LETTER FROM OUR PRESIDENT TO INVESTORS.

Subject: Clarification on media reports about our funds

Dear Investor,

I am personally writing to you today, to address some immediate concerns created by some well-intentioned but factually incorrect reporting across various media channels. Let me provide some clarifications point by point:

1: Reported: Winding up of the schemes means that my money is lost

Fact: This is factually incorrect. We have communicated the reasons and market circumstances that led us to take this extremely difficult decision which was taken purely to protect value for our investors. As the schemes liquidate portfolio holdings subject to market conditions, receive coupon payments and scheduled maturities, the Trustees will start to return monies to investors at the earliest instance in compliance with regulation 41(2)(b) of SEBI (Mutual Fund) Regulations 1996.

2: Reported: The schemes invested in risky, unrated papers

Fact: The schemes followed a consistent investment strategy of investing in investment grade papers across the credit rating spectrum, that is to say, from AAA through to A rated papers. This strategy served the schemes and its investors well till recent times. The schemes were able to generate significant cash flows even during the last 6 months which were more turbulent times for the credit markets. For example, the schemes were able to generate significant cash from the portfolio holdings, a majority of that from papers rated AA and below.

3: Reported: The liquidity problem is not related to the Covid-19 pandemic

Fact: These schemes followed a consistent strategy of investing across the credit rating spectrum and have done so for many years, and across multiple market cycles. The schemes have been able to manage through these cycles and provide daily liquidity. Many of these schemes have been in existence for more than 10 years with a similar strategy. The current Covid-19 pandemic created a severe market dislocation particularly for the types of investments that these schemes hold, though the issue of lack of risk appetite, reduced volumes and illiquidity for corporate bonds was a broader market issue. The inability of the schemes to meet daily redemptions was a direct result of the market situation created by the COVID- 19 pandemic as well as the extended lock-down.

4: Reported: The schemes will not be able to return investor monies for an extended period of time

Fact: Each /scheme has its own maturity profile and in general, shorter duration schemes will be able to return monies to investors faster. The schemes will receive regular coupon payments and maturities. In addition, the schemes will explore all opportunities to monetize the underlying assets in the portfolio, without resorting to any distress sales, such that it can return investor monies at the earliest possible time. It will be the endeavor of the schemes to return these monies well in advance of the maturity dates of the underlying securities.

5: Reported: We should be redeeming our monies from all other Franklin Templeton schemes as these could also be wound up

Fact: The decision to wind up our suite of six yield-oriented schemes was an extremely difficult one and taken only to protect investor interest. It was not a situation in which we hoped to find ourselves. We also recognize this has impacted liquidity for our investors but was necessary in order to preserve value for our unitholders.

Our other fixed income schemes which are open for subscription and redemption, primarily invest in highly liquid securities such as Government Securities, AAA rated bonds or other cash and cash equivalents. These portfolios have the necessary ability to generate liquidity in order to meet redemptions. We have already generated a significant amount of liquidity in these portfolios to meet any redemption requests we may receive.

Our equity schemes remain unaffected and continue to be managed by our experienced and tenured team based in Chennai in line with their investment mandate and fund management philosophy.

6:  Reported: Franklin Templeton is winding up its business in India

Fact: Franklin Templeton has been an early and patient investor in India. We have worked to build a long-term business in India over our 25+ year history here. This is also reinforced by the fact that over 33% of our global workforce is based in India. As affirmed by our global CEO, Jenny Johnson, Franklin Templeton’s commitment to India remains steadfast. We are committed to doing all we can to return monies in the schemes that are wound up at the earliest to investors, and to regain your trust in our brand.

This extraordinarily difficult decision to close six of our schemes in a category that we helped create, was taken as it was the only viable option to preserve value for our investors in the current unprecedented environment.

I hope this note serves to bring you some comfort regarding your investments with Franklin Templeton, whether in the schemes that are wound up, or in our other schemes that continue to be open for subscriptions and redemptions.

I remain committed to bringing you regular updates to help answer your most urgent and important queries.

In case you need any further assistance, please feel free to call our dedicated helpline at 1-800-258-4255 or 1-800-425-4255 from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday to Saturday. Alternatively, you can also e-mail us at service@franklintempleton.com. We will be happy to talk to you.

Indian startup Dhiway joins the ToIP Global Foundation as founding member

Cross-industry Coalition Advances Digital Trust Standards

Governments, nonprofits and private sectors across finance, health care, enterprise software and more team up with Linux Foundation to enhance universal security and privacy protocols for consumers and businesses in the digital era

Bangalore, India, May 6, 2020 – Dhiway, India’s first Verifiable Data Exchange Platform joined the Trust over IP (ToIP) Foundation as a Founding Steering Committee member, to help enable trustworthy exchange and verification of data between any two parties on the Internet. The ToIP Foundation is hosted at the Linux Foundation with the goal of creating a robust common standard that gives people and businesses the confidence that data is coming from a trusted source, allowing them to connect, interact and innovate at a speed and scale not possible today.

Dhiway is a startup out of Bengaluru, India. Founded by technologists with extensive experience in building open source projects which scale, Dhiway is committed to working with open standards in order to drive innovation.  Dhiway builds data interchange systems and enables organizations to deploy governance frameworks to sustain these as sustainable digital assets.

“Our strategic initiatives are designed to bring a higher degree of assurance to the exchange of data between peers, over the Internet and other digital networks. Our participation is aligned with our vision to make the world more transparent and trusted, using digital frameworks that can be universally referenced, understood, and consumed,” said Satish Mohan, Founder & CTO, Dhiway. “We intend to contribute our knowledge and expertise towards the mission of establishing a complete architecture for Internet-scale digital trust that combines cryptographic trust at the machine layer with human trust at the business, legal, and social layers.”

The ToIP Foundation is being developed with global, pan-industry support from leading organizations with sector-specific expertise. The other Founding Steering Committee members include Accenture, BrightHive, Cloudocracy, Continuum Loop, CULedger, esatus, Evernym, Finicity, Futurewei Technologies, IBM Security, IdRamp, Lumedic, Mastercard, MITRE, the Province of British Columbia and SICPA. Contributing members include DIDx, GLEIF, The Human Colossus Foundation, iRespond, kiva.org, Marist College, Northern Block, R3, Secours.io, TNO and University of Arkansas. Dhiway is proud to belong to this foundation, the only Indian company to do so.

The authenticity and verification of data sources is a key challenge for businesses worldwide. The deficit in confidence has an impact on the adoption of key business drivers such as digital identity, verifiable credentials, and smart contracts. The operational efficiency of businesses; ease of access to markets and convenience of transactions are focus areas to build through innovation and introduction of new products and technologies.

“The time has never been more important to advance an integrated stack for digital trust, which is clear from the strong representation of companies across industries that are supporting this work,” said Drummond Reed, interim executive director, ToIP Foundation. “We’re pleased to have Dhiway contributing this work and look forward to the collaboration.”

The Linux Foundation’s open governance model enables the ToIP Foundation to advance a combination of technology and governance standards for digital trust in a neutral forum that supports pan-industry collaboration. An open governance model that can be integrated into the development of the standards for digital trust is essential where the business, legal, and social guidelines for technology adoption impacts human trust and behaviour.

The ToIP Foundation will initially host four Working Groups. The Technical Stack Working Group and the Governance Stack Working Group will focus on building out and hardening the Technical and Governance halves of the ToIP stack, respectively. The Utility Foundry Working Group and the Ecosystem Foundry Working Group will serve as communities of practice for projects that wish to collaborate on the development of ToIP utility networks or entire ToIP digital trust ecosystems.

The ToIP Foundation will host an all-digital launch event on May 7, 2020, at 9:30 PM IST (9AM PDT) that will feature a panel discussion, interoperability demonstration and live Q&A. Register now for the live event. Daimler India Commercial Vehicles Raring to Restart

•      Plant operations resume May 7 in phased approach prioritizing safety

•      Dealers nationwide reopening in accordance with local guidelines

•      Comprehensive health and sanitization program rolled out for all stakeholders

•      Intense preparation by cross-functional team key to success

•      Mr. Satyakam Arya, Managing Director & CEO, Daimler India Commercial Vehicles, said: “DICV’s number one priority is the health and safety of our stakeholders, from our employees and customers to our dealers and suppliers…Every single person in the entire automotive supply chain must work together to avoid infection. That is why it is called a ‘chain’; because every link is vital.”

Chennai – Daimler India Commercial Vehicles (DICV) announced the resumption of plant operations from May 7 in a phased approach that prioritizes the safety of all stakeholders. The company was able to restart less than 24 hours after receiving permission from the local authorities thanks to intensive preparation that began even before the government lockdown came into effect over a month ago.

“DICV’s number one priority is the health and safety of our stakeholders, from our employees and customers to our dealers and suppliers,” said Mr. Satyakam Arya, Managing Director & CEO, Daimler India Commercial Vehicles.

“Being part of the Daimler global network allowed us to see the implications of COVID-19 well before the lockdown was announced here in India. We immediately initiated a Crisis Management Team to steer us safely through this difficult situation,” explained Satyakam Arya.

The Crisis Management Team (CMT) consists of representatives from across the organisation and holds virtual meetings with DICV’s top executives on a daily basis.

“Information and agility is the key to crisis management. With a crossfunctional team we were able to source facts quickly from inside and outside the organisation, then together decide on a course of action which could be implemented or revised at a moment’s notice,” said Sanjay Kumar, General Manager of Facility Management and nominated head of the Crisis Management Team.

The CMT has initiated hundreds of health, safety and sanitization measures over the last few months, ranging from mass cleaning of DICV’s 400 acre Oragadam plant to renovations of facilities designed to ensure social distancing norms are followed. The CMT has also taken charge of tracking the health and safety of the company’s 4000+ employees, plus overseeing the company’s extensive CSR contributions.

Aside from the physical aspect, DICV has additionally conducted an intensive education and communication campaign. All major stakeholder groups have been provided with tailored health and safety manuals, instructional videos and web-based trainings. The information campaign is designed to make sure everyone involved with the company understands the precautions necessary during the pandemic.

“Every single person in the entire automotive supply chain must work together to avoid infection. That is why it is called a ‘chain’; because every link is vital,” commented Satyakam Arya.

The company is ramping up gradually with a minimum workforce of essential employees to start, then a planned move to full capacity as and when the lockdown ends. Dealerships across the country have already begun to reopen as local restrictions ease, ensuring BharatBenz customers have access to the free service and warranty extensions the company began offering at the start of the crisis.
