Three-pronged sustainable solution for Bengaluru Water crisis

Three-pronged sustainable solution for Bengaluru Water crisis

AquaKraft Group Ventures, (www.aquakraft.net) a water sustainability and Impact group, focused on providing actionable solutions on ground in the area of drinking water and sanitation is offering a comprehensive three-pronged solution to address Bengaluru’s water crisis. Since Bangalore has been a recipient of good rain showers for years, the key lies in effective utilization of the waters received.

The first prong constitutes a real-time IOT based system for monitoring the rain water harvesting structures to understand their efficiency, capture and recharge readings.

The second prong envelopes the treatment of sewage and effluents by employing Aquakraft’s nature based, time tested, green & sustainable sewage treatment plants that consume no power, use a bio process with no usage of any chemicals, no odour, recovering over 95 percent of the water that is fit for recharging the underground aquifers.

The third prong stems from an understanding of the capital intensive nature of the STPs. To this effect AquaKraft has structured a sustainable financing model to fund sewage treatment and water recycling wherein the stakeholders enter a water purchase agreement akin to power purchase agreement, address their captive needs and offer the excess water for groundwater recharge or other consumption.

All initiators of rain water harvesting, STPs and groundwater recharge will be monitored using real-time IOTS and the data will be used for integrated water risk management and policy making. This good behaviour in water will be incentivised by issuing Aquakredits – Water Credits after monitoring water use and efficiency on AquaKraft’s digital innovation, AqVerium World’s 1st Digital Water Bank.”

With about a staggering 86 percent of the water needs of the urban areas being met by extracting groundwater, the centrality of groundwater to the existing crisis cannot be denied. With an estimated 1000 million litres of sewage being discharged into the city’s lakes and reservoirs that once functioned efficiently as sites for rainwater capture and groundwater recharge, it has also become clear that sewage treatment and water recycling form a complementary piece of the puzzle that is the Bangalore water crisis.

The Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board in the past had taken proactive measures to pass a regulation making rainwater harvesting compulsory for houses having an area of 1200 square feet or more to reduce the stress on groundwater. However, the implementation of this resolution has not yielded the desired results. Additionally, there is no central or local system to keep a track of the harvesting structures, their capture measurements, efficiency readings, recharge rates etc. The same also applies to the rules regarding the mandatory installation of sewage-treatment plants (STPs) in residential, commercial and educational institutions that has been revised a few days back owing to the economic infeasibility for smaller sized stakeholders.

Speaking on the occasion, C Sridhar – Governor, Aquakraft group Ventures said, “One of the most important strategies to mitigate the crisis is roof top harvesting. We have been able to make water bereft villages depending on tanker water, tanker free with simple roof top harvesting. Though rainwater harvesting has been made mandatory, its implementation has been poor. Aquakraft will embark on “Jal Pe Charcha” an extensive advocacy programme engaging all stakeholders to catch the rain and recharge the ground water table.”

Carrying an experience of over a decade and a half in evaluating, monitoring and mitigating crises by Implementing green & sustainable solutions surrounding the resource that is highly undervalued despite being the planet’s lifeline water, Aquakraft Group Ventures has taken a focussed initiative as one of the first responders to help resolve the labyrinth of crisis facing the city of Bengaluru.

“Monsoon is seasonal, sewage is perpetual. Our vision is to leverage the sewage generated daily in Bengaluru City and use the excess treated sewage to recharge the dry borewells and augment the ground water table Irrespective of rain. Added to that, incentives for rain water harvesting will complement this efforts leading Bengaluru to water positivity. A multifaceted problem requires a multifaceted solution through multi stakeholder initiatives. We take this opportunity to invite all stakeholders including citizens, corporates, CSR and administrative bodies to come together and make the city of Bangalore ‘Water Positive’ through collective efforts.” Said Dr. Subramanya Kusnur, Founder Chairman & CEO, AquaKraft Group Ventures and New Water Man of India.

The use of tobacco products, especially cigarettes, has increased among educated people.

The use of tobacco including cigarettes has increased among educated people.  Therefore, along with awareness, sales control measures for tobacco products should be strictly followed.  We have laws relating to the control of tobacco products, which are not being adequately enforced.  Even now smoking continues in some public places.  Direct and indirect advertising.  For example, in movies, the hero of the film smokes a cigarette.  It encourages people to smoke.  Care should be taken not to sell tobacco products to children through shops.

Although tobacco is known to be harmful to health, people continue to use it.  Just as the government has taken measures to ban hookah, many cancer cases can be prevented if the ban on tobacco products is strictly enforced said Dr. Mahantesh Cancer Specialist, Kidwai Memorial Gland Institute.

Are you drinking plastic or water? Here are 5 ways to ensure you drink healthy water

Author: Vijender Reddy Muthyala
Co-founder & CEO, DrinkPrime

Plastic is everywhere! It has seamlessly integrated into every aspect of our lives, from bottled water to pre-cut veggies, infiltrating our on-the-go snacks and convenient hydration solutions.

And in our busy lifestyle, who doesn’t appreciate a quick fix? Whether it’s a protein bar for breakfast, or reaching for that bottled water when we forget our own bottle, convenience often comes first. The problem is these seemingly convenient choices all come wrapped in plastic packaging containing microscopic plastic particles.

A recent study published in the journal – Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences – uncovered a shocking fact: a single plastic bottle, holding just 1 litre of water can contain a staggering 2,40,000 nanoplastic fragments. These nearly invisible particles, smaller than microplastics, raise concerns about their potential health impacts, as they can bypass our digestive system and enter the bloodstream easily.

Even past studies found microplastics in 93% of bottled water brands, with the average bottle containing 60 times more microplastics than tap water. The health implications of ingesting such significant quantities of microplastics and nanoplastics are still being researched, but existing research links them to inflammation, cell damage, hormonal disruption, digestive issues, and reproductive problems.

In the face of these alarming findings, what can one do? The solution is both simple and impactful: try to reduce the use of plastic bottles as much as possible. Here are some practical steps to break free from the reliance on plastic water bottles:

Invest in a reusable bottle: Consider buying a durable, reusable water bottle made from materials such as stainless steel or glass. Stainless steel and glass are not only recyclable, but also have a longer lifespan compared to plastic. This choice also helps in reducing the environmental impact associated with manufacturing and disposing of single-use plastics.

Hydrate responsibly: Fill your water bottle at home with water from your water purifier to avoid plastic contamination on the go.

Carry a bottle everywhere: Make it a habit of bringing your reusable bottle wherever you go. Keep it in your car, at your workplace or in your bag. Having it readily available reduces the temptation to buy single-use plastic bottles when you’re on the move.

Reduce single-use plastics: Actively decline single-use plastic bottles whenever possible. By consciously refusing them, you not only reduce your personal plastic consumption, but also send a message about the importance of sustainable choices. Encourage friends, family and colleagues to join in the effort to minimise single-use plastics.

Support sustainable brands:  Seek out businesses that are all about sustainability. Many brands now offer alternative solutions to single-use plastic bottles. By supporting these initiatives, you contribute to the demand for more sustainable practices, encouraging others to follow suit.

If you follow at least some of these steps, it will be easier to break the habit of relying on plastic water bottles. Always remember that the choice is not just about the quantity of water, but also the quality – for both you and the planet.
