Kannada Christian Community Seeks Fair Voice in Church Leadership

BENGALURU: The All Karnataka Catholic Christians Kannada Association has raised serious concerns over what it describes as the disproportionate control of coastal Konkani groups in the administration of the Catholic Church across the state. Association president A. Isaac said Kannada-speaking Christians continue to be marginalised, their language overlooked, and their clergy denied equitable opportunities within church structures.

Speaking at a press conference at the City Press Club on Friday, Isaac pointed out that Karnataka has 14 church regions, yet only the Chikmagalur Diocese is led by a bishop from the Kannadiga community. He alleged that promotions for Kannada priests are being stalled due to the dominance of coastal-origin voting groups within the Church’s governance mechanisms.

Isaac also criticised Archbishop Peter Machado and former Archbishop Bernard Moras, stating that neither has addressed long-pending issues affecting Kannada Christians. According to him, crucial positions—including administrative roles, commissions, seminary training centres, and prominent church institutions—remain concentrated in the hands of the “coastal Konkani lobby,” leaving Kannada Christians feeling excluded in their own state.

He said the situation has worsened following recent remarks made by Roy Castellino from Mangaluru, which he termed “insensitive, damaging, and unauthorised.” The comments, he said, have further strained relations within the community.

Calling for urgent steps, Isaac urged the Supreme Patriarch to enforce the 3/1983 circular across Karnataka without delay. He demanded an end to what he called the “coastal monopoly,” and asserted that, just as neighbouring states like Tamil Nadu and Telangana prioritise local leadership, Karnataka too must ensure that its church hierarchy reflects its linguistic and cultural identity.

Isaac emphasised that Kannada should be given precedence in worship across all churches, and that spiritual leaders serving the state’s faithful must be drawn from the Kannada clergy. He also renewed the long-standing demand to elevate the historic Saint Peter’s Guru Math to the status of the Karnataka Provincial Guru Math.

ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು, ನ.19: ಮಾಜಿ ಬಜೆಪಿ ಸರ್ಕಾರ ಜಾರಿಗೊಳಿಸಿದ್ದಂತೆ, ಈಗಿನ ಕೇಂದ್ರ ಸರಕಾರ ಮುಂದುವರಿಸುತ್ತಿರುವ ಭೂ ತಿದ್ದುಪಡಿ ನೀತಿ, ಎಪಿಎಂಸಿ ತಿದ್ದುಪಡಿ, ಜಾನುವಾರು ಕಾಯಿದೆ, ಮತಾಂತರ ನಿಷೇಧ ಸೇರಿದಂತೆ ಜನವಿರೋಧಿ ನೀತಿಗಳನ್ನು ತಕ್ಷಣ ರದ್ದುಪಡಿಸುವಂತೆ ಆಗ್ರಹಿಸಿ, ಸಂಯುಕ್ತ ಹೋರಾಟ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ನವೆಂಬರ್ 26ರಂದು ‘ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು ಚಲೋ’ ಮಹಾ ಪ್ರತಿಭಟನೆಯನ್ನು ಘೋಷಿಸಿದೆ.

ಬುಧವಾರ ನಗರದ ಪತ್ರಕರ್ತರ ಭವನದಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆದ ಜಂಟಿ ಪತ್ರಿಕಾಗೋಷ್ಠಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸಂಘಟನೆಯ ಮುಖಂಡರಾದ ಬಡಗಲಪುರ ನಾಗೇಂದ್ರ, ನೂರ್ ಶ್ರೀಧರ್, ವರಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಿ, ಯಶವಂತ ಟಿ., ಕೆ.ವಿ. ಭಟ್ ಮತ್ತು ಸುಷ್ಮಾ ಮಾತನಾಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

ಸಂಘಟನೆಯು ಸಮಾಜವನ್ನು ಕಾಡುತ್ತಿರುವ 15 ಗಂಭೀರ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಸಾರ್ವಜನಿಕ, ಸರ್ಕಾರ ಹಾಗೂ ಮಾಧ್ಯಮಗಳ ಗಮನ ಸೆಳೆಯುವುದು ಈ ಪ್ರತಿಭಟನೆಯ ಉದ್ದೇಶ ಎಂದು ತಿಳಿಸಲಾಯಿತು. “ರಾಜಕಾರಣಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಕುರ್ಚಿಯ ಚಿಂತೆ; ಹಣವಂತರಿಗೆ ಆಸ್ತಿಯ ಚಿಂತೆ; ಆದರೆ ದುಡಿಯುವವರಿಗೆ ಅತಿ ಮೂಲಭೂತವಾದ ಅನ್ನ–ಸೂರಿನ ಚಿಂತೆ. ಸಮಾಜದ ನಿಜವಾದ ಭಾರ ಹೊರುತ್ತಿರುವ ಕಷ್ಟಜೀವಿಗಳ ಧ್ವನಿ ರಾಜ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ಕೇಳಿಸಬೇಕಾದ ಸಮಯ ಬಂದಿದೆ,” ಎಂದು ಮುಖಂಡರು ಹೇಳಿದರು. ಸಂವಿಧಾನ ದಿನದಂದು ಫ್ರೀಡಂ ಪಾರ್ಕ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಮಹಾ ಪ್ರತಿಭಟನೆ ನಡೆಯಲಿದೆ.

“ಕೇಂದ್ರದ ಮೇಲೆ ಜನರ ವಿಶ್ವಾಸ ಕರಗಿದೆ”

ಬಡಗಲಪುರ ನಾಗೇಂದ್ರ ಮಾತನಾಡಿ, “ಕೇಂದ್ರ ಸರಕಾರ ಜನದ್ರೋಹಿ ನೀತಿಗಳತ್ತ ಸಾಗುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಐದು ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ ನಡೆದ ದಿಲ್ಲಿ ರೈತ ಚಳವಳಿಯ ಲಿಖಿತ ಒಪ್ಪಂದವನ್ನು ಇಂದು ತನಕ ಪಾಲಿಸಿಲ್ಲ. ರೈತರ ಭೂಮಿ ಮತ್ತು ಬೆಳೆಗಳನ್ನು ಕಾರ್ಪೊರೇಟ್‌ಗಳ ಕೈಗೆ ಒಪ್ಪಿಸುವ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾತ್ರ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿದೆ,” ಎಂದು ಆರೋಪಿಸಿದರು.

ವರಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಿ ಆಕ್ರೋಶ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಪಡಿಸಿ, “ನಾಲ್ಕು ಕಾರ್ಮಿಕ ಕೋಡ್‌ಗಳ ಹೆಸರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾರ್ಮಿಕರ ಹಕ್ಕುಗಳನ್ನು ಕುಗ್ಗಿಸಿ, ಕಡಿಮೆ ವೇತನದಲ್ಲಿ ಗುರಿವರ್ಧಿತ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡಿಸುವ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆಯನ್ನು ತರಲು ಯತ್ನಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ವಿದ್ಯುತ್ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರವನ್ನು ಖಾಸಗೀಕರಣ ಮಾಡಿ, ಜಿಎಸ್‌ಟಿ ಮೂಲಕ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ಜನರ ಮೇಲಿನ ಹೊರೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಧರ್ಮದ ಹೆಸರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ದ್ವೇಷದ ರಾಜಕಾರಣ ಮಾತ್ರ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಗೊತ್ತು,” ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿದರು.

ನೂರ್ ಶ್ರೀಧರ್ ಪ್ರಶ್ನಿಸಿ, “ಬಿಜೆಪಿ ತಂದಿರುವ ನೀತಿಗಳ ವಿರುದ್ಧ ಹೋರಾಡಿ, ಅವನ್ನು ರದ್ದುಗೊಳಿಸುವುದಾಗಿ ಭರವಸೆ ಕೊಟ್ಟ ಗ್ಯಾರಂಟಿ ಸರ್ಕಾರ ಈಗ ಏನು ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದೆ? ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ನ್ಯಾಯದ ಮಾತು ಮಾತ್ರ ಉಳಿದಿದೆ; ಕ್ರಿಯಾಶೀಲತೆ ಎಲ್ಲಿದೆ?” ಎಂದು ತೀವ್ರವಾಗಿ ಟೀಕಿಸಿದರು.

National animal rights activist Jeny Leon Lopez, founder of the Jeny Leon Lopez Foundation and EarthSouls, has urged lawmakers and the judiciary to act swiftly and decisively to strengthen enforcement against animal cruelty across the country.

Her appeal follows a deeply disturbing incident that went viral on Monday morning, showing a maid allegedly beating and killing her employer’s pet dog during a routine walk. The video has triggered widespread outrage and renewed calls for tougher action against such crimes.

Expressing anguish over the rising number of brutality cases, Jeny said that police indifference and weak legal follow-up have allowed offenders to go unpunished. “In Bengaluru alone, several FIRs have been filed, yet not a single arrest has been made. Justice for these voiceless beings remains out of reach,” she stated.

Drawing attention to a larger pattern, Jeny noted that cruelty towards animals often reflects deeper violent tendencies that can extend to humans — a connection documented by the FBI’s behavioral crime analysis.

Her foundation is currently pursuing three high-profile cases — the Justice for Bongo case in JP Nagar, the Budigere Cross dog stoning, and the Marathahalli puppy abandonment case — all of which remain pending despite FIRs being registered.

“When compassion becomes a crime and cruelty becomes acceptable, we lose the essence of our humanity,” Jeny warned, calling for urgent policy reform and stronger accountability mechanisms to protect animals and uphold ethical responsibility in society.

Karnataka Police Cap Colour Change Draws Criticism: Calls for Restoration of Traditional Khaki

The Karnataka government’s recent decision to replace the traditional khaki police cap with a blue one has sparked widespread criticism, both from the public and within police circles. The sudden announcement, made under the direction of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, is being described by critics as “unscientific and ill-conceived.”

The new blue cap, they argue, does not complement the khaki uniform that has long symbolized authority, discipline, and service. Unlike khaki, which endures harsh weather conditions, blue fabric tends to fade quickly under sunlight and absorbs heat, leading to excessive sweating, scalp irritation, and potential hair loss. Officers have expressed that the mismatch between the cap and uniform dilutes the professional appearance of the police force, making personnel look less official.

Although many officers are reportedly unhappy with the change, they are unable to voice their concerns publicly due to service restrictions. Critics maintain that the government should focus on pressing public issues rather than cosmetic uniform changes.

Speaking at a press conference held on October 6, 2025, at the Davangere District Press Club, T.L. Ranganath, Founder and State President of the organization, condemned the government’s misplaced priorities. He highlighted ongoing issues such as severe overcrowding in state-run buses and the failure to provide reserved seats for senior citizens, accusing the government of neglecting people’s real problems.

Ranganath further demanded that the government issue an order by November 8, 2025, mandating 50% seat reservations for male passengers in government buses to reduce overcrowding. Failure to comply, he warned, would lead to a statewide protest.

He emphasized that the decision to alter the police cap colour undermines the dignity and recognition of Karnataka’s efficient and disciplined police force. “Such arbitrary decisions tarnish the legacy of one of India’s most respected law enforcement institutions,” he stated.

Prominent leaders, including Sandeep Kumar (State Youth Vice President), Anand Kumar (State Youth Secretary), K. Narayana Swamy, C. Ramayya (State Vice Presidents), and Rekha R. (State Women’s Wing President), were present at the press conference and expressed their solidarity with the demand to restore the traditional khaki cap.

1975ರಿಂದ ಮಹಿಳಾ ಮತ್ತು ಮಕ್ಕಳ ಕಲ್ಯಾಣ ಇಲಾಖೆಯ ವ್ಯಾಪ್ತಿಯಲ್ಲಿನ ಸಮಗ್ರ ಶಿಶು ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿ ಯೋಜನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸೇವೆ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸುತ್ತಿರುವ ಅಂಗನವಾಡಿ ಕಾರ್ಯಕರ್ತೆಯರು ಹಾಗೂ ಸಹಾಯಕಿಯರು ಗ್ರಾಚ್ಯುಟಿ ಕಾಯಿದೆ 1972 ಮತ್ತು ಸರ್ವೋಚ್ಚ ನ್ಯಾಯಾಲಯದ 2022ರ ಏಪ್ರಿಲ್ 25ರ ತೀರ್ಪು ಪ್ರಕಾರ ನಿವೃತ್ತಿ ಉಪಧನೆಗೆ ಅರ್ಹರಾಗಿದ್ದರೂ, ಸರ್ಕಾರ 2011-12ರಿಂದ ನಿವೃತ್ತರಾದ ಸಾವಿರಾರು ಮಹಿಳೆಯರಿಗೆ ಗ್ರಾಚ್ಯುಟಿ ನೀಡದಿರುವುದನ್ನು ಸಂಘಟನೆ ತೀವ್ರವಾಗಿ ಖಂಡಿಸಿದೆ.

2023-24ರಲ್ಲಿ ನಿವೃತ್ತರಾದ ಕೆಲವರಿಗೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ಗ್ರಾಚ್ಯುಟಿ ಹಣ ನೀಡಿರುವುದು, ಇತರ ನಿವೃತ್ತರಿಗೆ ನ್ಯಾಯವಲ್ಲ ಎಂದು ಸಂಘಟನೆ ಆರೋಪಿಸಿದೆ. 30 ವರ್ಷಕ್ಕೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಕಾಲ ಮಹಿಳೆಯರ ಮತ್ತು ಮಕ್ಕಳ ಹಿತಾಸಕ್ತಿಗಾಗಿ ಸೇವೆ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಿದ ಈ ಮಹಿಳೆಯರು ಇಂದು ನಿವೃತ್ತಿ ವೇತನವಿಲ್ಲದೆ, ಗ್ರಾಚ್ಯುಟಿ ಸೌಲಭ್ಯವಿಲ್ಲದೆ ಆರ್ಥಿಕ ಸಂಕಷ್ಟದಲ್ಲಿರುವುದು ವಿಷಾದನೀಯವಾಗಿದೆ ಎಂದು ನಾಯಕರು ತಿಳಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

ಹೋರಾಟದ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಬೇಡಿಕೆಗಳು:

1. 2011-12ರಿಂದ ನಿವೃತ್ತಿಯಾದ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಅಂಗನವಾಡಿ ಕಾರ್ಯಕರ್ತೆಯರು ಮತ್ತು ಸಹಾಯಕಿಯರಿಗೆ ತಕ್ಷಣವೇ ಗ್ರಾಚ್ಯುಟಿ (ನಿವೃತ್ತಿ ಉಪಧನೆ) ನೀಡಬೇಕು.


2. ಸರ್ಕಾರವು ನಿವೃತ್ತಿಯಾದ ಎಲ್ಲರಿಗೂ ಕಡ್ಡಾಯವಾಗಿ ನಿವೃತ್ತಿ ವೇತನ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆ ಜಾರಿಗೆ ತರಬೇಕು.

ಮಹಿಳಾ ಮತ್ತು ಮಕ್ಕಳ ಕಲ್ಯಾಣ ಇಲಾಖೆಯು ಸರ್ವೋಚ್ಚ ನ್ಯಾಯಾಲಯದ ತೀರ್ಪನ್ನು ಪಾಲಿಸದೆ ಗ್ರಾಚ್ಯುಟಿ ಕಾಯಿದೆ 1972 ಹಾಗೂ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಸರ್ಕಾರದ ಗ್ರಾಚ್ಯುಟಿ ನಿಯಮಾವಳಿ 1973 ಉಲ್ಲಂಘನೆ ಮಾಡಿರುವುದಾಗಿ ಸಂಘಟನೆ ಆರೋಪಿಸಿದೆ.

“ಅಂಗನವಾಡಿ ಕಾರ್ಯಕರ್ತೆಯರು ಮತ್ತು ಸಹಾಯಕಿಯರು ಇಡೀ ಜೀವನವನ್ನು ಸಮಾಜ ಸೇವೆಗೆ ಮುಡಿದಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಈಗ ಅವರ ಹಕ್ಕುಗಳನ್ನು ಕಸಿದುಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದು ನೈತಿಕವಾಗಿಯೂ, ಕಾನೂನುಬದ್ಧವಾಗಿಯೂ ಅನ್ಯಾಯ,” ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿದರು.
