BENGALURU / September 7, 2021 – Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is the leading cause of female infertility as it is responsible for 85% of ovulatory disorders in women. Yet, 60% of women suffering from PCOS manage to become pregnant without any medical assistance, according to Dr. Vidya V Bhat, Laparoscopic Surgeon and Fertility Specialist and Medical Director of RadhaKrishna Multispecialty Hospital, Bengaluru.
As per the results of a large-scale survey conducted across India in 2020, about 16% of women between 20-29 years suffer from PCOS. “High levels of male sex hormones (androgens) and irregularity in the production of sugar levels in the bloodstream causing insulin resistance adversely affect a woman’s menstrual cycle. This condition can prevent the release of an egg on a regular basis, or even stop it completely, which makes it challenging for patients of PCOS to conceive easily. Sometimes it can even lead to miscarriage,” said Dr. Vidya V Bhat.
Obesity is a common finding in women with PCOS, affecting 40–80% of patients. Other causes include hormonal imbalance, stress levels, lifestyle changes, insulin resistance and metabolic defects. The treatment of PCOS-induced infertility involves monitoring ovulation, surgery for improving fertility, assisted reproductive technology, medications and weight management.
PCOS is a common but serious endocrine disorder in women of reproductive age that can lead to lifelong complications and other serious conditions. Initially, this condition is asymptomatic in young girls, progressing toward menstrual irregularities, obesity, hyper-androgenism in late puberty. Eventually it leads to insulin resistance, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and infertility around middle age. Yet, many women remain unaware that they are suffering from PCOS, according to the doctor.
Of late, this disease is on the rise due to environmental changes as well as lifestyle disorders. India has witnessed a spike of 30 percent in cases of PCOS in the last few years, a trend which got exacerbated due to the lifestyle changes enforced by the pandemic. Being home-bound, lack of exercise, online ordering of junk food, binge watching TV, and irregular sleep patterns have led to an increase in average weight gain among women. This, coupled with ignoring irregular or heavy menstrual cycles in the lockdown period, is driving the spike in PCOS cases.
Said Dr Vidya V Bhat: “Irregular follow-ups with the doctor during the Covid times is leading to an increase in the incidence of PCOS, especially among women who are undergoing treatment for infertility. This disorder is also linked with higher levels of circulating insulin, and there is a spike in the number of diabetic patients during the lockdown. Sedentary lifestyle and becoming a couch-potato are increasing the chances of relapse of PCOS in patients, or the disorder becoming much more severe with increased symptoms.”
PCOS can happen due to causes such as excessive consumption of saturated fat, weight gain, inflammation, chemicals and hormonal imbalance. Lifestyle management is very important for PCOS patients, including regulated diet, physical exercise and management of blood sugar and hypertension.
Bengaluru, Friday September 3,2021: Blindness is a major cause of concern around the world today. In India, an estimated 20 lakh people suffer from blindness caused by damages to the cornea, the clear transparent outer layer of the eye. More than a quarter of the cases of corneal blindness can be resolved if transplantations are done without delay. Just like any other body organ, the cornea of the eye can also be donated after death. “With tens of thousands of corneal blindness cases being added every year to the existing burden, the annual demand for corneal transplantations is on the rise and to meet this dearth, the public needs to be educated on eye donation. On this National Eye Donation Fortnight let us highlight the importance of pledging our eyes,” says, Dr. Archana S, Regional Head- Clinical Services, Dr. Agarwals Eye Hospital, Karnataka.
He further adds that Dr Agarwal’s Eye Hospital offers the unique PDEK procedure where a single donated eye can render vision to two or more people.
Who can donate eyes?
An eye donor can belong to any sex or age. However, there are a few diseases which can restrict the donation of the eyes like AIDS, Hepatitis B and C, Rabies, Septicaemia, Acute leukemia (Blood cancer), Tetanus, Cholera, and infectious diseases like Meningitis and Encephalitis.
Dr. Archana S mentions a few points for public awareness in relation to eye donation.
Eyes can be donated only after death.
Eyes must be removed within 4 – 6 hours after death.
Eyes can be removed by a registered medical practitioner only.
The eye bank team will visit the home of the deceased or the hospital to remove the eyes.
Eye removal does not delay the funeral since the entire procedure takes 20-30 minutes only.
A small quantity of blood will be drawn to rule out communicable diseases.
Eye retrieval does not cause disfigurement.
The identities of both the donor and the recipient are kept confidential.
In relation to eye pledge and eye collection procedures, the eye donation of the deceased has to be authorized by the next of kin even if the deceased has pledged his or her eyes.
Use of spectacles for short sightedness, long sightedness or astigmatism or even those operated for cataract is also not a contraindication.
Enucleation of the Eyes
Eyes are to be enucleated preferably within six to eight hours of death. After enucleation the eyes are sent to eye banks for evaluation and further distribution. The eyes are evaluated by trained technicians as per the international standards. The deserving blind patients are called in accordance with the waiting list. Even emergency cases are dealt with in conformity with the guidelines prescribed.
Importance of Eye Donation
On the importance of eye donation, Dr. Archana S says, “Due to the little or no awareness, social or religious reservations, and various other reasons eye donation is yet to get its due importance in our country. Various misunderstandings and misbeliefs act as a roadblock for this noble deed.”
She further adds, “Today the number of eye donations made is only about 50,000 per year in India – in other words, eyes are collected only from less than 0.5% of about 1 crore people who die in the country in a year. Therefore, awareness must be created about eye donation. Also, infrastructure such as eye banks and research centers must be increased to facilitate more eye donations.” At times when eye donations cannot be used for transplantation, they are forwarded for research and education. Whole eye research has led to advancements in the understanding of the cause and effects of conditions such as glaucoma, retinal disease, eye complications of diabetes and other sight disorders.

ನೂತನ ಸಂಕೀರ್ಣದ ವಿವರ : ‘ ಶ್ರೀಶಾರದಾದೇವಿ ಕಣ್ಣಿನ ಆಸ್ಪತ್ರೆ ಮತ್ತು ಸಂಶೋಧನಾ ಕೇಂದ್ರವು 16-6-2002ರಂದು ಮಹಾಮಾತೆ ಶ್ರೀ ಶಾರದಾದೇವಿಯವರ 150 ನೇ ಜನ್ಮದಿನೋತ್ಸವದ ಶುಭಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಶ್ರೀರಾಮಕೃಷ್ಣ ಮಠ ಮತ್ತು ಮಿಷನ್ನಿನ ಉಪಾಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರಾದ ಶ್ರೀಮತ್ ಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಗೌತಮಾನಂದಜೀ ಮಹಾರಾಜ್ರವರ ಅಮೃತಹಸ್ತದಿಂದ ಆರಂಭವಾಯಿತು . ಅಂದಿನಿಂದ ನಿರಂತರವಾಗಿ ಅಂಧತ್ವ ನಿವಾರಣಾ ಯೋಜನೆಯಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಈವರೆಗೆ ಸುಮಾರು 3200 ಕ್ಕೂ ಮಿಗಿಲಾದ ನೇತ್ರ ಶಸ್ತ್ರಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆಗಳನ್ನು ನೆರವೇರಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ . ಇದೇ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಖ್ಯಾತ ನಾರಾಯಣ ನೇತ್ರಾಲಯದ ಸಹಕಾರದಿಂದ ಮಕ್ಕಳ ನೇತ್ರ ಶಸ್ತ್ರಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆಯನ್ನೂ ಆರಂಭಿಸಲಾಯಿತು . ಅನಂತರ , ತಜ್ಞರ ಸಹಕಾರದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಆರು . ತಿಂಗಳ ಮಗುವಿನಿಂದ ಹಿಡಿದು ಹದಿನೈದು ವರ್ಷದ ಮಕ್ಕಳವರೆಗೆ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮವಾದ ಸುಮಾರು 146 ಶಸ್ತ್ರಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆಗಳನ್ನು ನಡೆಸಲಾಗಿದೆ . ಇದೇ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ , ನಮ್ಮ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಯ ಆಶ್ರಯದಲ್ಲಿ , ಅನೇಕಾನೇಕ ವೈಜ್ಞಾನಿಕ ಸಂಶೋಧನಾ ಅಧ್ಯಯನಗಳನ್ನು ನಡೆಸಲಾಗಿದೆ . ಪ್ರಖ್ಯಾತ ನೇತ್ರತಜ್ಞರಾದ ಡಾ . ಭುಜಂಗ ಶೆಟ್ಟಿ , ಡಾ . ವಸುಧಾ , ಡಾ . ನರೇಶ್ , ಡಾ . ನರೇಂದ್ರ , ಡಾ . ಕೌಶಿಕ್ ಹೆಗಡೆ , ಡಾ . ಸುಭಾಶ್ ಚಂದ್ರ , ಡಾ . ಅಶ್ವಿನ್ ಮುಂತಾದವರ ಸಹಕಾರದಿಂದ ಅಂತರರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೀಯ ಮಟ್ಟದ ನೇತ್ರಕ್ಕೆ ಸಂಬಂಧಪಟ್ಟ ಸಂಶೋಧನಾ ಅಧ್ಯಯನಗಳನ್ನು ನಡೆಸಿರುವ ಕೀರ್ತಿ ಈ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಗೆ ಸೇರಿದೆ . ಇದೇ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ , ವಾಟಾ ಟ್ರಸ್ಟ್ ಮತ್ತು ಇನ್ಫೋಸಿಸ್ ಫೌಂಡೇಷನ್ ರವರ ಅಮೂಲ್ಯ ಸಹಕಾರದಿಂದ , 32148 ಮಕ್ಕಳನ್ನು ಒಳಗೊಂಡಂತೆ ( ಎರಡು ಹಂತಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ) ಅಂತರರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೀಯ ಮಟ್ಟದ ಅಧ್ಯಯನ ಒಂದನ್ನು ಕೈಗೆತ್ತಿಕೊಂಡು 2008 ರಿಂದ 2016 ವರೆಗೆ ನಿರಂತರವಾಗಿ ನಡೆಸಲಾಯಿತು . ಅಂತರರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೀಯ ಖ್ಯಾತಿಯ ಡಾ . ದೇವಿಪ್ರಸಾದ ಶೆಟ್ಟರವರ ಸಹಕಾರದಿಂದ ಜೆನೆಟಿಕ್ , ಮೆಟಾಬಾಲಿಕ್ ಮತ್ತು ಅತಿ ಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮ ಪರೀಕ್ಷೆಗಳನ್ನು ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರಯೋಗಗಳನ್ನು ನಾರಾಯಣ ಹೃದಯಾಲಯದ ಪ್ರಯೋಗಾಲಯದಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆಸಲಾಯಿತು , ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೀಯ ಅಂಕಿಅಂಶಗಳ ಸಂಶೋಧನಾ ಕೇಂದ್ರ , ನಾಗರಭಾವಿ , ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು ಇವರ ಅಮೂಲ್ಯ ಮಾರ್ಗದರ್ಶನದಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠಿತ ಅಧ್ಯಯನ ನಡೆದು , ಜಾಗತಿಕ ನೇತ್ರ ಸಂಶೋಧನಾ ನಿಯತಕಾಲಿಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಇದರ ಸಂಶೋಧನಾ ವರದಿ ಪ್ರಕಟಗೊಂಡಿತು , ನಮ್ಮ ಶ್ರೀ ಶಾರದಾದೇವಿ ಕಣ್ಣಿನ ಆಸ್ಪತ್ರ ಹಾಗೂ ಸಂಶೋಧನಾ ಕೇಂದ್ರವು ರಾಜ್ಯ , ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರ ಹಾಗೂ ಅಂತರರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೀಯ ಮಟ್ಟಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ತನ್ನದೇ ಆದ ಛಾಪನ್ನು ಮೂಡಿಸಿದೆ .
‘ ಶ್ರೀ ಶಾರದಾದೇವಿ ಕಣ್ಣಿನ ಆಸ್ಪತ್ರೆ ಮತ್ತು ಸಂಶೋಧನಾ ಕೇಂದ್ರ ‘ ಮತ್ತು ‘ ಸ್ವಾಮಿ ವಿವೇಕಾನಂದ ಸಂಘಟಿತ ಗ್ರಾಮಾಂತರ ಆರೋಗ್ಯ ಕೇಂದ್ರ’ದ ರಜತ ಮಹೋತ್ಸವದ ಸವಿನೆನಪಿಗಾಗಿ ಇನ್ಫೋಸಿಸ್ ಫೌಂಡೇಷನ್ನ ನೆರವಿನಿಂದ ಅತ್ಯಾಧುನಿಕ ಯಂತ್ರೋಪಕರಣಗಳನ್ನು ಒಳಗೊಂಡ ಒಂದು ಸುಸಜ್ಜಿತ ಆಸ್ಪತ್ರೆಯ ಸಂಕೀರ್ಣವನ್ನು ಇದೀಗ ಉದ್ಘಾಟನೆಗೆ ಅಣಿಪಡಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ . ಇಡೀ ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಭಾರತದಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ಬಹುಶಃ ಇದು ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಸುಸಜ್ಜಿತವಾದ ಹಾಗೂ ಆಧುನಿಕ ತಂತ್ರಜ್ಞಾನವನ್ನು ಅಳವಡಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಿರುವ ಏಕೈಕ ಗ್ರಾಮಾಂತರ ಕಣ್ಣಿನ ಆಸ್ಪತ್ರೆ ಮತ್ತು ಸಂಶೋಧನಾ ಕೇಂದ್ರ . ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ಪೂರಕವಾಗುವಂತೆ ಭಾರತದಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ವಿಖ್ಯಾತವಾದ ಮಿಂಟೋ ಕಣ್ಣಾಸ್ಪತ್ರ ಹಾಗೂ ಪ್ರಾದೇಶಿಕ ನೇತ್ರ ಚಿಕಿತ್ಸಾ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆ ತನ್ನ 125 ನೇ ಸಂಸ್ಥಾಪನಾ ದಿನದ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಕೇಂದ್ರವನ್ನು ತನ್ನ ಗ್ರಾಮೀಣ ನೇತ್ರ ಚಿಕಿತ್ಸಾ ಯೋಜನೆಯಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಒಡಂಬಡಿಕೆ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡಿರುವುದು ಹೆಮ್ಮೆಯ ವಿಚಾರವೇ ಸರಿ , ಆ ಪ್ರಕಾರ ನೇತ್ರತಜ್ಞರು ಹಾಗೂ ದೃಷ್ಟಿಮಾಪಕರು ಈ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಗೆ ನಿಯೋಜಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟಿರುತ್ತಾರೆ , ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಇನ್ನೂ ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠ ಮಟ್ಟದ ಸೇವೆಯನ್ನು ಸಲ್ಲಿಸುವ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆ ಈ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಗೆ ಒದಗಿ ಬಂದಿದೆ , ನೂತನ ಆಸ್ಪತ್ರ ಸಂಕೀರ್ಣ ಮತ್ತು ಹೊರ ರೋಗಿ ಕೇಂದ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಸುಮಾರು ಮೂರು ಕೋಟು ರೂ . ವೆಚ್ಚದಲ್ಲಿ ನಾನಾ ರೀತಿಯ ಅತ್ಯಾಧುನಿಕ ಯಂತ್ರೋಪಕರಣಗಳನ್ನು ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ . ಈ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಯ ವತಿಯಿಂದ ರೋಗಿಗಳಿಗೂ ಅವರ ಸಹಾಯಕರಿಗೂ ಉಚಿತವಾಗಿ ಊಟೋಪಚಾರ , ಔಷಧಿ , ಶಸ್ತ್ರಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆ ಹಾಗೂ ಸಾರಿಗೆ ಸೌಲಭ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ಒದಗಿಸುತ್ತಿರುವುದೂ ಹೆಮ್ಮೆಯ ಸಂಗತಿಯಾಗಿದೆ .

ವಿಶ್ವ ಆರೋಗ್ಯ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಯ (ಡಬ್ಲ್ಯುಎಚ್ಒ) ವರದಿಯ ಪ್ರಕಾರ, ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಸೇರಿದಂತೆ ಸುಮಾರು 470 ಮಿಲಿಯನ್ ಜನರು ತಮ್ಮ ‘ನಿಷ್ಕ್ರಿಯ’ ಶ್ರವಣ ನಷ್ಟವನ್ನು ಪರಿಹರಿಸಲು ಪುನರ್ವಸತಿ ಅಗತ್ಯವಿದೆ. 2050 ರ ವೇಳೆಗೆ 700 ದಶಲಕ್ಷಕ್ಕೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಜನರು, ಅಥವಾ ಪ್ರತಿ 10 ಜನರಲ್ಲಿ ಒಬ್ಬರು ಶ್ರವಣ ನಷ್ಟವನ್ನು ನಿಷ್ಕ್ರಿಯಗೊಳಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ ಎಂದು ಅಂದಾಜಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ.
ಹೊಸ ಸೌಂಡ್ ಸೆಂಟರ್ ವೈಯಕ್ತಿಕ ಶ್ರವಣ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆಗಳನ್ನು ಪೂರೈಸಲು ಕಸ್ಟಮೈಸ್ ಮಾಡಿದ ಪರಿಹಾರಗಳನ್ನು ನೀಡುತ್ತದೆ, ಸಂವಹನ ಮತ್ತು ಶ್ರವಣ ನ್ಯೂನತೆ ಹೊಂದಿರುವ ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ರೋಗನಿರ್ಣಯದಿಂದ ಹಿಡಿದು ಶ್ರವಣ ಸಾಧನಗಳು ಕೊಕ್ಲಿಯರ್ ಇಂಪ್ಲಾಂಟ್ಸ್ ಮತ್ತು ಸ್ಪೀಚ್ ಥೆರಪಿ ವೈಯಕ್ತಿಕ ಅಗತ್ಯಗಳಿಗೆ ಮತ್ತು ಅವಶ್ಯಕತೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಸೂಕ್ತವಾಗಿದೆ.
ಧ್ವನಿ ಕೇಂದ್ರವು ಟಿನ್ನಿಟಸ್ (ಕಿವಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಿರಂತರ ಅಸ್ವಸ್ಥತೆ ಶಬ್ದ), ಶ್ರವಣ ಸ್ಕ್ರೀನಿಂಗ್ (OAE & BERA), ವೈಡೆಕ್ಸ್ ಡಿಜಿಟಲ್ ಶ್ರವಣ ಸಾಧನಗಳು, ಬ್ಯಾಟರಿಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಶ್ರವಣ ದೋಷವಿರುವ ಜನರಿಗಾಗಿ ಶ್ರವಣ ಸಾಧನಗಳಿಗೆ ವಿಶೇಷ ಸೇವೆಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದೆ.
