> Apomorphine, available both as injections and infusion pumps, is manufactured by Britannia Pharmaceuticals of the UK

> It will initially be distributed in India by Vikram Hospital, Bengaluru, and made available in select centers across the country

> The powerful new drug stimulates the production of dopamine by nerve cells in the brain

> It gives relief to patients within a couple of minutes, compared to other treatments for Parkinson’s which take 30 minutes to 1 hour to show their effect

> Apomorphine is an effective alternative to Direct Brain Stimulation surgery for patients in the middle stages of Parkinson’s Disease

BENGALURU / December 6, 2018: In a boon to patients in the middle stages of Parkinson’s Disease, Vikram Hospital Bengaluru, in association with the UK-based specialty pharmaceutical company Britannia Pharmaceuticals, has launched Apomorphine for the first time in India. This powerful new drug stimulates the production of dopamine by nerve cells in the brain, providing quick and effective relief to patients and improving their quality of life. Apomorphine, available both as injections and infusion pumps, has been popular in the West for over 15 years in the management of Parkinson’s, but Indian patients could not benefit from it until now.

Said Dr. Prashanth LK, Parkinson’s Disease & Movement Disorders Specialist, Vikram Hospitals, Bengaluru: “Currently in India, patients of Parkinson’s have only two options: either oral treatment for the early stages of the disease, or very expensive Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgery for advanced stages. There was no treatment for the middle stages of the disease. Most patients in India cannot afford DBS. This procedure is also not a choice for all ages or stages of Parkinson’s Disease. Apomorphine is recommended for patients who have started to have motor fluctuations – that is, the effect of oral medications is not lasting long enough for them. It is an effective alternative for patients who are not the right candidates for DBS, or those who do not want to undergo surgery yet. Introduction of apomorphine in’tndia has given an important medical option to doctors in the middle stages of the management of Parkinson’s Disease and improve the quality of life of patients.”

Talking about the availability of Apomorphine in India, Dr. Somesh Mittal, CEO, Vikram Hospital, Bengaluru. said: “Apomorphine, a highly selective dopamine receptor stimulator, is a long-awaited boon for patients of Parkinson’s Disease. It is not an OTC medication but has to be taken under the supervision of a’Movement Disorder Specialist at specialized centres. Since the drug has just been launched in India, It’will initially be distributed through select centers where well-trained movement disorders specialists are available’ In due course, we aim to increase the distribution footprint to cover almost all movement disorder centers and neurology clinics across the country. Vikram Hospital Bengaluru will remain the major center for the availability and distribution of Apomorphine for the foreseeable future.

Said Dr. Vinod Metta, Consultant Interventional Neurologist & Movement Disorders Specialist, King’s College & Imperial Hospitals, London, who is leading one of the biggest sets of patients on Apomorphine in the United Kingdom: “Parkinson’s is a special neurodegenerative disorder for which good symptomatic treatment is available, but there is a huge unmet need for therapeutic options in moderately advanced stages. Even though Apomorphine pumps and pens for continuous medication release have been available in Western countries, they were not yet launched in the Indian market. Apomorphine pens are similar in usage to insulin pens. They work dramatically by giving relief to patients within a couple of minutes, in contrast to other treatments for Parkinson’s which take anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 hour to show their effect. The launch of these therapies was long overdue for Indian patients. These will significantly benefit patient care and reduce the burden of caregivers.”

Said Dr Shivam Om Mittal, Parkinson’s Disease & Movement Disorders Specialist, Vikram Hospitals, Bengaluru: “The current prevalence of Parkinson’s Disease in India is around 300-400 out of 100,000, which is expected to more than double by 2030. It will be a major non-communicable degenerative disorder along with dementia to burden the healthcare system of India. Though majority of the patients are above 50 years of age, no age group is immune to Parkinson’s Disease. Of late, its incidence in younger population is also on the rise.”

He added: ‘The symptoms of Parkinson’s include slowness in daily activities, stiffness of muscles, a change in walking style and tremors of the hands. Many people can also have non-motor symptoms preceding the motor symptoms such as reduction in the sensation of smell, constipation, and shouting, yelling or enacting in sleep. Some of these symptoms can be present for as many as 20 years before clinical symptoms like tremors appear. Dopamine imaging is an effective test to see if suspected patients have Parkinsonism, but it is available only in select centers.”

Said Dr. Prashanth LK, Parkinson’s Disease & Movement Disorders Specialist, Vikram Hospitals, Bengaluru: “Medical therapies can bring significant improvements in the symptoms of Parkinson’s. These medications are meant to increase the supply of dopamine which gets depleted in the body of a Parkinson’s patient. Surgical therapies like Deep Brain Stimulation are available too. Parkinson’s patients need to take medications at timely intervals, which often leads to fluctuating levels of medication in their bodies and irregular benefits. Continuous Dopaminergic Therapy is a method by which the body receives dopamine on a regular and consistent basis, because of which fluctuations associated with medications are negated significantly. With the launch of Apomorphine injections and infusion pumps by Vikram Hospital, Indian patients can now benefit from Continuous Dopaminergic Therapy which till now was only available in Western countries.”

The Conquest V.H.P. collection represent a new achievement in the field of quartz, combining great precision, high technicality and a sporty look, marked by the brand’s unique elegance.

The very well known film actor, Harshvardhan Kapoor, visited on 30 November the Longines boutique located in one of the most popular locations in Bangalore, UB City. This boutique has the latest Longines collection on display that includes iconic timepieces of the brand as well as the new models.

Speaking on this occasion Harshvardhan said, “I have always valued Longines timepieces and when I heard about the uniqueness of the Conquest V.H.P., the admiration for the brand went a couple of notches higher. It is amazing how a company with more than 185 year of heritage still innovates while keeping its elegance untouched. Thank you for letting me be a part of this celebration and inviting me to this beautiful boutique that truly reflects the values and ethos of the brand.”

Longines’ history with quartz has been one full of technical innovation and feats. In 1954, the brand developed a first quartz clock, which would quickly set a precision record at the Neuchatel Observatory, It was housed in the mythical Chronocinegines, an instrument that became a pioneer in the history of timekeeping, as it provided judges with a film strip composed of a series of prints at 1/100 of a second, allowing them to follow the movement of the athletes at the moment they crossed the finish line. In 1969, technological mastery led Longines to reveal the Ultra-Quartz, the first quartz movement designed for wristwatches. A huge stride was made in 1984 with the quartz calibre fitted in the Conquest V.H.P., setting a precision record for that time.

As an extension of these historic milestones, the winged hourglass brand presents its new Conquest V.H.P., equipped with a cutting-edge movement developed exclusively for Longines. This movement is renowned for its high degree of precision for an analog watch (± 5 s/yr) and its ability to reset its hands after an impact or exposure to a magnetic field, using the GPD (gear position detection) system. These attractive features are likely responsible for its exceptional movement status, to which a very long battery life and a perpetual calendar must be added. In the true essence of Conquest, the ultimate sports line, this exceptional timepiece brings together high technicality and dynamic aesthetic. The Conquest V.H.P. has thus positioned itself as the standard-bearer of extreme precision.

These steel or black PVD watches are available in the 3 hands/calendar (41 and 43 mm diameter cases) and chronograph (42 and 44 mm diameter cases) versions. The chronograph displays hours, minutes and seconds, a 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock, a 12hour counter at 9 o’clock and a 60-seconct counter in the centre. On each model, changes are made using the intelligent crown, while the E.O.L. indicator can preventatively signal the end of battery life. The Conquest V.H.P. collection models display blue, carbon, silvered or black dials. A steel or black PVD bracelet or a blue or black rubber watch strap completes these exceptional timepieces.

Based in Saint-lmier, Switzerland since -1832, Longines watehmakers enjoy an expertise steeped in tradition, elegance and performance. With generations of experience as the official timekeeper for world championships, and as a partner of international sports federations, Longines has created strong and long-fasting relationships in the worid of sports, over the years. Known for the elegance of its timepieces, Longines is a member of Swatch Group Ltd., the world’s leading watchmaker. The Longines brand, with its winged hourglass emblem, is established in over 150 countries.

Lung cancer fast turning into epidemic in India

Lung cancer today accounts for higher number of deaths in the country than colorectal cancer, prostate cancer and breast cancer
Only 15 percent of cases of lung cancer are curable at the time of diagnosis. In fact, if lung cancer is detected by chest X-ray, it is already too late for the patient
Lung cancer accounts for 5.9% of all new cancer cases diagnosed in India (both sex combined)
On occasion of World Lung Cancer Awareness Month in November, Vikram Hospital is offering lung cancer screening program and smoking cessation therapy

BENGALURU / November 23, 2018: Data from Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) suggests that lung cancer is fast turning into an epidemic in India. It is a high-mortality cancer due to late stage at diagnosis and poor access to affordable healthcare, and today accounts for higher number of deaths in the country than colorectal cancer, prostate cancer and breast cancer. This was said by oncologists from Vikram Hospital, Bengaluru, who were speaking at a workshop to create awareness about lung cancer in the city. Worldwide, November is observed as the lung cancer awareness month.

Said Dr. Niti Raizada, Sr. Consultant Medical Oncologist and Hemato-oncologist, Vikram Hospital, Bengaluru: Only 15 percent of cases of lung cancer are curable at the time of diagnosis. Patients with lung cancer present themselves for diagnosis at a much later stage than other cancers due to the nature of the disease. Early on, people with lung cancer have no symptoms or vague symptoms. In fact, if lung cancer is detected by chest X-ray, it is already too late for the patient. The only effective method for screening lung cancer in early stages is the Low Dose Helical Lung CT, where high-resolution images pick up early lung lesions.”

Said Dr. Suraj Manjunath, Consultant Onco-surgeon, Vikram Hospital, Bengaluru: Lung cancer has one of the highest morbidity and mortality among all cancers. It accounts for 14.5% of all cancers in men and 8.4% in women globally. It is a leading cause of cancer death in men worldwide at 22%, which means that one in five of all cancer deaths in men occur due to lung cancer. Lung cancer accounts for 5.9% of all new cancer cases diagnosed in India (both sex combined), while mortality is 8.82% of all cancers combined.”

Smoking is the single largest contributor for lung cancer. Passive smoking, exposure to carcinogenic toxins like asbestos and radon, radiation and air pollutants are other causes, besides a small percentage of genetic cancer. Exposure of women to smoke from the burning of charcoal for cooking is also a cause of lung cancer. Physical activity may reduce the risk of lung cancer by about 20 percent. Exercise is known to improve lung function and reduce the danger of other diseases too. In the West, there is a small decrease in the number of smokers. However, such trend is not seen in India yet. Moreover, the country is seeing an emerging population of women smokers. The most common age group for lung cancer is 50-59 years, Dr. Niti Raizada said.

Talking about prevention, Dr. KS Satish, Consultant Pulmonologist & Chest Physician, Vikram Hospital, Bengaluru, said: Its never too late for anyone to quit smoking. Quit by age 30 and you reduce the risk of smoking-related diseases by 90 percent! Quit by age 50 and you reduce the risk of smoking-related diseases by 50 percent. Quit by age 60 and you would live longer than smokers in your age group, according to data by the National Cancer Institute in US. In fact, 15 years after one quits smoking, the risk of lung cancer become the same as that of a non-smoker. Two out of every three patients with lung cancer are over 65 years of age, so one gets enough time in life to take steps to avoid this high-mortality disease.

On occasion of Lung Cancer Awareness Month in November, Vikram Hospital Bengaluru is running a lung cancer screening program for chronic smokers, including assessment by paramedical workers and, if required, a low-dose CT scan of the chest. The hospital also offers smoking cessation therapy through a dedicated clinic run by the department of medical oncology to help smokers quit smoking.
