4-5% of healthy people found with lung anomalies that may develop into cancer: NURA doctors

BENGALURU / July 30, 2022: Out of 3,500 healthy people who underwent preventive health screening in the last 12 months at NURA, a collaboration between Fujifilm Healthcare and Dr Kutty’s Healthcare offering AI-enabled imaging at Bengaluru, about 4-5% were found with suspicious anomalies in the lungs that should be investigated by a pulmonologist to rule out lung cancer.

Said Dr. Tausif Ahmed Thangalvadi, Medical Director, NURA, Bengaluru: “In many cases, these anomalies, though small, can grow into cancer in a few years. Lung cancer is the most fatal cancer in the world, causing much higher number of deaths than any other cancer. Detection in early stages can enormously increase survival chances of patients. In Japan, where health screening begins at an early age, lung cancer survival rate is 33%, compared to only 4% in India, as per data from OECD.”

About 18 lakh people die of lung cancer every year worldwide, even as 22 lakh new cases are detected. In India, lung cancer constitutes 6.9% of all new cancer cases and 9.3% of all cancer-related deaths in both sexes. The incidence is highest between the ages of 55-70 years, with incidence in males 4.5 times higher than in females.

Said Dr. Tausif Ahmed Thangalvadi: “Smoking is number one cause linked to lung cancer. Tobacco contains at least 69 cancer-causing agents. Other factors include occupational exposure to cancer-causing chemicals like asbestos and radon, indoor burning of coal, lung infections and a family history of lung cancer. Also, cancer in any other part of the body can quickly spread to the lungs.”

Saving lives from lung cancer depends on early detection, according to Dr. Tausif Ahmed Thangalvadi: He said: “Screening is the best preventive measure for lung cancer, which is a silent disease. It starts vey small when it is easy to treat. However, by the time symptoms appear such as coughing and breathlessness, the cancer is already big and tough to treat. In advanced stages, lung cancer tends to spread to various other organs, drastically reducing chances of the patient surviving.”

Detection rate of lung cancer is poor in India, with 7 out of every 10 patients succumbing to the disease. Said Dr. Tausif Ahmed Thangalvadi: “Various reasons can be attributed for low detection rates. Symptoms do not appear in early stages of lung cancer. It is difficult for primary healthcare personnel to detect the disease. There is no culture of regular health screening. Even if people get themselves screened, regular X-ray is not sufficient for detection at early stages. A CT scan is required, which is much better at finding small abnormalities in the lungs.”

The global trend, such as in US and France, is to use ultra-low-dose (ULD) CT scan to reduce exposure to radiation. ULD CT uses up to 97% lower dose of radiation than a normal chest CT scan, which is almost equivalent to a routine X-ray. Said Dr. Tausif Ahmed Thangalvadi: “A plain CT scan uses 10-15 mSv of radiation. What is now advised is a low-dose CT scan that emits only 2.5 mSv of radiation. We at NURA use ULD CT scan that uses only 0.2 mSv radiation for lung screening and 0.8 mSv to check for any pre-existing lung damage, as that is a risk factor for lung cancer. This is much less that what is even recommended internationally. With the help of our artificial intelligence technology, we achieve this dose reduction along with enhanced results in terms of accuracy.”

He added: “Though international recommendation is for anyone above 50 years of age to get routinely screened for lung cancer, we are seeing cases in even younger patients. It therefore makes sense to get yourself screened sooner than later, starting at the age of 35-40. It is better to be safe than sorry.”

Apollo Cancer Centres celebrates Life After Cancer with Peak – to – Peak Initiative

Bengaluru , 19 July 2022 : With the mission to spread awareness about positive living after cancer treatment , Apollo Cancer Centres ( ACC ) , ranked as the best private cancer hospitals in India and one of the best in the world , celebrates ‘ Life after Cancer ‘ with its recent initiative ‘ Peak to Peak – Winning over Cancer ‘ a 5 – day trek with cancer survivors and caregivers . The initiative , which was flagged off from Dehradun in June 2022 , was centralized around to address negative associations attached to any patient who undergoes cancer therapy . Eight cancer survivors from different parts of the country embarked on a memorable journey from Dehradun to Dayara Bugyal in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand , traversing along the luscious green meadows and rich landscape to scale the height of 11,830 ft . Dr Rani Akhil Bhat , Lead Surgeon Consultant – Gynec Oncology , Apollo Cancer Centres and Archana Hosangadi ( 50 – year – old ) , one of the cancer survivors from Bengaluru who scaled a height of 11,830 ft . in Uttarakhand , were a part of the initiative . ” We , at the Apollo Cancer Centers , believe treating cancer is only a part of the journey ; we want to address the overlooked needs of our survivors . We wanted our cancer survivors to realize that they can still lead a normal life after cancer treatment , thus ‘ Peak to Peak ‘ was born . We had eight cancer survivors who trekked to Dayara Bugyal which is situated at 11,840 ft in Uttarakhand and successfully completed it . The event was a symbol of CELEBRATION for those who have survived , an INSPIRATION for those recently diagnosed , a gathering of SUPPORT for families , and an OUTREACH to the community , ” said Dr. Bhat . Dr. Jayanti Thumsi , Lead Surgeon – Breast Oncology , Apollo Cancer Centres , who treated Archana , pointed out that there has been an immense advancement in the treatment of Breast Cancer . She said , ” Not only is the treatment planning important but also the quality of life after cancer treatment . She ( Archana ) had a disease that was restricted only to her breast and , considering various other factors , we planned a Breast Conservation Surgery with Sentinel Node Biopsy and Local Oncoplastic Surgery . She recovered well from the surgery and her final Histopathology report suggested it to be a Stage 2 , Triple Negative Breast Cancer ( TNBC ) . ” TNBC tends to be an aggressive type , hence , the medical team planned to give her eight cycles of chemotherapy at three weekly intervals . This was followed by 25 sittings of radiation therapy . Commenting on the initiative , Dr Manish Mattoo , Chief Executive Officer , Karnataka Region , said , ” In this age of technical advancement , cancer can be treated with the right knowledge of experts if the condition is diagnosed at the right time .

It is imperative that we educate our patients and their families to help them understand the issue and solution better . ” Sharing her journey , Archana Hosangadi , said , ” I was diagnosed with Triple – negative breast cancer , 2nd stage in May 2019. Thereafter , I went through surgery , very intense chemotherapy of eight

Ovet cycles and 25 radiations , which although helped me to heal from illness , left me weak and drained all my confidence . I did get back to the gym shortly after my treatment but always felt the confidence lacking . According to her , it was fulfilling to see and experience that all the eight survivors could make it to the top . ” The initiative was aptly called ” Peak to peak ” , considering the conquest of our illness to the conquest of the mountain . I was overwhelmed when I reached the summit and felt triumphant that I had conquered my fear , my confidence is now back and I plan to continue trekking on a regular basis , ” she added . In line with the motto – Winning over Cancer ‘ , ACC aims to bust the myth around cancer and spread positivity by sharing the story of cancer survivors . The core thought is in the belief of winning is not only conquering cancer physically but also mentally .

“In Search of a Savior” Thousands of Blood Cancer patients are in dire need of Matching blood stem cell Donors

*Blood stem cell transplant is often the only life – saving treatment option for blood cancer patients

*Only 30 % patient in need of a stem cell transplant find a match in their family ; the rest 70 % have to find an unrelated matching donor

* Only five lakh Indians are registered as potential blood stem cell donors , which is abysmal compared to Western countries

Bengaluru , 26th May 2022 : Blood stem cell transplant is often the only lifesaving treatment option for patients with blood cancer . Around one – year post transplant , most patients go on to lead near normal lives . However , lack of awareness about the treatment is a big challenge in India , due to which it is a race against time for patients waiting to find a matching donor . This was stated by medical experts in Bengaluru while marking the World Blood Cancer day , in an event organized by DKMS BMST Foundation India , a non – profit organization dedicated to the fight against world blood cancer .

Dr. Sunil Bhat , Director & Clinical Lead , Pediatric Hematology , Oncology and Blood & Marrow Transplantation , Narayana Health , Bengaluru : ” If a genetically well – matched , young and healthy donor is available , the outcome of blood stem cell transplant is very good . The success rate differs with variations in patient and disease characteristics but , if done at the right time , 60 70 % patients can be completely cured . In fact , the success rate has increased up to 80 % with advancement in the conditioning regimen . Studies suggest that more than 70 % of patients report good to excellent quality of life in 1-4 years after the transplant . ”

Over the last two decades , better diagnosis and disease awareness has led to a definite increase in incidence of blood cancer in India , especially in patients belonging to lower socio – economic strata . These patients are being diagnosed at advanced stage of the disease , leading to higher morbidity and mortality . A large number of patients from underprivileged sections and remote locations go undiagnosed and the incidences are not reported .

Unavailability of matching blood stem cell donors is the main challenge faced by Indian patients in need of a transplant . Said Patrick Paul , CEO , DKMS BMST Foundation India , only about 30 % of the patients can find a sibling match and the rest 70 % depend on finding a matching unrelated donor . As per the World Marrow Donor sociation , there are over 39 million donors registered across the globe . Only 0.5 million of these are from India . When someone needs a blood stem cell transplant , their odds of finding a match is much higher from among people of the same ethnicity . Hence it is very important for more Indians to step forward to register as donors so that more patients can be saved . ”

Every year , over 70,000 people die due to blood cancer in India , even as over 1 lakh new patients get diagnosed . Said Dr. Sunil Bhat : ” Both malignant and non – malignant conditions can be treated with a blood stem cell transplant , including Lymphoma , Leukemia , Myeloma and Hodgkin’s diseases . Knowing the type and subtype of leukemia is important in estimating life expectancy . The 5 – year survival rate for children with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia ( ALL ) has greatly increased over time and is now about 90 % overall . The 5 – year survival rate of Acute Myelogenous Leukemia ( AML ) has also increased over time and is now in the range of 65-70 % . Early detection and initiation of treatment along with proper compliance from patient side will reduce both mortality and morbidity . ”

Maheer found his lifesaver from Germany

Maheer , hailing from Ahmedabad , was just 6 years old when he was diagnosed with acute leukemia . He got a second chance at life when he found a matching donor registered with DKMS , Dr Sita Arjune , a medical doctor from Cologne , Germany .

It has been nine years since Maheer received the transplant . ” At that time , I was very young , so I did not know what was happening , or why . There was so much anxiety , and my parents were so worried . My father told me there was an issue with my blood but that it would all be sorted . After the transplant , everyone felt much happier , ” said Maheer .

Dr Sita , who was elated to have helped a patient in need , said , ” As soon as I found out about the plight of Maheer , I knew I had to help . Suddenly , there was someone I could give hope to through my donation . Hope is something we all deserve . ” Maheer is now 14 years old . He has managed to beat leukemia and now has the gift of a bright future to look forward to . He loves to listen to music , play with friends , travel and do research , especially in the field of medicine .

He has a very important message for people : ” The only reason I am here breathing , living , speaking , is my transplant . This donation gave me my life back . What could be more beautiful than that ? By donating stem cells , you could give someone a new life . So , please sign up as a potential lifesaver !

Registration takes only 5 minutes of your time . If you’re between 18 and 50 years and in general good health , take the first step to register as a blood stem cell donor by ordering your home swab kit at http://www.dkms-bmst.org/register .

CANCER: What are the common cancers and how to spot them?

What are the common cancers and how to spot them?
Cancer occurs due to abnormal proliferation of cells in the body. The primary factor driving the formation of cancer cells is the mutation or alteration of the cell’s genetic material. Although cancer can occur in anyone, there are certain differences in the incidence of types of cancer between men and women.

Common cancers among women include:
Breast cancer: Screening in the form of mammogram is recommended to all women, to pick up the disease in nascent stages when the person is asymptomatic. The disease manifests as painless lump in the breast, skin changes, nipple discharge, and lump in the axilla. Diagnosis is made by imaging (diagnostic mammogram) and confirmed by a biopsy.
Cervical cancer: Screening in the form of PAP smear is recommended to diagnose the condition in early stages. The disease manifests as irregular menses, intermenstrual bleeding (i.e., bleeding in between the menses cycle), bleeding after sexual intercourse, foul smelling vaginal discharge. The disease is initially identified by a PAP smear. Positive results are followed with colposcopy and biopsy.

Commonly occurring cancers irrespective of sex include:
Oropharyngeal cancer: Common among tobacco chewers. There’s no specific screening test. Disease is usually picked up by a routine dental and oral cavity exam. If symptoms arise, there could be painless ulcer, soreness of mouth, lump in the neck, difficulty swallowing. Diagnosis is confirmed by biopsy of the lesion.
Lung cancer: Usually arises in long term smokers. Symptoms include long standing cough, coughing up blood, weight loss and fatigue, chest pain, recurrent chest infections. Diagnosis is done by imaging of the chest and confirmed by a biopsy.
Prostate cancer: Usually asymptomatic in initial stages. Symptoms, if present include urinary urgency, urinary frequency, and pain during urination, passing blood in urine. Sometimes disease is diagnosed in advanced stage by which time, metastases would have occurred. The symptoms of metastases (distant spread) include bone pain (especially the back), swelling of legs, weight loss. If the disease is suspected, the doctor will suggest DRE (Digital Rectal Exam) to assess prostate, PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) test, imaging in the form of MRI, and biopsy of the prostate.
Stomach cancer: Usually asymptomatic in initial stages. Symptoms start when the disease has already progressed. Symptoms include vomiting, abdominal pain, indigestion, loss of appetite and weight, passing black coloured stools. Diagnosis is picked up by the endoscopy and is confirmed by biopsy. The patient may be subjected to imaging to stage the disease, so that management is planned accordingly.
Blood cancer: Common in men than in women. There are various types of blood cancers of which lymphoma is common. Symptoms include swelling of the lymph nodes, long standing fever, night sweats, bleeding from gums and weight loss. Diagnostic tests include blood film and visualization under microscope, blood counts and imaging studies. This is followed by procedures like biopsy of lymph node and/or bone marrow aspiration and biopsy.
It’s important that the cancers are diagnosed when they are in nascent stage so that treatment could yield high cure rate and minimize morbidity associated with cancer. Please have a regular follow up and health checks with your primary care physician to stay healthy.
