Dr. Agarwal’s Eye Hospital, Whitefield Hosts Walkathon to increase Eye Donation Awareness and Inspire Life-Changing Impact

Bangalore, September 13, 2024: In a remarkable demonstration of resilience and hope, Mrs. Sunita (name changed), a corneal transplant recipient, joined Dr. Amod Nayak, Head of Clinical Services, and Dr. Srinivas L. Gombi, Dean of Academics at MVJ Engineering College, to flag off a walkathon today aimed at raising awareness about eye donation. The event, organized by Dr. Agarwal’s Eye Hospital in collaboration with MVJ Engineering College, sought to underscore the critical need for corneal donations and inspire the community to pledge their eyes.
The walkathon brought together over 80+ students, faculty members, doctors, and hospital staff, all committed to spreading the message of eye donation. Participants carried placards with thought-provoking messages, advocating for the cause and encouraging the community to give the gift of sight to those in need.

Dr. Amod Nayak, Head of Clinical Services at Dr. Agarwal’s Eye Hospital, emphasized the pressing need for eye donations, stating, “There are thousands of people across the country waiting for corneal transplants. Unfortunately, the demand far exceeds the supply, largely due to a lack of awareness. Through this walkathon, we aim to educate the public and dispel misconceptions surrounding the eye donation process.”

Dr. Srinivas L. Gombi, Dean of Academics, also stressed the importance of the initiative, saying, “Awareness is key to breaking down myths and inspiring more people to pledge their eyes. Paytm, India’s leading payments and financial services distribution company and the pioneer of QR, Soundbox, and mobile payments, today held its 24th Annual General Meeting (AGM). The company’s leadership noted that their focus is on the core payments business and highlighted their commitment to delivering Profit After Tax (PAT) profitability, with a robust, scalable business.

Founder and CEO, Vijay Shekhar Sharma, addressed the shareholders and said, “With commitment to the core payments business, we aim to deliver PAT profitability soon.”

He further added that the company now has a compliance-first approach, rigorously adhering to all regulatory requirements. He also acknowledged the resilience of team Paytm over the past six months. “The past six months have taught us many lessons, giving us the opportunity to thoroughly examine our business processes, compliance and the way we operate from the inside out. I can now confidently assure that we have adopted a compliance-first approach, ensuring our business adheres to every regulation fully, both in letter and spirit,” he said.

Sharma further highlighted Paytm’s significant role in India’s digital payments revolution. Being the pioneers of QR code and Soundbox, Paytm has become synonymous with mobile payments in India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently highlighted these innovations for their significant impact on the nation’s financial landscape during his address at the Global Fintech Fest in Mumbai.

“Today, India stands at a stage where the world is acknowledging its digital payments revolution,” Sharma said. “Our achievements, particularly in mobile payments, have been the subject of global discussions, underscoring our role in this transformation.”

Being leaders in fintech and with a commitment to build for India, Sharma said that the team is ready to replicate the same success in Artificial Intelligence. “Our team is already utilizing AI across all areas—technology, product, business, and operations. Some of these technologies are so advanced that they could potentially form entire businesses on their own. However, we remain focused on our core payments business and cross-selling financial services,” he said.

Currently serving approximately 40 million merchants, Paytm aims to reach 100 million across the country, including diverse merchants such as rickshaw drivers and plumbers. The company’s strategic initiatives include leveraging advanced technology to offer financial services like loans, insurance, and mutual funds, thus broadening its market reach and promoting financial inclusion. The company’s strategy includes cross-selling loans, insurance, and mutual funds through partnerships with major banks and NBFCs, further solidifying its position in the market.

During the AGM, President and Group CFO Madhur Deora told shareholders that the company remains committed to bringing half-a-billion Indians to the mainstream economy through technology led services. He further highlighted the company’s strong financial position, noting a robust balance sheet with a cash balance of Rs 8,500 Crore.

Paytm recently secured the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) approval from the Government of India and will soon apply for a payment aggregator licence from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). As Paytm continues to grow, its focus on core payments, scalable business models, and a strong compliance framework underpins its commitment to enhancing financial inclusion across India.

GITAM and DATRI Unite to Showcase the Power of Blood Stem Cell Donation

Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, August 28th, 2024 – In a profound demonstration of compassion and medical science, Suman and Jeetender Jain experienced an emotional reunion with Ganapathi Rao, the selfless individual whose blood stem cell donation saved their son Arpit’s life. This inspiring encounter unfolded at a Donor-Recipient Meet co-hosted by DATRI and the Gitam Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (GIMSR) in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, on August 28th, 2024.

Overwhelmed with gratitude, Suman and Jeetender Jain expressed their profound appreciation to Ganapathi, recognising him as a beacon of hope during their darkest hour. “You have gifted our son a second chance at life when all seemed lost. Our family will forever be indebted to your extraordinary act of kindness,” Suman Jain said.

Reflecting on his experience, Ganapathi Rao remarked, “Witnessing the profound joy my donation has brought to this family is truly humbling. It reinforces the belief that even small acts of selflessness can create ripples of positive change.” Ganapathi’s journey to donation was not without its hurdles, as he bravely overcame his fear of needles and even a brief illness during the collection process, showcasing his unwavering commitment to saving a life.

This event underscored the life-saving potential of blood stem cell donation, highlighting how such acts can bridge the gap between life and death for those battling severe blood disorders. The DATRI Donor-Recipient Meet offered a platform for personal connection, fostering deeper community engagement and awareness around the critical need for more donors.

The event’s chief guest, Sribharat Mathukulili, honourable member of Lok Sabha representing Visakhapatnam commended the remarkable recovery from life-threatening blood cancer and acknowledged DATRI’s pivotal role in facilitating such miracles. He said, “Stem cells uniquely self-renew and create various cell types, making them vital for treating blood cancers and saving lives. The process is simple and relatively painless. Donors can easily register with a buccal swab, and the donation itself is similar to giving blood, involving minimal discomfort compared to traditional bone marrow transplants. It was heart-warming to see Mr. Ganapathi Rao, a Vizag-based donor, meeting his recipient, Arpit Jain, a 19-year-old patient suffering from Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia. In a world often driven by self-interest, let the story of Ganapathi and Arpit remind us that the greatest gift we can give is a part of ourselves.”

Prominent guest Kona Srikar Bharat, an Indian international cricketer who plays as a wicket-keeper batsman for the Indian cricket team, Andhra in domestic cricket, and Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL, also attended the event, lending his support to the cause.

Sribharat Mathukulili and Kona Srikar Bharat took a significant step by participating in a swab test to raise awareness about the importance of blood stem cell donation. Their involvement underscored their commitment to the cause and set an example for others, highlighting how simple actions can make a big difference in saving lives.

He noted, “For countless patients battling blood cancers and disorders, a blood stem cell transplant represents their sole beacon of hope. Ganapathi’s journey began in 2017 when he registered as a blood stem cell donor during a drive at his workplace, a jewellery showroom. The showroom Head, Rana Uppalapati, a staunch DATRI supporter, played a crucial role in encouraging Ganapathi throughout the donation process. Rana remarked, “Witnessing the profound impact of a blood stem cell donation firsthand has been an immense privilege. I urge everyone to contribute to DATRI’s noble cause through donor registration or fundraising.”

The event saw enthusiastic participation from over 300 medical students from GIMSR, many of whom registered as potential blood stem cell donors. This active involvement embodies the spirit of compassion and service that defines GITAM’s educational and ethical values, emphasising the institution’s commitment to societal well-being.
