Israel Fights Coronavirus, Partnering with the International Community

Consul General of Israel to South India, Ms. Dana Kursh

Living here in namma Bengaluru, I’m admiring the way India is combating the Coronavirus epidemic. With the same admiration, I follow what is happening back home in Israel and how both our nations are showing resilience & utilizing innovation. Here, we are still under lockdown, but back in my homeland, restrictions are starting ease, as Israel made a tough choice early on, and was one of the first countries to close its borders and go into full lockdown. These early measures have proven themselves with low infection rates, and even lower mortality rates, enabling the country to return slowly to full operation.

Looking beyond early stage prevention, especially when looking from the “Silicon Valley of India”, it is clear that innovation is the key. In Israel, just as in India, we are finding solutions for this new world we are facing. From respirators, start-ups and vaccines, through to drive-through testing centres and telemedicine, Israel is leading the global fight to prevent the spread of the virus. Startups have come up with solutions for hand sanitation, symptom detection, antimicrobial fabrics, and more. An innovative respirator developed by Israel’s Air Force has joined forces with Microsoft Israel, Magen David Adom (Israel’s national emergency response service), and others. This respirator has the potential for mass-production at a low cost and is ‘open source’, meaning that its design and assembly information is available to the public.

Israel’s hospitals are also on the front lines of combatting the virus, and have led the way by sharing their best practises with global partners. Just his week I participated in a webinar with Indian & Isreali hospital leaders, including our Bengalurean Rainbow Hospital, sharing experience and best practices. Sheba Hospital has implemented a first-of-its-kind telemedicine program to minimize contact between medical staff and coronavirus patients, treating not only inpatients, but also patients who are quarantined at home. A variety of advanced, specialized technologies are being employed as part of the hospital’s innovative response to minimize the risks of coronavirus. To this end, Israel Aerospace Industries teamed up with the Ministry of Defence and the Technion to develop a remote monitoring system that effectively minimizes contact between carers and patients. Using advanced optical sensor technology, radar and AI, this new system can record patients’ vital signs from afar, diminishing the risk of exposure for medical staff.

The Israel Institute for Biological Research announced (05/05/2020) a major breakthrough in finding an effective treatment for COVID-19. The Institute, run by the Defence Ministry, has successfully isolated a monoclonal antibody that effectively neutralises the virus using blood samples taken from coronavirus patients, making it the first lab in the world to have achieved this major milestone. The Institute is now seeking a biological manufacturer to mass produce the treatment for clinical use, while it continues to characterise this antibody and others.

With the world looking at the tech & biotech industries for solutions, one cannot ignore the importance of the Israel-India ongoing partnership. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, spoke with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and discussed technological cooperation as well as the various steps to deal with the spread of the coronavirus. The scope of medical cooperation and technical data analysis between India and Israel in the context of dealing with COVID-19 pandemic is wide. Just this week, Israel has suggested 50 topics in health and science where it can cooperate with India to work on solutions for COVID-19. The potential for partnership, on the federal, as well as state level, is immense, and our team in the Consulate General of Israel to South India, is looking forward to continue partnering with governments, Academia and the private sector, not only to heal our world from this pandemic, but also reviving the economy and livelihood of our nations.

COVID 19 Effect:Suspension of IPL 2020 is a big setback to athletes and supporting staff? As it is an important source of livelihood for many?

Not much attention has been paid towards sportspersons, athletes, coaches and their supporting staff during COIVD 19 lockdown?

(Authored By : Mr. Yeragaselvan Kumarasamy, Founder & CEO, Run Adam (an omni-channel sports-aggregation platform)) https://runadam.com/

Change is an incessant constant and the Covid-19 pandemic is undoubtedly a marker for a major change in all aspects of life, of methods of living and working and of lifestyles. Hit hard by the lockdown imposed across India due to the pandemic  the sporting fraternity too will need to incorporate  many changes that will have long term implications on the way games are played.
There is a lot talked about how many sections have been affected by the pandemic. However, not much attention has been paid towards  sports persons, athletes, coaches and their supporting staff including nutritionists, physiotherapists, sports psychologists right down to groundsmen who have not only hit hard by the lockdown imposed across India due the pandemic but the effects of it are very damaging for them in many ways.
The huge fear that they face is not being able to do what they love to do and that is playing the sport. The situation is quite challenging especially for competitive athletes who have been training hard for years to participate in global events like Olympics etc. For these people lack of activity is a major challenge as their entire day is mapped out for every minute right from when they wake up to the minute they go to sleep.
Thousands of athletes have had to put their dreams on hold following the lockdown the stress of the delay could take a toll on the mental health of athletes. Health experts warn that prolonged isolation could take a big mental toll on people whose livelihoods and self-esteem are intrinsically linked to the competition.
Along with these athletes, a lot of other people too are equally involved and are in a shock phase, probably confused due to all the chaos that the situation has caused. They see themselves as athletes and are very tied up in their involvement with the sport and their inability to participate in training activities they find themselves in a hopeless position.
Coaches and psychologist who work with professional athletes are worried about their coping strategies one is the competitive edge that they have and the other being able to really push themselves physically for six-seven hours a day. They don’t that anymore, which is making it very difficult for all concerned.
Many sports bodies have reacted by offering support to these athletes and their supporting co-workers. However, for some sporting associations due to other priorities, these sports bodies also have to make spending cuts reducing their ability to help.
The big setback came with the BCCI announcement to suspend IPL 2020 until further notice in the wake of COVID 19 outbreak and subsequent extension of lockdown till May 3rd by Indian Government.  It has had a major impact on players & fans.
Being deeply connected with athletes, the IPL is not only an important source of livelihood for many thousands and the potential loss is having a huge impact on those associated with it.
The high-level, high-profile professional athletes can handle this loss of income but there are a lot of athletes on the fringe. For the supporting staff, a few months of loss of activity will have a significant loss of income as well as their well-being.
The government must extend support to all those supporting the athletes in this critical time or increasing private sector participation by allowing incentives under CSR scheme to those supporting sporting activities or making it attractive for them to contribute to a sports body through tax breaks.
Currently, the supporting staff is faced with a daunting challenge of staying relevant in their respective sport even as they stare at a bleak future.
A certain economic downturn and its potential fallout is looming as many are facing uncertainty about the year ahead. The only positive is that there is some predictability that big events like IPL  and T20 World Cup might actually take place after some rescheduling.
The government should consider permitting training and allied sporting activities with strict implementation of the social distancing and hygiene norms. Many associations are requesting the government to allow these in low-exposure-risk areas, even if the lockdown has been extended with a plan to gradually exit in phases.
The short and medium-term changes have affected everyone across the sporting world. Adopting the right attitude is a key underlining factor that will determine the ease of change and its effectiveness. It is critical that we have confidence in the future. Half the battle needs to be won in the mind. Positivity will beget the right decisions and hopefully, everything will return to what it was before the global coronavirus pandemic hit the sporting world.

Corporates expect economic normalcy to take nearly 17 months: TRA Whitepaper

Global recession, health crisis, bleak economic outlook, social unrest on top of corporate concerns

Bangalore . 13th May, 2020: A fortnight after it released a survey on consumer insights, TRA Research, a consumer insights and brand analytics company today released its second report “TRA’s Coronavirus Corporate Insights 2020″, a whitepaper from a research conducted across 16 cities with 101 corporate respondents from 8th April to 4th May 2020. The TRA survey indicates that corporates, on average, perceive it will take 66.1 weeks (16.5 months) to achieve economic normalcy, while for full health normalcy, they feel it will take 15 weeks (3.8 months) more.

N. Chandramouli, CEO, TRA Research, elaborated on the findings, “The biggest concerns of Corporate India are of Global recession which is 66% on the Worry Index, followed by India’s inability to overcome the health crisis at 59%. Three important factors of Business survival, India’s bleak economic outlook and Social unrest, all had a Worry Index of 57%, showing the many concomitant challenges that corporate India was grappling with at the moment. Shaky Consumer Confidence remains lowest on the Worry Index at 39% showing ‘Little Worried’, possibly implying corporates are currently more concerned about the larger picture leading to disruptions.”

“Considering the Covid impact, the highest was Revenues for the year at 75% Impact Index, followed by Advertising at 64% impact, showing that the first cuts were in immediately controllable expenses, especially in the light of the negligible demand for many sectors during the lockdown”, Chandramouli added.

The survey revealed the Coping-Worry gap among Upper Management was the highest at 32%, and perhaps there is just too much on the plate of the top management to cope with everything together. The other challenge of the Upper Management is perhaps the external show of strength they have to present, despite their personal fears and anxieties.

On the priority of corporates, OPEX reduction has the top slot with 69.5% priority, CapEx reduction is the second highest priority at 65.5%, Business Strategy taking 64.5% priority, Company Operations are at 56.5% priority and, contrary to what many would believe, Manpower cost reduction is the very last what that corporates look at, which stands at 51.5% priority.
