AFPICON Karnataka 2025 to Champion Revival of Family Medicine in India

Bengaluru, July 2025:
The 5th State Conference on Family Medicine and Primary Care, AFPICON Karnataka 2025, is set to take place on August 3, 2025, at St. John’s Auditorium, Bengaluru. Organized by the Karnataka Chapter of the Academy of Family Physicians of India (AFPI), the event will spotlight the growing relevance of family medicine in India’s healthcare landscape.

Historically, family doctors served as trusted healthcare providers, offering guidance, emotional support, and holistic care to generations. However, in recent decades, the rise of medical subspecialties—primarily hospital-based and organ-specific—has overshadowed the role of generalist practitioners. This shift, though marked by clinical and technological advances, has led to a growing gap in community-based, continuous care.

In response to this gap, family medicine is re-emerging as a distinct clinical specialty, combining person-centered care with broad medical expertise. This model fosters long-term relationships between physicians and patients and addresses healthcare needs holistically—across all ages and life stages.

Healthcare experts continue to stress that primary care forms the backbone of an effective health system. Studies have shown that systems built on strong primary care—delivered by well-trained generalist doctors—are not only more cost-efficient but also provide better clinical outcomes.

India is currently producing nearly 60,000 MBBS graduates annually, and by 2030, this number is projected to surpass one million. With proper orientation and training, a significant portion of this workforce could serve at the frontline of primary care—addressing existing gaps and strengthening healthcare delivery across the country.

AFPI, the leading academic body for family physicians in India, has been advocating for skill-based training and professional development in primary care. The organization is spearheading a national movement to integrate family medicine into mainstream healthcare, aiming to revive the traditional family doctor model through structured education and reform.

Speaking about the event, Dr. Sowmya B Ramesh, President of AFPI Karnataka, said that the conference will bring together over 300 participants, including healthcare professionals from the public and private sectors, medical students, interns, and policymakers. The conference will serve as a platform to discuss innovations in primary care practice, strengthen inter-professional collaboration, and explore models to enhance quality and access in healthcare delivery.

Padma Shri awardee and Member of Parliament Dr. C. N. Manjunath will inaugurate the event at 12 noon on August 3 at Lecture Hall 1, Golden Jubilee Block, St. John’s Medical College. Also in attendance will be Col. Dr. Mohan Kubendra, National President of AFPI, and Dr. Raman Kumar, Founding President of AFPI.

The conference theme, “At Every Stage, At Every Age – Family Medicine Transforming Women and Child Health,” underscores the vital role of family medicine in ensuring equitable, lifelong care for individuals and communities alike.

“AFPICON 2025 is an invitation to re-center healthcare around people, families, and the community.”

Apollo Cancer Centres Launch ‘End-O Check’ for Early Detection of Gynecologic Cancers

Initiative Targets Women Aged 45+ with Risk Assessments, Imaging, and Symptom-Based Screening

Bengaluru, July 30, 2025 — In a significant step towards enhancing preventive care for women, Apollo Cancer Centres (ACCs) have introduced End-O Check, an early screening and diagnosis program specifically aimed at detecting endometrial and ovarian cancers in their initial stages. The initiative primarily targets women aged 45 and above, with a particular focus on postmenopausal individuals.

The program offers a combination of risk-based evaluations, diagnostic testing, and symptom analysis to identify two of the most commonly occurring gynecological cancers—endometrial and ovarian—at a stage when treatment is more effective.

Ovarian Cancer Often Diagnosed Too Late

Ovarian cancer, often known as the “silent killer,” typically affects women between the ages of 55 and 64, with the average age of diagnosis being 63. When identified early, the five-year survival rate exceeds 90%, underscoring the critical importance of timely screening.

Cancer Burden on the Rise in India

India is expected to see its total cancer cases rise to 1.52 million by 2025. Among these, ovarian and uterine cancers remain in the top five most common cancers affecting women. Current data estimates the age-standardized incidence rate at 45 per 100,000 for ovarian cancer and 25 per 100,000 for endometrial cancer. Experts attribute this growing trend to changes in reproductive behavior, increasing urbanization, and a rise in lifestyle-related and metabolic disorders.

Delayed Reporting Leads to Poorer Outcomes

While endometrial cancer often presents with warning signs such as abnormal bleeding or unusual discharge, many women fail to seek medical attention promptly. This results in delayed diagnosis and reduced survival rates. End-O Check aims to address this gap through public awareness and early intervention.

Experts Emphasize Timely Detection

At the launch, Mr. Dinesh Madhavan, President, Group Oncology & International, Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Ltd., stated, “Early detection remains our strongest ally in improving survival and quality of life. End-O Check marks a proactive shift towards screening and prevention, enabling prompt diagnosis and precision treatment.”

Dr. Rani Bhat, Senior Consultant – Gynae Oncology, Apollo Cancer Centre, Bengaluru, noted, “We are witnessing a steady rise in endometrial cancer cases. Early detection significantly improves prognosis, with global survival rates for localized disease around 96%. However, delayed diagnosis leads to poor outcomes. Factors like obesity, diabetes, early menstruation, late menopause, and PCOS are contributing to rising incidence rates in India.”

Dr. Aruna R Patil, Senior Consultant and Head – Radiology Department, Apollo Cancer Centre, Bengaluru, added, “Radiology plays a vital role in early cancer detection. Through End-O Check, we are implementing transvaginal ultrasonography (TVS) to detect subtle abnormalities in the uterus and ovaries, allowing for earlier intervention and better patient outcomes.”

A Step Toward Empowering Women’s Health

By promoting early screening and symptom awareness, End-O Check empowers women to take a proactive role in managing their gynecologic health. Apollo Cancer Centres aim to significantly reduce late-stage cancer diagnoses and improve survival rates among Indian women through this initiative.
