AHPI-TN strongly condemns denial of burial for Chennai doctor, urges state government to take swift action

The President of the Tamil Nadu chapter of the Association of Healthcare Providers of India (AHPI-TN), Dr. S. Gurushankar has strongly condemned the recurring incidents of violence taking place against doctors and healthcare workers. Yesterday’s incident of Dr. Simon Hercules, a neurosurgeon from Chennai who died after contracting coronavirus disease, not being allowed to be buried at the burial site, is the worst form of human indignity. How can we forget that he died in in the line of duty while saving these very people from the dreaded disease? He is a martyr in the true sense of the term.

Doctors are being assaulted, abused, and even spat upon, yet we have maintained our composure and are working tirelessly to save as many lives as possible. However, we do not expect such ignominy to fall upon our community in such dire times when all we are asking for is basic respect and that doctors and healthcare staff be allowed to discharge their duties. Doctors, nurses, and healthcare workers of our country are battling COVID-19 without even basic protective gear and are losing their lives while selflessly doing their jobs.

Private hospitals are hardly earning anything now and have a reached a point where they are struggling to pay salaries. Most hospitals are borrowing to pay salaries. Yet we are reaching out to all those in need of care, in this time of distress. It is my earnest request that the public should at least acknowledge that we are doing this out of a sense of responsibility to the society and because the call of our duty goes much beyond the money we make. We are steadfastly supporting the hon’ble CM in this cause to eradicate COVID from our region, however, the government too must take cognizance of all the hard work and long hours that doctors and all the medical staff are devoting to keep this pandemic in check. We fear that if the government doesn’t take some strict action soon, the doctors and other medical staff will lose all their will and motivation to serve the community and then it will become very tough to contain the pandemic.

We urge the state government to take swift preemptive action to make our healthcare staff feel more secure allowing them to go all out in dispensing their duties.

STAY HEALTHY AND SECURED FOR ANY UNCERTAINTIES IN LIFE THIS WORLD HEALTH DAY

Bengaluru April 6th 2020:April 7 of each year marks the celebration of World Health Day. The objective of this day is to create awareness among people to achieve good health and secure their well being. With the rapidly evolving times, it becomes essential to be prepared mentally, physically and financially for all kinds of uncertainties which may surface in the future. At unsettling times like the coronavirus outbreak, most people continue to bear their medical expenses out of their pocket and at times even end up mortgaging their assets due to a shortage of funds. No one should have to choose between good health and other necessities of life, and that’s why securing one’s health becomes imperative.

Planning finances on time and investing in a health insurance plan can be the first step towards ensuring a secured future. Taking suitable cover is another important factor with the increasing cost of hospitalisation, especially the exorbitant ICU charges at the time of a critical illness. Health Insurance plays a significant role in such times and allows one to get better treatments at the hospital.

According to Ms. Anjali Malhotra, Chief Customer, Marketing, Digital & IT Officer, Aviva India, some of the key benefits of health insurance plans are:

·         Coverage against medical expenses

Health insurance acts as a shield to protect your savings in case of unfortunate events like unexpected hospitalization and high medical costs. It ensures you get cover for daycare procedures, illness-related treatment costs, ambulance charges pre- and post-hospitalisation expense. Also, a comprehensive critical health illness insurance policy ensures that you can achieve quality medical treatment anywhere, at any point in time. It is never too late to make the move to invest in insurance plans for financial security.

·         Tax Benefits

The premium paid on a health insurance policy is eligible for deduction under Section 80D of the Income Tax Act. The amount of deduction available is up to Rs 15,000 for individuals or Rs 20,000 for senior citizens (aged above 65 years). Additionally, an amount of Rs 20,000 is also available for exemption towards premium paid for dependent parents. A taxpayer may therefore, maximise tax benefit under section 80D of the Income Tax Act by investing in health insurance.

·         Makes you prepared for uncertainties in life

Medical emergencies can arise anytime, just like the current unexpected Coronavirus outbreak. Also, due to changing lifestyles and increasing stress levels, people are now more prone to a lot of critical illnesses. People can get stressed and anxious due to various surprises that life can spring up. That’s why, health insurance is essential to help manage stress due to insufficient funds for medical treatment at such times. Investing in health insurance at the right time gives a sense of security and prepares you for a better tomorrow.

·         Cashless claim benefit

Health insurance offers cashless claim facility in an unforeseen medical emergency as well as a planned hospitalization. Therefore, one can have a hassle-free medical treatment at hospitals empaneled by the insurance provider, without making out of pocket payments to the hospital. The insurance company settles claims directly with the hospital.

·         Effective financial planning

Setting life goals is the key contributor that drives you to achieve them. People usually strive for financial protection for the family, loved ones and aim to invest adequately for future needs. Buying and investing in good health insurance or critical illness insurance plan is one of the first steps towards effective financial planning. Being financially prepared and secured allows you to manage your savings and investments for the future. Additionally, the taxes you save can be further invested elsewhere, such as, for child’s education or extra-curricular classes, or small investment for business or saving for child’s marriage.

It is alarming that the majority of the Indian population does not have adequate Health Insurance policy. The primary factor is the lack of awareness about the importance of health insurance and financial planning. One must understand that you can enjoy the benefits of health insurance by getting a suitable insurance with appropriate cover. This also helps you and your family creates an adequate cushion any financial exigencies arising out of health issues. So, this World Health Day, pledge to add health insurance to your financial portfolio to protect yourselves and your family against uncertainties of life.

Paralysed Mysore Businessman Walks After 11 Years Treated At Plexus Neuro And Stem Cell Research Centre In Bengaluru For Spinal Cord Injury

Bengaluru March 2020: Anand, a 49-year old businessman from Mysore walks on his own and has new hope for his life after 11 years having received a 4-month treatment at Bengaluru’s Plexus Neuro and Stem Cell Research Centre.

Anand had met with an unfortunate road accident which had a serious impact on his spinal cord resulting in permanent spinal cord injury. It was a devastating event and impacted his overall well-being by affecting him and his family physically, mentally, emotionally and financially. A single man, living with and taking care of his frail elderly parents added more despair to his state of life. Anand was paralysed from neck below and couldn’t even wipe his own tears.
After having consulted many doctors and undergone many treatments, Anand was left with disappointment and no improvement in his health. Finally, he was referred to Dr. Na’eem Sadiq and Plexus in Bengaluru. On evaluating Anand’s medical history, Dr. Sadiq accepted taking on his medical case and assured Anand and his family of using every advanced technology available at Plexus to normalise his life.
At Plexus, Anand underwent a customised treatment approach which was planned after looking into the critical evaluation of his strengths and weaknesses. A group of rehabilitation professionals at Plexus focused on every aspect of his recovery beginning from his poor posture to the use of his hands and legs. The unique ‘Regenerative Rehabilitation Program’ focused on refining his sensation, strength and daily activities including bowel and bladder control.

On completion of his 4-month long treatment, Anand is now able to hold a spoon, eat, write, wear clothes and walk independently with the help of a walker. Anand’s 11-year long tussle finally ended at Plexus and marks the beginning of a new life for Anand and his family.
An overjoyed Anand emphatically said, “I never thought that I would regain the use of my hands and legs but Dr. Sadiq and his team at Plexus have gone beyond my expectations. My fear of falling has vanished and I am now able to grip things with my hands as well as walk for long durations. The environment at Plexus is very homely. They made me feel very comfortable and boosted my confidence in becoming better and independent. I would like to thank Dr. Sadiq and the team at Plexus in giving me a new lease of life.”
Dr. Na’eem Sadiq, Founder and Medical Director, Plexus Neuro and Stem Cell Research Centre said with pride, “Anand and his family came to us with his dangling lifeless feet, an unsteady trunk and deformed hands on a wheelchair. We are extremely happy to see Anand walking out of our Centre on his own. We attribute the successful treatment to Anand’s unwavering belief, motivation and determination in healing and recovering.”

Covid-19 advisory for pregnant women and nursing mothers:

Visionary healthcare leader advises pregnant women to maintain strict social distancing

Bengaluru: With Covid-19 impacting humanity in never-seen-before proportion, visionary healthcare leader Dr. Hema Divakar has advised pregnant women to maintain strict social distancing by avoiding unnecessary visits to hospitals. Young nursing mothers must take adequate measures to ensure that virus is not transmitted to infants.

“Social distancing and frequent handwashing are a must for pregnant women. It is better they stay home and reschedule their routine appointments if they don’t have a pregnancy with associated risks. They can communicate with their doctors on the phone or video call or chat or WhatsApp and sort out minor issues,” advised Dr. Hema Divakar, Technical Advisor to the Union Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India.

The good news is that the virus does not lead to miscarriage, birth defects or premature delivery. It does not influence the health care provider to alter the time and mode of delivery.

“Given what we know about viruses, most cautious approach for mothers infected with the virus is to temporarily separate themselves from their babies while they are experiencing symptoms like a fever or cough. Infected mothers could also consider pumping breast milk and discarding it until they are no longer ill,” she added.

The C.D.C. USA (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) is not advising women infected with the virus or suspected of having it to avoid breastfeeding. Instead, the interim guidance for them is to wash their hands before touching the baby and wear a face mask, if possible, while breastfeeding.

“As time goes on and, inevitably, more pregnant women do contract the virus, we will know more about how the virus behaves, but for now taking sensible precautions – handwashing, social distancing, staying at home, not having visitors – is the most sensible course of action,” Dr. Hema cautioned.
