IIM Bangalore Launches India’s First PEVC Centre of Excellence

IIM Bangalore Launches India’s First PEVC Centre of Excellence: Tony James Centre for Private Equity and Venture Capital
Alumnus Mathew Cyriac’s endowment honours global investment leader Tony James

Bengaluru, August 7, 2025:
Marking a significant milestone in India’s alternative investment landscape, the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) has inaugurated the Tony James Centre for Private Equity and Venture Capital — the country’s first Centre of Excellence focused exclusively on private equity and venture capital (PEVC).

The Centre has been established through a generous endowment by Mr. Mathew Cyriac, an accomplished member of IIMB’s PGP Class of 1994, Institute Gold Medallist, and recipient of the 2025 Distinguished Alumni Award. Mr. Cyriac is currently Chairman of Florintree Advisors and Co-Founder of Yali Capital.

The initiative, one of the largest alumni contributions in IIMB’s history, was formalized through an MoU signed on August 24, 2024. The endowment will support the Centre’s development, fund scholarships for PGP and doctoral students, and honour faculty mentors by naming four classrooms after prominent professors from the finance area.

Named in tribute to Mr. Hamilton “Tony” James — former President, COO, and Executive Vice Chairman of Blackstone — the Centre aims to foster global-level research, education, policy dialogue, and industry collaboration in the PEVC domain.

The launch event brought together key figures from the PE, VC, and financial services sectors, highlighting the Centre’s ambition to become a knowledge hub for India’s fast-evolving investment ecosystem.

Speaking at the event, Professor Sourav Mukherji, Dean (Faculty, Alumni Relations and Development), said, “It is heartening to see an alumnus return to give back in such a meaningful way, especially in an area that is vital to both academia and industry. This Centre stands as a symbol of how alumni can inspire future generations by enabling cutting-edge research and fostering a strong sense of institutional responsibility.”

Professor Dinesh Kumar, Director In-charge, IIMB, added, “High-impact research requires serious capital. This contribution by Mr. Cyriac will allow IIMB to attract world-class talent, invest in key infrastructure, and strengthen our global research footprint. It is a major step towards positioning IIMB as a research-driven institution of international repute.”

A Vision for the Future of Indian Investing

In his address, Mr. Mathew Cyriac spoke of the need for innovation in India’s maturing investment market. “As India’s private equity and venture capital space evolves, we need research and strategy that is deeply rooted in the Indian context but aligned with global standards,” he said.

He noted that the concept for the Centre emerged during IIMB’s Golden Jubilee celebrations, and shared that he wanted to give back by building something foundational and future-oriented. “IIMB has always been at the forefront in finance education. I saw an opportunity to strengthen that reputation with a Centre that could make a real difference to the industry and academia alike,” he explained.

Mr. Cyriac emphasized that the Centre would serve a broad spectrum of stakeholders—including students, researchers, PEVC firms, and Limited Partners (LPs)—acting as a bridge between academic insight and industry practice.

He also fondly recalled his student years and acknowledged the faculty members whose guidance had shaped his cohort, dedicating part of the endowment to honour their legacy through classroom naming.

Rotary Cubbonpark Trust and Bangalore Gastro Center Launch Mobile GI Health Initiative in Karnataka

Bengaluru, August 6, 2025:
In a pioneering move to enhance rural healthcare access, the Rotary Cubbonpark Trust, in association with Bangalore Gastro Center, has launched an innovative gastrointestinal (GI) health initiative across Karnataka. With a project investment of ₹3 crore, the initiative aims to deliver advanced medical diagnostics and treatment to underserved communities through state-of-the-art mobile healthcare units.

An Innovative Healthcare Model

Backed by the Infosys Foundation and the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Karnataka, Rotary District 3191 has introduced four specially outfitted mobile medical vans. These units are equipped with high-end diagnostic tools such as endoscopy and colonoscopy systems, enabling on-the-spot screening and early detection of GI disorders.

Filling the Rural Healthcare Gap

The initiative specifically targets patients in remote and rural areas who often lack access to specialized healthcare services due to distance and affordability challenges. By bringing medical services directly to villages, the program bridges a critical gap in timely diagnosis and care.

Fully Equipped Mobile Medical Units

Each mobile unit is designed for maximum functionality and patient comfort. Features include:

Advanced diagnostic equipment (endoscopy and colonoscopy)

Separate rooms for doctor consultation and patient examination

Patient registration and resting area

Ceiling-mounted air conditioning for comfort

Backup generators and UPS systems to ensure uninterrupted services

Community-Centric Approach

The project will work in coordination with Primary Health Centers (PHCs), local doctors, and various Rotary clubs throughout Karnataka. Regular health camps will be held in different locations, offering free consultations, diagnosis, and follow-up care.

Leadership Comments

“We are deeply grateful to the Infosys Foundation and the Government of Karnataka for their support in making this project a reality,” said BR Gowrishankar, Chairman of Rotary Cubbonpark Trust. “Our collaboration with Bangalore Gastro Center will empower us to deliver life-changing healthcare services to thousands in rural Karnataka. We believe this will have a lasting positive impact.”

The announcement was made at a press conference held today at the Press Club of Bangalore by Y.C. Roy, Project Coordinator.

Vaidyuthi Mobility Unveils Gully100 — India’s First Licence-Free Electric Cargo Vehicle for Urban Delivery

Bengaluru, August 6, 2025 — Vaidyuthi Mobility has launched the Gully100, a revolutionary electric three-wheeler designed for urban delivery drivers who hold only a standard two-wheeler licence. This marks a significant shift in India’s urban mobility landscape, as the Gully100 is the first vehicle in its category to leverage recent regulatory changes that no longer require a commercial LMV-3 licence to operate electric three-wheelers.

The vehicle aims to address a long-ignored gap in the logistics sector: the mid-load range (50–400 kg), where current options are either too small or unnecessarily large and costly. Delivery companies have often resorted to overloading bikes or underutilizing autos. The Gully100 offers a purpose-built, efficient alternative for this segment.

A key advantage is driver accessibility. By allowing two-wheeler licence holders to operate the Gully100, Vaidyuthi Mobility expands the eligible driver pool, easing a major constraint for fleet operators. This move also creates new employment opportunities for gig workers and delivery partners.

Under the hood, the Gully100 features a dual-motor system that delivers enhanced torque and traction, especially when fully loaded. The vehicle’s Breathe & Adapt™ suspension — developed in-house — automatically adjusts to uneven urban terrain, potholes, and shifting cargo weight, ensuring smoother and safer rides. Vaidyuthi claims the Gully100 also features the most spacious cabin in its class, built to support long delivery shifts.

Safety has been given top priority. Features like Tilt Guard, an active swing arm, and an electronic differential enhance stability, particularly during sharp turns or on rough roads. These innovations aim to reduce fatigue and improve control during long hours of driving.

“This is one of the safest and most affordable electric three-wheelers we’ve built,” said Hari Vasudevan, Co-founder and CTO of Vaidyuthi Mobility. “We didn’t just build for cost — we engineered the Gully100 for Indian delivery realities: harsh roads, unpredictable loads, and extended work hours.”

Designed for flexibility, the Gully100 will be available in both cargo and passenger variants, and comes with fleet integration capabilities, such as remote diagnostics, app compatibility, and a modular chassis for multiple use cases. The vehicle also qualifies for central and state-level EV subsidies.

According to the company, the Gully100 provides a compelling solution for logistics businesses in sectors like e-commerce, FMCG, and kirana delivery, helping them cut operational costs without needing more heavily licensed drivers or oversized vehicles.

“We’re not just launching an electric vehicle — we’re introducing an entirely new category,” said Raj Kumar, CEO of Vaidyuthi Mobility. “The market has long been stuck between vehicles that are either too small or too big. The Gully100 fits right in the middle — where the real demand is.”

Pre-orders for the Gully100 open in October 2025, with deliveries set to begin in November. Customers can explore specifications and configurations at http://www.vmev.in.
