Bengaluru 11th October 2019: The 26th edition of the two day Indian Plumbing Conference was inaugurated by Hon. Deputy Chief Minister, Dr. C N Ashwath Narayan in the presence of Mr. Tushar Giri Nath, Chairman, BWSSB, Mr. Ariel Seigman, Deputy Consul General, Consulate General of Israel, Mr. G.P. Russ Chaney, CEO, IAPMO Group, USA, Mr. Gurmit Singh Arora, National President, Indian Plumbing Association, Mr. C. S. Gupta, National Secretary, Indian Plumbing Association and Mr. B O Prasanna Kumar, Chairman, Indian Plumbing Association, Bengaluru Chapter. The first day of the conference witnessed a panel discussion on Water Woes of Bengaluru. The conference was attended by 700 delegates and expects to have a footfall of over 10,000 visitors over two days including students and industry professionals. The conference also had an exhibition arena with 45 exhibitors.

Speaking at the inauguration, Hon. Deputy Chief Minister Dr. C N Ashwath Narayan said, “Conservation of water has become the highest priority across the world as the availability of fresh water is hardly three to four percent. The Government of Karnataka is well aware of the water situation in Bengaluru and we are working towards putting the best possible system in place in the next two to three years. We want to minimize the pilferage and wastage of water below 15%. We want to maintain the highest standards with regard to supply and discharge of water. I urge all constituencies in Bengaluru and in Karnataka to give highest priority to water conservation. The plumbing industry can provide employment to a large number of people and the Government is willing to work with the plumbing industry enable necessary skilling. We will provide all support to cater to the requirements of the plumbing industry. We will be happy to integrate any new innovations of the plumbing industry into the system.”

Delivering the Presidential address, Mr. Gurmit Singh Arora, National President, Indian Plumbing Association said, “It is the management of water in the future that will determine its ability to achieve high economic growth and to ensure food for our burgeoning population, water for hygiene and improvement in quality of lives and in ensuring our environmental stability. India is a water stressed country with approximately 1545 cubic meter per capita available per annum. 90% of rural households have no access to piped water and 75% of the Indian households at present, do not have access to clean drinking water. Rain water harvesting and treatment of water and its reuse, need to be completely made mandatory for minimum sized plots or houses. IPA will sign an MOU with NAREDCO, a large Builders Body in India, in the next few months not only to implement apt use of water, but also to ensure correct code based plumbing practices are followed so that any leakages in the system are plugged. We are also exploring collaborations with the Government of Singapore to work with IPA on water conservation initiatives.”

Elaborating on how Israel has become water positive despite majority of the country being a desert,
Mr. Ariel Siegman, Deputy Consul General, Consulate of Israel, Bengaluru, in his keynote address said, “Planning ahead is key. People must be educated on the conservation of water and saving water should become a habit. Pricing is another key element in water management, as people will become conscious about the water they consume as they will be paying a price for it. The other important aspect is that of metering. Every drop of water must be metered so that we get an idea of how much water is being consumed.”

According to Mr. B O Prasanna Kumar, Chairman, Indian Plumbing Association, Bangalore Chapter, “We are also in talks with the Government of Karnataka on how water can be treated at source and how water bodies can be revived. The Government has also assured us that they will make a theme park in Bengaluru where IPA can display water saving devices. This will be similar to rainwater harvesting and recharge parks. The Government is also looking at using water efficient fixtures and fittings for schools. ”

In his address, Mr. Tushar Giri Nath, Chairman, BWSSB said, “Bengaluru is the first city in the country to start metering, which led to it becoming the first city to account for accurate unaccounted water, which is currently at 36% out of which 25% is because of leakages. This amounts to a spend of approximately 1000 crore. Our department is working with builders towards making sub meters compulsory and this will become mandatory soon. We are also working towards making dual piping system to be made mandatory as well. We are also mulling a penalty fee for violations.”

In his address Mr. G P Russ Chaney, CEO, IAPMO Group, USA said, “Along with conservation of water, sanitization is of prime importance. I compliment IPA for collaborating with partners from across the world for mutual benefit.”
