Walkathon creates awareness on foot health care

Kargil War Hero Capt. Naveen Nagappa Shared Inspiring Battle and Recovery Story

Intl seminar on role of biomechanics in diabetic foot treatment

BENGALURU: FootSecure, a phygital podiatry platform, conducted a 3K diabetic foot awareness walkathon on May 26 in Bengaluru.

Foot Secure, along with the Indian Institute of Science, had organized a walkathon from Foot Secure Malleswaram to JN Tata Auditorium, IISc, to raise awareness about the significance of timely podiatric intervention in diabetic foot management.

The organizing committee also held a two day Podocon—Biomechanics of Diabetic Foot Conference at JN Tata Auditorium. Dr Shalini Rajneesh, Addnl. Chief Secretary, was the chief guest during the inaugural session. Capt. Naveen Nagappa, an ex-serviceman of the Indian Army and a Kargil war hero, was the guest of honurour on 25th . Capt. Naveen Nagappa shared his experiences of the war, and how he sustained multiple surgeries on his legs, and his resilience.

This is the 6th edition of PODOCON. About 300 delegates from India and neighbouring countries, encompassing a diverse group of professionals such as diabetic foot surgeons, orthopaedic surgeons, plastic surgeons, diabetologists, endocrinologists, podiatrists, physicians, entrepreneurs, key opinion leaders, researchers, innovators, and decision-makers, are attended the conference.

The conference also highlighted significant advancements in wound care dressings and regenerative medicine and discussed the management of Charcot Foot. A scientific assembly featuring the panels and symposia were showcased pioneering research from around the world.

“We can prevent 80 per cent of these amputations if we intervene at the right time, and biomechanics play an important role in it,” pointed out Dr Sanjay Sharma, a renowned podiatric surgeon and founder of Foot Secure, which is working towards applying biomechanics principles in diabetic foot management. “There is a strong need to provide clinicians with the required knowledge and insights so that diabetic patients receive the right intervention and amputations are prevented,” he added

“The Sanskrit word for footwear is paadaraksha—those that protect our feet. We need that more than ever now, with the impending threat of diabetic foot ulcers. We have undertaken three efforts, one to provide all-mechanical dynamic self-offloading footwear that can be customized with precision for an individual; a digital podiatry clinic to monitor the feet of people at scale; and to develop a foot digital twin with minimally invasive data acquisition. We are hoping that these efforts will protect the feet that help us stand and walk,” said Dr. Anant Suresh, Dean, IISc.

Podiatry is a branch of medicine that exclusively studies, diagnoses, and provides medical and surgical treatment for disorders of the foot and ankle. Unfortunately, biomechanics and podiatry have not received due attention in India, in the treatment of Diabetic Foot Conditions. According to estimates, 140,000 major lower limb amputations are being carried out among diabetic patients in India annually. If minor amputations, such as toes and other parts of the limb, are taken into consideration, then the number of cases crosses 1.4 million per year.

“Yamaraja and Modern Chitragupta Campaign Goes Viral with Helmet Safety Message from Signals to Mobile Screens “

India, May 2, 2024 – Yamaraja and Modern Chitragupta portrayed by renowned RJ Amith and theater artist Viveka Rao respectively, joined forces in a groundbreaking campaign aimed at raising awareness about the importance of full helmets for road safety. Despite January being dubbed “road safety month,” the month witnessed a concerning surge in road accidents, with a significant portion attributed to injuries sustained due to half helmets.
In collaboration with the Bengaluru Traffic Police, the campaign strategically targeted some of the city’s busiest signals, including Silk Board and Hebbal signal, to engage with riders. Employing a humorous approach, RJ Amith and Viveka Rao initiated conversations with riders wearing half helmets, educating them on the critical significance of full helmets in ensuring safety on the roads.
Reflecting on the success of the initiative, RJ Amith shared, “We wanted to approach this serious issue in a light-hearted manner to effectively communicate the importance of full helmets. We spoke to a boy and girl where the boy was wearing the full helmet and the girl wasn’t wearing one. We asked the girl if the relationship is even worth it if the boy doesn’t care about her safety and wellbeing. Initially the boy was miffed and eventually understood what we were trying to say” Similarly an elderly man got down from his bike and bowed down to Yamaraj and said he won’t repeat his mistake of wearing a half helmet.”

Echoing similar sentiments, Viveka Rao added, “As artists, we believe in using every available platform for social good. It was heartening to see the impact our interactions had on riders and pedestrians alike. We hope to continue spreading awareness on crucial issues through such initiatives.”
The campaign received unwavering support from the Bengaluru Traffic Police, with Joint Commissioner Traffic MN Anucheth emphasizing, “Road safety is a collective responsibility, and initiatives like Yamaraja and Modern Chitragupta play a vital role in fostering a culture of safety awareness among citizens. We commend RJ Amith, Viveka Rao, and the entire team for their efforts in making Bengaluru’s roads safer.”
Adding to the commendation, Pushpendra Singh, Business Director for Karnataka, expressed, “We are committed to promoting initiatives that prioritize public safety. The overwhelming response to the Yamaraja and Modern Chitragupta campaign underscores the power of collaborative efforts in driving meaningful change.”
The campaign, documented and shared across various social media platforms over a span of two months, amassed over 6 million views collectively on platforms including Mirchi Kannada, RJ Amith’s Instagram page and Bengaluru City Police and Traffic Police Instagram pages. The widespread engagement further underscores the resonance of the message within the community.
As conversations about the campaign continue to reverberate across Bengaluru, it stands as a testament to the collective efforts of stakeholders in fostering a safer road environment for all.

Celebrate Holi Safely: Protect Your Eyes from Chemical Colors, Advises Dr. Agarwals Eye Hospital

Bengaluru, March 22, 2024 : Holi, the vibrant festival of colors, marks the celebration of spring’s arrival, uniting friends and family in a spectacle of joy and color. However, amidst the laughter and festivity, there lurks a hidden danger to your eyes, warn experts from Dr. Agarwals Eye Hospital. The enthusiastic participation in Holi’s traditional activities, involving synthetic colors and water balloons, can inadvertently lead to eye injuries and damage.

Dr Devaraj M, Head of Clinical Services at Dr. Agarwals Eye Hospital in Bangalore, Karnataka, highlights the risks posed by the chemical-laden colors used during the festival. These colors often contain harmful substances, including heavy metals and toxic dyes, capable of causing irritation, redness, and, in severe cases, blindness. Similarly, the water used can be mixed with dangerous chemicals such as lead and mercury, posing significant health threats.

The eye hospital’s expert stresses the importance of understanding how these Holi colors can harm your eyes. Contact with these substances can lead to a range of adverse reactions, from a mild burning sensation to severe allergic reactions and infections, potentially jeopardizing long-term vision.

To ensure a joyous yet safe Holi celebration, xxxx offers valuable advice:

Opt for Natural Colors: Embrace colors derived from flowers, vegetables, and other natural sources. These are not only safer for the eyes and skin but also eco-friendly.

Wear Eye Protection: Don goggles or sunglasses to shield your eyes from harmful colors and UV rays.

Close Your Eyes: Keep your eyes shut if you anticipate being doused in color.

Immediate Eye Rinse: Should colors enter your eyes, promptly rinse them with clean water to prevent damage.

Say No to Water Balloons: Although entertaining, water balloons pose a risk of causing eye injuries and are best avoided.

Pre-Application of Oils: Applying coconut or mustard oil on your hair and skin forms a protective layer, aiding in the easy removal of colors.

Hydration is Key: Drinking ample water helps in detoxifying any chemicals that might penetrate your skin or eyes.

Emergency Preparedness: Keep a first-aid kit accessible for immediate treatment of any eye irritation or injuries.

Awareness of the hazards associated with chemical colors in Holi is crucial. Should you experience symptoms like redness, swelling, or itching, seeking immediate medical attention is imperative to avoid serious complications.

In essence, while Holi is a festival that epitomizes fun and unity, safeguarding one’s health, particularly eye health, is paramount. Adhering to these protective measures can help ensure a safe, enjoyable Holi experience for everyone involved. Let’s celebrate responsibly, prioritizing the well-being of our eyes while soaking in the festivities.
