few common causes for the worsening condition of patients with pre-existing heart problems. In addition to that, the sudden and disproportionate increase in causative factors such as stress, anxiety, obesity, and physical inactivity is pushing the pre-CVD segment of people in their late 40s and with existing co-morbidities into becoming new patients of CVD.

Isolation, loss of employment, financial dilemmas, and the emotional burden of being away from family members or bereavement have made matters worse.

Dr Chauhan added, “The psychological effects (loneliness, stress, anxiety, isolation, unemployment fear and economic burden) of the pandemic combined with other lifestyle factors like smoking and drinking, irregular eating habits, unhealthy diet and physical inactivity may increase CVD cases during the pandemic.”

Dissecting the trend of recent CVD cases

During the initial days of the lockdown, people were relieved of the mundane burdens of daily commutes and work stress, they also had more time with their families which positively impact heart health. Unfortunately, as days progressed, the usual causes of stress were replaced by financial burdens, unemployment, further uncertainties, boredom, and lack of sleep which had a cumulative adverse effect on cardiovascular health.

“A major shift in the trend of CVDs observed during the lockdown was that people in their 30-40s were getting heart attacks and suffering from other cardiac problems, especially in the metros like Delhi and Mumbai. At Jiva, we had the maximum number of cases from the Maharashtra region (150+ cases), followed by Delhi (200+ cases), Uttar Pradesh (300+ cases) and Haryana (110+ cases), of which around 1000 were males and 480 were females,” added Dr Chauhan.

It must be noted that most of these cases also had an observable trend in co-morbidity. Doctors consulted 670 cases for hypertension, followed by 216 cases of Hypercholesterolemia and 174 cases of Hridroga (other heart diseases).

Protecting the heart with Ayurveda: Preventive and curative solutions

Stress, bad diet, and emotional turmoil can take a toll on the heart. Over a period, it becomes weak and coupled with incorrect lifestyle choices such as smoking, drinking alcohol or eating junk food, the high risk of developing heart diseases goes up. Adopting an Ayurvedic lifestyle and adding Ayurvedic herbs in your daily routine can help.

Practice yoga and pranayama to reduce stress levels. A gentle head massage or full body massage with oil relieves tension and reduces the load on your heart. Switch off highly charged TV broadcasts if it is causing you stress. Spend time cultivating what actually makes you happy, healthy and gives you peace,” advised Dr Chauhan.

Ayurvedic herbs are also known to be effective in keeping the heart healthy. Here are a couple of herbal recipes that doctors at Jiva commonly recommend for a healthy heart.

Arjun ki Chaal (White Marudah): Boil half a spoon of Arjun ki Chaal in a cup of water for 10-15 minutes on a low flame till it is reduced to half a cup and drink it.

Lehsun (Garlic): Boil a cup of milk with a garlic clove, cinnamon, honey, and drink in the morning. You can also start your day by eating a clove of garlic to enjoy its heart-friendly benefits.

Jiva Ayurveda is one of the leading Ayurvedic telemedicine organizations in the world with over 8,000 daily consultations. Over the years, thousands of heart patients have benefited from personalized treatment at Jiva. Case in point, Sanjay Lal, a 49-year-old resident of Agra reported complete relief in his heart condition (Angina with Dyslipidemia) after three months of treatment at Jiva.

Indira IVF is now in 92 centres across India-Improving accessibility for couples seeking treatment for infertility

  • Adds 4 new centres (Nanded, Warangal, Sirsa and Gulbarga) in the first half of FY20-21-

Mumbai, September 24, 2020: Indira IVF, the largest player in the infertility treatment space in India, in its efforts to provide affordable and best in class treatment to couples seeking infertility treatment has added four new centers in Tier-III cities namely, Nanded, Warangal, Sirsa and Gulbarga in the first half of FY20-21. The infertility specialist clinics chain now runs 92 centres across the country helping desirous couples fulfil their dream of parenthood.

Indira IVF’s intent for their patients’ wellbeing goes beyond their reproductive health, and hence, abiding by the guidelines laid by the government, the organization had shut down all their treatment centers for over two months. On June 3, 2020, Indira IVF once again opened its doors to aspiring couples, and is optimistic that the pre-COVID volume of IVF procedures will restore by December this year. Currently, all Indira IVF centers strictly adhere to government protocols of running the centers and ensures that the utmost safety standards are maintained for their staff and patients visiting the clinic.

Speaking on the development Dr. Kshitiz Murdia-CEO, Indira IVF said, “We are living in unprecedented times and everyone is dealing with a number of challenges and uncertainties in their lives. The inability to bear children can be emotionally distressing for desirous families. Living by our vision to make infertility treatment affordable and accessible to all desirous couples, we have improved our reach by adding four more centers.”

He added, “We are witnessing a huge influx of inquiries from Tier II and Tier III cities. The growing awareness, knowledge about IVF and fertility issues has helped the sector to grow and craft a niche segment in the healthcare space. Young individuals and couples have become increasingly cognizant of their reproductive health and constitute a major share of all IVF procedures carried out at Indira IVF.”
Indira IVF today is the largest and the most recognized fertility chains of hospitals in the country. Armed with state-of-the-art infrastructure, Indira IVF helps countless couples navigate the often-complicated journey of infertility and ultimately realize their dream of starting a family.
