Pandemic has brought out misery of lack of access to menstrual hygiene, says Dr Hema Divakar

‘Will not rest till every girl and woman is given access to menstrual health’

Bengaluru: World Menstrual Hygiene Day is today and the theme for 2020 is ‘Periods in Pandemic’. Unfortunately, due to lop sided policies and misplaced priorities, majority of 300 million women in India are facing untold misery because of difficulties in getting access to menstrual hygiene products.

May 28 has been chosen as World Menstrual Hygiene Day because on an average the menstrual cycle for most women is 28 days and the menstruation period for most women is for five days.

Even today, despite availability of several menstrual hygiene products like sanitary napkins, tampons, and menstrual cups, 80% of Indian women don’t use the most basic form of menstrual protection because they have no means to access them.

Dr.Hema Divakar, Medical Director of Divakars Specialty Hospital; CEO & Chairperson, ARTIST and policy advisor to the Union Health Ministry spoke on this aspect of access to hygiene devices during a webinar on menstrual hygiene day arranged by India’s premier industry body ASSOCHAM today.

“Over 300 million women have to deal with menstrual issues every month and majority of them have been facing difficulties in getting menstrual hygiene products across India during this pandemic,” Dr.Hema said at the ASSOCHAM meeting. “While focus has been on migrants and business activities, women’s hygiene issues are not getting required attention,” she rued.

The webinar on ‘Menstrual Health and Hygiene Management During COVID-19’ saw participation of Dr.Zoya Ali Rizvi, Deputy Commissioner (Adolescent Health)  Ministry of Health & Family Welfare Government of India, Dr.Pratibha Singh from UNICEF India and Abhilasha Sood from UN Women India.

Women face inconvenience and health risks for not having access to sanitary napkins. Last year, at the 62nd All India Congress of Obstetrics & Gynaecology held in Bengaluru in January 2019, Guinness World record was created with a display of sanitary pads to raise awareness about the essentiality of access to sanitary pads.

The longest line of sanitary pads with the figure of the uterus in the middle was lined up for the same. About 10,105 sanitary pads measuring about 1,078 meters were lined up for the record as part of the AICOG 2019.

Menstrual hygiene is vital to the empowerment and well-being of women and girls. The day is to highlight menstruation with dignity and about ensuring women and girls live in an environment that values and supports their ability to manage menstrual hygiene.

Menstruation is a normal biological process and is key in maintaining the reproduction health of a woman. Taking care during menstruation is as important as taking care of day to day activities. A little negligence in menstrual hygiene management can cause grievous harm to a woman’s body.

Dr.Hema Divakar tells women that “health and menstrual hygiene are extremely important. Use menstrual cup, the modern device or sanitary pads but maintain hygiene.” Dr.Divakar steers and guides Manyata and Parivartan, two important campaigns focused on women’s health and reproductive rights.

Dr.Hema Divakar’s resolve is that “we will not rest till every girl and every women gets access to menstrual hygiene awareness and products.”

Healthium MedTech clocks its 3rd Innovation in 6 months with TRUSHIELD AMG – first of its kind Anti-Microbial gloves in India

Strengthens its support to an “Atmanirbhar India” by promoting indigenous technology on a global scale with 52 patents in India and the U.S

28th May 2020, India: Healthium Medtech, one of the largest medical device companies in India, today announced the launch of the first of its kind Anti-Microbial Gloves, TruShield. Manufactured at Kunigal, Karnataka, these Anti-Microbial Gloves (AMGs) are made from a patented technology using a Quaternary Ammonium Compound that kills microbes and provides 99.99% protection for Healthcare professionals (HCPs) and patients up to 8 hours.

The Anti-Microbial gloves are the 3rd Innovative launch for Healthium in the last 6 months. The company had launched Truglyde SN2355, a suture needles combination specially created for COMOC MG, an Innovative surgical technique to manage Postpartum Hemorrhage (PPH), which is one of the largest causes for maternal mortality. Healthium also launched the largest shoulder range of Arthroscopic devices in India benefitting Arthroscopy surgeons through simplified and functional patented designs. The Company holds 52 patents in India and the U.S.

Speaking on the occasion, Anish Bafna, Group Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director, Healthium said, “We constantly endeavor to simplify for the medical fraternity through innovative precision based medical devices manufactured indigenously across our 5 facilities in India. 85%of medical devices in India are imported. As an Indian player delivering to global standards with US FDA (510k), CE and ISO approvals and 52 patents in India and U.S, we are working relentlessly to reduce the dependence on imported technology and support a self-reliant (Atmanirbhar) India. With the launch of Trushield AMG, we would like to further protect the hands that save lives”

The surgical gloves available today, do not provide complete protection as they merely act as a passive barrier. Doctors are at particular riskbecause their work demands close contact with patients who may be harboring pathogenic microbes.

Breaching of gloves during surgery when unnoticed by the operating surgeons brings an occult risk to the surgeon as well as the patients. Even the efficacy of scrubbing before surgery begins to fade in 3 hours and post 5 hours into surgery, contamination reaches pre-scrub levels. This makes both surgeons and patients vulnerable.

Speaking at the Launch, Dr Ashok Moharana, Chief Medical Officer at Healthium Medtech said, “Studies have shown that Surgical Site Infections account for 15% of all Healthcare Associated Infection (HAI) and 37%of HAI in surgical patients, putting patients at risk. On the other hand, over 45% Surgeons’ gloves get breached mostly on non-dominant hands and only 25%notice the puncture during surgery, bringing an occult risk for HCPs. Enhancing protection from contact transmission for an extended duration is an unmet need today and to address this, we have launched TRUSHIELD Anti-microbial gloves. With a novel mechanism of action, this is an effective solution that protects both HCPs and patients against a range of microbes. TRISHIELD AMG is non-leaching and offers 99.99% microbicidal protection lasting up to 8 hrs.”

Ehsan Huq, SVP – Commercial, Healthium Medtech said, “Collaboration is a core value at Healthium; launching TRUSHIELD AMG during the lockdown validates our commitment to partner with surgeons and their patients in successful outcomes. Improving access is our vision; TRUSHIELD AMG is supported by the Healthium team and available through our extensive distribution footprint, covering in excess of 500 towns and cities in India.”

Projects Today Survey – Projects Scenario in post COVID-19 era

Funds & Labour to slowdown re-booting process

Projects Today, India’s largest online database of new and ongoing projects in India, conducted a nationwide survey of experts in the project fraternity to pick their brain and learn their views on the current situation and the likely projects investment scenario in major sectors during the post-lockdown period. In all, 233 leaders, a part of the Indian project fraternity (promoters, architects, consultants and contractors) selected from across India participated in the Survey.

A majority of the participants agreed that barring pharmaceuticals and healthcare all other sectors are affected by the current lockdown and it would take a while for these units to restart functioning after the lockdown is lifted.

The 60+ days’ nationwide lockdown has brought the entire economy to a standstill. Producers, Consumers and the Government all are uncertain when the pandemic will slow down or when factories and offices can commence functioning.

India witnessed one of the longest and unprecedented lockdowns seen across the world, and also saw reverse migration of millions of labourers from their worktown to hometown fearing hunger, exposure to the virus and uncertain future.

As per the Survey, for promoters the main hurdles in kick starting their halted projects are getting adequate funds at reasonable interest, finding labourers matching the skills of those who have left for their hometown and procuring the required raw materials and machineries at the project site. The nationwide lockdown has completely disintegrated the supply chain network. It will take a while to reorganise the same. The other three constituents of the projex world – Architects, Consultants and Contractors — said their immediate priority would be, to complete the projects in hand and try to retain their current clients.

The Survey participants expect the “Work from Home” culture to continue during the post COVID-19 era. Hence, they see demand for housing (bigger houses) to go up in the long run. On the other side, they think demand for Commercial space will undergo some change as large companies would look for disintegrating their offices – instead of having one centralised office, setting up more smaller offices to reduce the commuting time and adopt the new norms work culture.

As far as Advantage India is concerned around 27.9 percent of the Survey participants said there is no advantage India, because the country will take at least next two to three years to come out of the current economic moribund. Further, they opined that India does not possess the key advantages China has – high-class infrastructure, liberal labour laws and very industrial-friendly policies. On the positive side, a whopping 69 percent of the Survey respondents agreed that India does have an opportunity to emerge as a winner on the other side of COVID-19 at least in a couple of sectors like Pharmaceuticals, Medical Equipment, Automobiles, Textiles, etc.

To re-boot the economy, the Government of India presented a whopping Rs 20,00,000 crore economic stimulus involving both fiscal and monetary measures. It also proposed some path breaking reforms in the agriculture, mining, power distribution, health and education sectors. It has also assured to bring in the long-delayed labour reforms soon. How far all these measures will mitigate the current economic pain and will put India once again on the growth path will depend on the timely and effective implementation of the proposals and revival in the domestic demand.

Projex in Hotspot Districts

As per Projects Today, of the 130 Red Zone districts, 108 have projects investment and as of 31 March 2020, there were 29,255 projects entailing a total investment of Rs 51,07,831 crore. Of this, 8,917 projects worth Rs 21,11,985 crore were under various stages of implementation, but are currently halted due to the nationwide lockdown. Around 62.9 percent of such projex are owned by government agencies and the balance 37.1 percent is by private companies.

Among the hotspot districts, Mumbai and Mumbai Suburban together account for 12.5 percent of the total under-execution projects found in the hotspot districts of India. Mumbai is also the leading district in terms of virus-affected people and death toll.
