Spinal TB can lead to paralysis of legs and lower parts of the body;early diagnosis essential for better outcome, say doctors of Vikram Hospital

* Of all the patients suffering from TB, one to two percent suffer from TB of the skeletal system, with TB of the spine accounting for more than half the number of cases

* Incidence of TB,including spinal TB, is intricately linked to poverty

BENGALURU/June 20, 2019: India hosts about one-fifth of the total world population of tuberculosis patients, with nearly 6 million cases of the disease existing in the country.Of all the TB patients, one to two percent suffer from TB of the skeletal system, with TB of the spine accounting for more than half the number of cases of skeletal TB.Paralysis of the leg and lower parts of the body are the most devastating complications of spinal TB (also called Pott’s Spine). The patient may get bed-ridden, with all the negative consequences for the family such as unemployment and high financial burden of treatment.

SaidDr. Amrithlal A Mascarenhas, Consultant Spine Surgery, Vikram Hospital, Bengaluru: “TB kills 1.6 million people worldwide. This disease cannot be eradicated from India till poverty remains. As long as there is poverty, there will be illiteracy, malnutrition, over-crowding, drug abuse, HIV infections alcoholism, etc. All these factors are inter-related and lead to spread of TB. Diabetes, immunosuppressive treatment and genetic susceptibility are other risk factors. Spinal TB can affect both male and female, and any agegroup – children, adolescents, adults, elderly. Young adults and females in the reproductive age group are more susceptible to TB.

“Talking about the symptoms of spinal TB, Dr. Amrithlal A Mascarenhas said: “In the active stage of the disease, patients suffer from malaise, loss of weight, loss of appetite, night sweats and evening rise of body temperature. The spine become stiffand painful on movernent, with localized deformity. There are persistent muscle spasms around the affected vertebrae. These vertebrae relax during sleep, permitting movement between the inflamed surfaces, resulting in typical night cries of the patient. Spinal TB may also be associated with neurologic problemscaused by compression of the spinal cord.

“Said Dr. Vasunethra Kasaragod, Consultant Chest Physician, Vikram Hospital, Bengaluru: “In patients with spinal TB, anti-TB treatment should be started as early as possible. In patients with established complications of spinal tuberculosis, surgery may also be required. Thetreatment varies between conservative management with drugs to surgical management, or a combination of both, depending upon the severity of the disease.

“Dr. Vasunethra Kasaragod added: “Using multidrug therapy, the recurrence rate for skeletal TB is about 2 percent, although the relapse rate was much higher when treatment used to be given using a single drug. Long-term multidrug anti-TB treatment helps reducethe relapse rate of spinal TB. Effective medical and surgical management of spinal TB has improved outcome of patients significantly even in the presence of neurologic deficits and spinal deformities. Neurologic complications due to spinal TB can be relatively benign if early medical and surgical management is done. Younger age of the patient and radical surgery, along with anti-TB chemotherapy, can drastically improve the outcome.

” Talking about the various challenges in treatment of spinal TB, Dr. Amrithlal A Mascarenhas, Consultant Spine Surgery, Vikram Hospital, Bengaluru, said: “Accurate clinical diagnosis of spinal TB is often difficult as symptoms may not be definitely pertaining to TB. Multi-drug resistant TB poses a higher challenge to treat spinal TB adequately. There is a high chance of drug defaulters and recurrence of the disease due to lack of compliance from patients. Majority of them are illiterate and from poor background, and patient counselling may not give doctors the expected response.

” Said Dr. Somesh Mittal, MD & CEO, Vikram Hospital, Bengaluru: “TB has devastating consequences for the patients, their families and the society as a whole. Spinal TB is very painful and can leave the patient immobile. Early diagnosis is the key. It is a disease borne out of poverty and poor living conditions. Luckily, India’s economic growth has accelerated since liberalization of the economy. With rising per capita income and improvement in general living standards of the people, the country will hopefully be able to drastically reduce the incidence of this disease in the next couple of decades.”

THE INDIAN PERFORMING RIGHT SOCIETY LIMITED vs ANTARDHWANI & ORS.

Bengaluru, 19th June 2019: The Hon’ble City Civil and Sessions Judge, Bengaluru on 31st May, 2019,granted an ad-interim injunctionin favour of The Indian Performing Rights Society Limited [“IPRS”] against an event organizer “Antardhwani” that conducts/organizes live orchestra events, etc. in relation to a music live event, “The Kings of Rhythm-2 Musical Programme”. The event was scheduled on 31st May, 2019 at Chowdiah Memorial Hall in Bengaluru. The event organizer subsequently paid the license fee as directed by the Hon’ble Court.

The matter came up before the City Civil and Sessions Judge, Bengaluru on 30th May, 2019 wherein the Court was informed of the fact that IPRS being a registered Copyright Society, as per the Copyright Act 1957 is exclusively authorised to carry out the business of issuing or granting licenses in respect of any work in which copyright subsists. The Court was further made aware of the fact that Antardhwani had not responded to any of the legal notices or letters sent to them calling upon them not to perform/ allow to be performed and/or communicate to the public works belonging to IPRS’s repertoire without obtaining licenses from IPRS. The Court also noted that IPRS had informed Antardhwani about the requirement of a license from IPRS in view of assignment deeds executed in favour of IPRS. The fact that Antardhwani had previously obtained licenses from IPRS for events organized by them in the past was taken into account by the Court.

The performing line up for the live show “The Kings of Rhythm-2 Musical Programme” included Biju Nair and team performing songs of OP Nayyar and RD Burman. The Event was also advertised as a “Fiery tribute of RD Burman and OP Nayyar”. The Court held that IPRS had established a prima facie case to show rights in its favour. Also, as the Event was scheduled to be held on 31st May, 2019 itself the Court further noted that there would be no harm caused to the organizers and the venue of the event in case an ex parte order is passed and on the other hand if the event goes on without paying the license fee to IPRS, IPRS and its members would be put to a greater loss.

IPRS was re-registered as a Copyright Society in November 2017 under Section 33 of the Copyright Act, 1957 and is tasked with administering therights of 4000+ Author (lyricist),Music Composer and Music Publisher members across India. IPRS rights include musical works and associated lyrics in all major Indian languages and is the sole registered copyright society in India in respect of musical works and literary works associated with musical works.

IPRS has earlier also instituted a law suit against Telecom operator Vodafone before the Calcutta High Court where the Court directed Vodafone todeposit INR 2.5 Crores with the court registry.

Bengaluru is the first Indian city to feature in top-ten destinations for cross-border investors across Asia Pacific in 2019

* In 2017-18, the total real estate investment in Bengaluru was almost USD 800 million, this investment more than doubled annually in 2018-19

* Stronger interest in India is attributed to the launch of first Indian REITs and the resulting enhanced market transparency

New Delhi, 19 June 2019: CBRE South Asia Pvt. Ltd, India’s leading real estate consulting firm’s Asia Pacific Investor Intensions Survey 2019 findings revealed that Bengaluru – the capital city of Karnataka- for the first time has featured in the list of top ten destinations for cross-border investment across Asia Pacific. The survey revealed that India was among the top five preferred markets in APAC on the back of the launch of the first REIT (Embassy-Blackstone) and the resulting improved market transparency. The drivers for this trend were new infrastructure and potential growth opportunities in the market.

The first REIT by Embassy Group and Blackstone Group LP was launched in India in March this year and it is expected to catalyse investments in the country. Improved investor sentiment in office assets is likely to expose potential quality buildings as a fundraising avenue for developers and also propel major corporations to lease / purchase space in these developments.

Commenting on the findings of the survey Anshuman Magazine, Chairman and CEO, India, South East Asia, Middle East and Africa, CBRE said, “Bengaluru featured as the first Indian city in the list of preferred investment destination on the basis of its growing reputation across the globe as the home base to several international corporates. The city with a significant talent base and world-class infrastructure is also popular for offering several investment grade options in office, retail as well as residential segments.”

On the overall positioning of the Indian real estate market in APAC, he added, “A stronger interest in office properties followed by industrial & logistics, multifamily, hotels and retail were the preferred sectors of investment in APAC. There is significant scope for investment in India and the rising consumption and growing demand in the logistics sector, particularly, will continue to stimulate investors to seek opportunities in this market.”

Other key findings of the survey:
In almost all the geographies across APAC, the lack of investible stock for sale remains a major challenge for investors. The acquisition of numerous institutional-grade properties by long term buyers in recent years has constrained the availability of assets in developed markets, particularly Singapore, Hong Kong and Japan.

Despite the risk factors at the forefront of investors’ concerns, buyers continue to seek higher returns and are focused on value-added and opportunistic deals in the emerging markets such as India. This rising interest has propelled Bengaluru into the top ten destinations for cross-border investors for the first time since the survey began in 2014.

More investors in APAC are considering lending against assets rather than taking equity

positions as loan to value ratios tighten and banks adopt a more conservative attitude towards real estate financing. Other niche sectors attracting investor interest in APAC include retirement living, supported by ageing populations in Asia; data centres, driven by the increasing use of cloud computing; and healthcare, underpinned by demographic change and the emerging focus on wellness.

Some key facts about Bengaluru:
Bengaluru is considered as one of the fastest growing cities in India with the presence of important players from the areas of information technology, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, manufacturing and other sectors. In the past two decades, it has transformed from being a ‘Pensioners’ Paradise’ to India’s ‘Silicon Valley’ and has become the hub of research and innovation.

Known as one of the key investment destinations in the country, Karnataka’s Ease of Doing Business ranking was eighth across India in 2017, ahead of Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu.
On the Social Progress Index 2017, Karnataka ranked second after Delhi.
While Karnataka is the leading state in the machine tools industry, Bengaluru alone produced 60% of machine tools (in terms of value) in the country in 2018.
Bengaluru was ranked first on the ‘Best place to live and work’ list by Mercer in 2018.
In 2017-18, the total real estate investment in Bengaluru was almost USD 800 million, this investment more than doubled annually in 2018-19. Commercial assets were a prominent choice for investors.
Bengaluru ranked second on the Global Startup Ecosystem Growth Index by ‘Compass’ Infrastructure in 2018.
