Bengaluru, July 31,2020 : Lung cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer across the world (11.6% of the total cases) across both males and females, and the leading cause of cancer-related deaths (18.4% of the total cancer deaths). Its incidence and mortality is rapidly growing worldwide. The reasons are complex but reflect both aging and growth of the population.
Small cell lung cancer occurs in 20% of all lung cancer cases. Its treatment is focussed on chemotherapy with or without radiation therapy. For non-small-cell lung cancer, which is the most common type of lung cancer, chemotherapy, immunotherapy and oral biologic therapies are given.
The Covid-19 pandemic is one of the greatest challenges that modern medicine has ever faced. Amongst all the panic generated by Covid, one should not lose sight of the fact that lung cancer is a deadly disease and its treatment cannot wait despite the pandemic because of the aggressive nature of the disease.
Lung cancer patients are not more susceptible to the Covid virus compared to other people. However, if they get infected, they are more likely to get complications because of their underlying health condition.
To avoid the risk of Covid infection, lung cancer patients and their families should strictly follow all measures advised for the general public. Social distancing, hygiene and face masks are universal precautions that should be taken by them.
The treatment of lung cancer has seen pathbreaking research in the past decade, with several new molecularly targeted therapies and immunotherapy now available. Molecular targeted therapies which are based on newer diagnostic modalities like NGS (next generation sequencing) are increasingly used in lung cancer now. These are much safer and do not require frequent medical monitoring. In the last few months, the US FDA has approved several new oral targeted drugs for lung cancer. In India, these may also be available soon.

based on Bengaluru based Scientist Dr. Rajah Vijay Kumar’s invention
A powerful but small device that attacks and disables Coronavirus from infecting people under the Brand name Forbes CORONAGUARD (Powered by SHYCOCAN)
Covid19 continues to spread rapidly in India and across the world. At the last count over 16 million people have been infected with the deadly virus globally and 50,000 new cases have emerged in India in the last 24 hours. Besides the loss of lives, this epidemic has been a crushing blow to the economy, pushing people into joblessness and poverty. But now an invention from a scientist in Bengaluru, India Dr. Rajah Vijay Kumar promises to change all that. And fast. Dr. Rajah Vijay Kumar has invented the Scalene Hypercharge Corona Canon (SHYCOCAN) a powerful device that attacks and disables Coronavirus, SHYCOCAN is CE marked (EU- Class I) and has been cleared by US FDA under ‘Enforcement Policy for Sterilizers, Disinfectant Devices and Air Purifiers during the COVID 19 Public Health Emergency’. This device will be manufactured and marketed in India by Eureka Forbes under the brand name FORBES CORONAGUARD (Powered by SHYCOCAN).
While the pandemic continues to rage globally, plans revolving primarily around social distancing and personal hygiene are afoot thus raising wide-spread concern with respect to the reopening of schools, places of worship and restaurants among other workplaces. In lieu of this, FORBES CORONAGUARD aims to provide real time protection against infection from coronavirus in closed spaces. This is a revolutionary virulence prevention device which promises to neutralize and disable 99.9% of coronavirus in the air surfaces, within closed indoor spaces.
In order to understand how FORBES CORONAGUARD works, one needs to understand how the COVID 19 Virus spreads. Coronavirus spreads between people who are in close contact with one another. Droplets that are produced when an infected person talks, coughs or sneezes may infect a normal person by possible inhalation into their lungs. The attachment of the SARS-CoV-2 to the host cell receptor is caused by the spike protein (S-protein). The Spike Protein seeks the host cell receptors thereby infecting people by multiplying thereafter.
Announcing it to the media, Marzin R. Shroff, CEO & Managing Director Eureka Forbes said, “For over 38 years, we at Eureka Forbes have been protecting Indians against harmful viruses and bacteria in water, air and surfaces. We are privileged to be working together with Dr. Rajah Vijay Kumar in bringing Forbes Coronaguard to India. It is a device that offers real time protection against infection from the Coronavirus within closed spaces. Our vision is to contain the spread of this disease and to make a positive difference to the lives of millions of Indians first, and then to the rest of the world.”
“An important feature of this technology is that only the Corona family of viruses is targeted, while bacteria, fungi or other eco-friendly micro-organisms are not, allowing for 24/7, safe deployment,” quoted Dr. Rajah Vijay Kumar.
“We intend on prioritising deployment of the CORONAGUARD in all high-risk and essential service environments first. This will help create ‘safer zones’ in homes, health care facilities, grocery and essential stores, restaurants & hotels, schools, colleges, places of worship, residential, corporate, industrial and sporting environments among others according to Mr Shroff. He added, it is a very practical and complimentary solution – along with the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), where necessary – to reduce burdens of indefinite social distancing”.
“While we go through the final ratifications and necessary approvals, the commercial production of CoronaGuard is expected by August end/early September 2020. We are looking at a launch and pre-bookings that should open in Mid-August” said Mr. Shroff.
Initiatives surrounding the R&D on the device prototype began in April 2019, to stem the decline in work force productivity due to the common cold and seasonal Influenza in Scalene’s facilities. Over the last 6 months, Dr. Rajah Vijay Kumar and his team have worked tirelessly, and successfully completed extensive EU-CE – mandated safety testing undertaken by the Underwriters Laboratories (UL). Scalene has since obtained the CE Mark with Class I designation, enabling the expedited manufacture, distribution, and sales in all CE-compliant countries/markets, including India. US FDA ‘Enforcement Policy for Sterilizers, Disinfectant Devices, and Air Purifiers During the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) Public Health Emergency approved it together with multiple certifications from prestigious international laboratories, it is proven to be safe for infants, pregnant mothers and others with no side effects and/or interference with other electronic devices.
