World Sparrow Day: A Call to Protect Our Vanishing Feathered Friends

World Sparrow Day: A Call to Protect Our Vanishing Feathered Friends

By G.S. Gopal Raaj, Editor – City Today News

Bengaluru, March 20, 2025 – Once a common sight in our homes, gardens, and marketplaces, the humble house sparrow is now disappearing at an alarming rate. On this World Sparrow Day, observed annually on March 20, environmentalists are urging citizens to take action to protect these birds from extinction.

The theme for this year, “Protect Sparrows, Preserve Nature,” highlights the critical role that sparrows play in maintaining ecological balance. Experts cite rapid urbanization, loss of green spaces, radiation from mobile towers, and excessive pesticide use as major reasons for their decline.

“These birds are an indicator of environmental health. If sparrows are vanishing, it’s a sign that our environment is under stress,” says a leading ornithologist. Conservationists suggest simple yet effective steps like setting up bird feeders, providing water sources, planting native trees, and reducing pesticide use to help revive their dwindling population.

Various schools, NGOs, and birdwatching groups across Karnataka are organizing awareness campaigns, tree-planting drives, and sparrow conservation initiatives. The government and urban planners must also step up efforts to integrate biodiversity protection into city planning.

As we mark World Sparrow Day, let us pledge to make our cities and homes sparrow-friendly, ensuring that future generations wake up to their cheerful chirping once again.

BBMP’s Poor Garbage Management Poses Serious Health Risks; Officials Ignore Crisis, Says GS Gopal Raaj

Bengaluru: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is once again under fire for its failure to manage the city’s waste disposal system effectively. The poor condition of garbage collection vehicles has become a major concern, with residents complaining about leaking waste, unbearable stench, and unhygienic conditions leading to the spread of diseases. Despite repeated appeals from the public, BBMP officials have allegedly turned a blind eye to the deteriorating situation.

Raising serious concerns over BBMP’s mismanagement, GS Gopal Raaj, Editor of City Today News, slammed the civic body for its inaction. He stated,

“The garbage collection vehicles in Bengaluru are in an extremely pathetic condition, spreading all kinds of diseases. The BBMP officials have shown complete negligence toward this issue. Instead of fixing the existing system, they are now planning to impose a garbage tax on residents. This is completely unacceptable. Before imposing any financial burden on citizens, BBMP must first ensure proper doorstep garbage collection and maintain hygiene standards. This is the worst system, and people must strongly oppose it.”

Public Health at Risk Due to Poor Waste Management

Several health experts and activists have warned that the unhygienic condition of garbage trucks and the inefficient waste collection process could trigger major health hazards in the city. Uncollected waste, coupled with improper disposal methods, has led to the increase of mosquito breeding sites, worsening the spread of vector-borne diseases like dengue, malaria, and chikungunya.

“Poor waste management does not just make the city look dirty; it directly affects public health. The absence of a proper waste disposal system leads to bacterial and viral infections, respiratory illnesses, and increased pollution levels,” said a senior health expert.

Many residents have expressed their anger over the issue, alleging that BBMP’s garbage trucks are outdated, unclean, and often left unattended, allowing waste to rot in residential areas and commercial hubs.

Public Outrage Over BBMP’s Garbage Tax Proposal

What has further angered residents is BBMP’s recent proposal to introduce a garbage tax, which they argue is unjustified given the poor service provided by the civic body. Citizens demand that before imposing any tax, BBMP should first prove that it can handle waste management efficiently.

A resident from Jayanagar stated, “We are already paying property tax, which includes waste management charges. Why should we pay an additional garbage tax when the BBMP is failing to even collect waste properly? They should focus on improving the system rather than imposing more financial burdens on the public.”

Public Demands and Call for Action

As frustration mounts, many citizens and activists are now demanding strict action from BBMP, including:

* Regular doorstep garbage collection to ensure waste does not accumulate on streets.
* Replacement and maintenance of garbage collection vehicles to prevent leakage and pollution.
* Strict monitoring of BBMP officials responsible for waste management.
* Complete transparency on how waste management funds are utilized.

With growing public outrage, it remains to be seen whether BBMP will take urgent corrective measures or continue ignoring the city’s sanitation crisis. If immediate improvements are not made, citizens may be forced to escalate protests and take legal action against the civic body for failing to provide basic sanitation services.

SPARSH Hospital Marks World Kidney Day by Raising Awareness about the Disease, Organ Donation, and Transplants

• Experts Emphasize on Early Diagnosis and Advanced Treatment
• Organ recipients share life-saving experiences to highlight the importance of organ donation

Bengaluru, March 13, 2025: Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is emerging as a major health concern in India, with a rising number of cases linked to diabetes, hypertension, and lifestyle factors. To address this growing issue, SS SPARSH Hospital, RR Nagar (Mysore Road), observed World Kidney Day 2025 by hosting an awareness event with organ receivers. The event focused on prevention, early diagnosis, honouring donors, experience sharing by organ receivers, and the role of kidney transplants in saving lives.

Speaking on the occasion as Chief Guest, former Supreme Court Judge, Justice Shri Shivaraj V Patil said, “Organ donation is one of the greatest acts of humanity, and we must all come together to support this noble cause.” He appreciated the role of SOTTO Karnataka, doctors, donors, and medical experts in facilitating life-saving transplants and raising awareness about kidney disease, organ donation, and world class transplant facilities.”

So far, between January 2024 and February 2025, a total number of 36 kidney transplants have been successfully performed at the hospital, including six cadaver donations. Nearly 29 transplant recipients attended the event, sharing their emotional experiences of battling kidney disease and how the procedure has helped them to get a new life.

Emphasising the importance of kidney health, Dr. Sharan Shivaraj Patil, Chairman and Chief Orthopaedic Surgeon, SPARSH Group of Hospitals, said, “Kidney disease extends beyond a medical concern—it impacts the families, causing significant financial and emotional strain. Prioritising early screening, adopting healthier lifestyles, and managing conditions like diabetes can significantly lower the risk of chronic kidney disease. With advanced expertise and state-of-the-art facilities, our teams are equipped to perform life-saving organ transplants, offering renewed hope to patients in need.”

“Many kidney diseases progress silently until they reach an advanced stage. Regular screening for individuals at risk, including those with diabetes and hypertension, can enable timely intervention and prevent complications. Early detection and advanced treatment options ensure better outcomes for patients,” added Dr. Harsha Kumar H N, Senior Consultant – Nephrology & Transplant Physician, SS SPARSH Hospital, RR Nagar.

The event reinforced SPARSH Hospital’s commitment to advancing kidney care and organ transplantation while highlighting the importance of preventive healthcare measures including early diagnosis to combat the rising burden of CKD.

“Successful kidney transplants not only improve the quality of life but also significantly extend life expectancy for patients with end-stage kidney disease. The selfless act of organ donation can save multiple lives, and greater awareness is needed to encourage more people to pledge their organs,” emphasized Dr. Sunil R, Senior Consultant – Nephrology & Transplant Physician, SS SPARSH Hospital, RR Nagar.
