Amazon India Launches Skill Development Program on World Youth Skill Day

The pilot program is aimed at engaging, training and upskilling 1000 youth; under National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS)

Bangalore, July 14, 2020: Amazon India has launched a skilling program under the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS), across its Fulfilment Centres in India. The company aims at training youth whose learning journey or placement was impacted due to Covid-19 pandemic. Apprentices will be identified through various sources including NSDC-accredited training centers (DDU-GKY Centers) and the NSDC Skilling Database. This program will enable Amazon India to contribute to the government’s commitment towards skilling and increasing employability of the apprentices.

During the 6-month program, the apprentices will be trained on Warehousing and Inventory Management skills for the roles of warehouse associates and process associates. The curriculum will consist of a mix of classroom sessions, on-the-job learning and assessments held at the fulfilment centres in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Hyderabad. All training sessions will be conducted with high standard of preventive health and safety measures including social distancing and regular sanitization.

The apprentices will receive a monthly-stipend in line with guidelines mandated under NAPS.  At the end of the program, apprentices will be assessed by the Logistics Sector Skill Council and post the assessment they will receive a certification. After certification, the apprentices will be eligible to be considered for available seasonal and full time employment opportunities.

“At Amazon, our business is naturally aligned to government’s priorities of enabling skilling and job creation. For us skilling is not only meaningful but a sustainable and long-term approach. We are deeply invested in creating opportunities for the youth which will help them secure gainful and skilled employment in the future. We are excited to launch the pilot program with 1000 apprentices at our Fulfilment Centres and then scale further with time,” said Swati Rustagi, Director of Human Resources, Amazon India Operations.

It is encouraging to see large job creators like Amazon furthering our vision to enhance employability of the youth. We are confident that this apprentice program will help create a skilled workforce which will greatly benefit our communities and the economy,” said Anita Srivastava, Joint Director, Ministry of Skill Development And Entrepreneurship.

Through various initiatives, Amazon has continued to offer skilling and training opportunities to the youth. In September 2019, the company had announced its partnership with Sol’s ARC, an NGO, to train and create employment opportunities for young adults with Autism & Intellectual Disabilities. As it continues to expand its fulfilment infrastructure, the company has consistently worked towards creating work opportunities for the youth and equipping them with technological and operational skills.

Amazon India Successfully Eliminates 100% Single-Use Plastic in Packaging across its Fulfilment Centers

Bangalore, June 29, 2020 – Amazon India today announced that it has achieved a significant milestone in its efforts towards sustainability by eliminating all single-use plastic in packaging originating from its 50+ fulfilment centers in India. In September 2019 the company had pledged to meet this goal in an accelerated timeframe by June 2020, in an effort to build an environmentally sustainable supply chain.

Amazon India has taken several steps to achieve complete elimination of single-use plastic in its own fulfilment network. The first milestone towards this goal was achieved in December 2019 when the company replaced plastic packaging material, such as bubble wraps and air pillows, with ‘paper cushion’ in its packaging. The company then introduced 100% plastic-free and biodegradable paper tape earlier this year, which is used to seal and secure customer shipments. Additionally, the company has replaced thin cling films for customer deliveries among other material with packaging options that are not single-use plastic in nature. All other plastic packaging material originating from the Amazon Fulfilment Centers is 100% recyclable through available collection, segregation and recycling channels. Amazon India continues to educate sellers, who directly fulfil customer orders, to join in this directional change in packaging.

Amazon India has carried out several pilots while developing innovative single-use plastic-free solutions, to gauge the in-transit strength of its packaging. The company has also collaborated with manufacturers to design sustainable packaging innovations to minimize waste in packaging. The pilots have enabled the company to make significant steps towards it sustainability goals without impacting the customer experience or product safety.

Prakash Kumar Dutta, Director,Customer Fulfilment & Supply Chain, Amazon India said, “The elimination of single use plastic in our packaging across our fulfilment centers marks an important milestone in our relentless journey towards building a sustainable supply chain. Our aim is to minimize environmental impact while elevating customer experience. While navigating through unprecedented challenges with the lockdown and pandemic in the last few months, we have continued to take progressive steps towards ensuring that we meet our commitment. We strongly believe that moving towards sustainable practices is good for the planet, the customers and the business, and we will continue to invest and innovate on this front.”

Earlier this month, the company announced that it has expanded its India-first initiative, Packaging-Free Shipping (PFS) to over 100 cities, and now more than 40% of Amazon customer orders shipped from Amazon India’s Fulfilment centers are now either packaging-free or have significantly reduced packaging. The company has also been collecting and recycling plastic waste equivalent to its usage at a national level from September 2019, and has identified collection agencies to help collect equivalent 100% plastic waste generated from usage across Amazon fulfilment network.

Amazon Flex provides part-time and flexible earning opportunities to individuals

Bangalore, 18 June 2020: Amazon India today announced the expansion of the Amazon Flex delivery program to more than 35 cities in the country. The global delivery program, launched in June 2019 in India aims at creating part time work opportunities where individuals can be their own boss, create their own schedule and earn INR 120 to 140 per hour by delivering packages to Amazon customers. The expansion of the program from 3 cities in June 2019 to 35 cities in June 2020 has created tens of thousands of part-time opportunities for individuals in metros and non-metro cities such as Raipur, Hubli, Gwalior and Nashik among others.

The expansion of the program will help scale Amazon India’s delivery capability at a time when customers across the country continue to depend on Amazon India’s services to have their products delivered safely at their doorstep.

“Over the last one year we have received an overwhelming response for the Amazon Flex program from thousands of individuals who have benefited by delivering to Amazon customers. Amazon Flex partners enjoy the part time opportunity to earn more, especially at this time when the country is economically recovering from the impact of the nationwide lockdown. Their safety remains our top priority, and we are taking the right precautions, and have implemented a series of preventative health measures. As we continue to scale and further grow the program to more than 35 cities across the country, Amazon Flex will add tremendous value in serving our customers so they can stay home and practice social distancing.” said Prakash Rochlani, Director, Last Mile Transportation, Amazon India.

Since its launch in June 2019, the program has created opportunities for students, homemakers and individuals who are looking to supplement their income by delivering Amazon packages during their spare time. Interested delivery partners can sign up, choose their own schedule, and deliver packages – all using the Amazon Flex app. Interested individuals can visit https://flex.amazon.in for more details.

Amazon is committed to the health and safety of its associates, partners, employees, and customers and has implemented several preventive measures close to 100 significant process changes in their fulfilment network for the safety of its people during this pandemic. These include mandatory face covering, increased frequency and intensity of cleaning at all sites including regular sanitization of frequently touched areas, thermal screening of every Flex partner, and awareness-building among associates including Amazon Flex partners on safety requirements around hand-washing and hand sanitization. In the last three months, the company has leveraged technology to completely shift the on boarding process to a virtual experience, has introduced digitized training for Flex partners and has implemented no touch check-in for delivery associates in the buildings.
