Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi Addresses Abu Dhabi Interfaith Summit to Protect Children Online

Amma delivered the opening address of the Call to Action by Faith Leaders. Amma’s address spoke of the need for parents to be vigilant regarding their children’s online and offline lives, the importance of parents instilling spiritual values in their children, and of fostering relationships with their sons and daughters wherein they feel comfortable openly communicating with them.
Amma and the other 5 senior faith leaders were personally welcomed by His Highness Sheikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior of the United Arab Emirates
Amma was one of six senior faith leaders to participate in an Interfaith Summit in support of the Abu Dhabi Interfaith Declaration for Child Protection.

ABU DHABI / November 20, 2018: Children and adolescents comprise a quarter of the more than 3.2 billion Internet users worldwide, and these 800 million young users are increasingly in danger of falling victim to sexual abuse, predation, exploitation and harassment. According to a 2015 study by Microsoft, 720,000 images of child sexual abuse are uploaded to the Internet every day.

To help search for a global solution through discussions, building awareness and mobilising action for the better protection of minors online, spiritual leader and humanitarian Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi (Amma) participated in the Interfaith Alliance for Safer Communities’ first forum, “Child Dignity in the Digital World.” The forum took place in Abu Dhabi under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, with its Executive Committee headed by His Highness Sheikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior of the United Arab Emirates.

At the forum, Amma delivered the Opening Address as part of a Call to Action by Faith Leaders, and participated in the Faith Leaders Summit, held at the landmark memorial monument Wahat Al Karama, wherein she and five senior faith leaders pledged their support for the Abu Dhabi Interfaith Declaration for Child Protection.

Amma was also invited by His Highness Sheikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan to a dinner with the royal family at Louvre Abu Dhabi.

Amma’s address was based on her personal experience of having spoken directly with tens of thousands of victims of sexual exploitation and abuse all over the world during the past 30 years.

“The human mind is a mystery—a puzzle—where truth and untruth, gods and demons, good and bad are all mixed together.” Amma said. “One of the most deplorable, repulsive and dangerous afflictions in the human mind is the drive to sexually abuse and exploit another human being.”

Amma focused on the need for parents to be both vigilant about their children’s online and offline lives and to foster loving relationships with their children through which their sons and daughters can feel secure enough to have open-hearted communication with them about their troubles.

Amma also stressed the importance of parents inculcating spiritual values in their children in order to help them grow into healthy adults that have the self-control and compassion to always treat others with love and respect.

“If our laws and their enforcement were effective, then why is sexual exploitation continuing to increase at an alarming rate? Even though the United Nations, governments and social-welfare organisations are all working against this, why don’t we see an improvement? Knowingly or unknowingly, a key factor is being overlooked—spiritual values. Spiritual values are needed to develop a culture of the heart. A home should provide an environment that instils this culture right from childhood.”

Amma also spoke about the pros and cons of the Internet, social media and smartphones, explaining that, as with any new technology, tremendous care must taken with their use—something that Amma said currently is not being done.

“There is no doubt that modern technology is a blessing to humanity. But we also need to recognise that many hide their true face behind a mask created on social media, using a false identity intended to exploit others. In the past, people feared ghosts and evil spirits. Today, a much bigger problem has taken its place. People fear those living under the same roof—their spouse, siblings, family and friends. They wonder, ‘Are there hidden cameras in my house, or even in my bathroom?’ Now, even our own family members may not hesitate to sell our naked photographs on social media, making us victims of pornography.”

Amma added, “Digital technology and social media are powerful. We need to be extremely attentive and exercise restraint when using them. Otherwise, these blessings can become a cause of destruction. Especially, when we buy phones and tablets for children, strict parental supervision is a necessity. Parents should block certain Websites.”

The Forum was the first in what is planned to be a series aimed at encouraging a global, faith-based dialogue regarding the challenges that impact the safety and security of the world’s communities.

More than 450 faith leaders from all religions participated in the event. In addition to Amma, participating faith leaders included Professor Dr. Ahmad Al-Tayyeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar and the President of the Muslim Council of Elders; Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle, Archbishop of Manila; His Eminence Metropolitan Emmanuel, Exarch of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople of the Eastern Orthodox Church (on behalf of His Holiness Patriarch Bartholomew I); Rabbi Michael Schudrich, Chief Rabbi of Poland; Reverend Keishi Miyamoto, Leader of Myochikai; Bhai Sahib Bhai Dr. Mohinder Singh OBE KSG; Chairman, Guru Nanak Nishkam Sewak Jatha; in addition to number of other religious leaders. UN Nobel Peace Laureate Kailash Satyarthi; Marta Santos Pais, Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General on Violence Against Children; Maud de Boer-Buquicchio, UN Special Rapporteur on the Sale and Sexual Exploitation of Children also addressed the forum.

The Interfaith Alliance Forum was held in collaboration with a number of international organisations with expertise and global influence on interfaith and child protection, including Pontificia Universita, UNICEF, We Protect Global Alliance, Child Dignity in the Digital World, Arigatou International, Religions for Peace and End Violence Against Children.

The Interfaith Alliance for Safer Communities Forum is an expansion of the Child Dignity in the Digital World Congress, which was held in October 2017 in the Vatican, and resulted in the Rome Declaration endorsed by His Holiness Pope Francis. During the congress, the UAE was identified for its reputation for tolerance and was consulted with to host an international forum to highlight its commitment to developing interfaith dialogue. These efforts resulted in the formation of the Interfaith Alliance for Safer Communities, which will have its first event addressing the issue of child dignity online.

B2B Meeting and Nepal Presentation Program – November 2018, Bengaluru

Bengaluru, 19th Nov, 2018:

A B2B Meeting and Nepal Presentation Program was organized by Hotel Association Nepal (HAN) in association with Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) in Bengaluru, India with the objective of promoting tourism in Nepal. The objective was to bring together eminent personalities from tourism communities from both India and Nepal, especially to enhance business networks and find business opportunities in the field of tourism. Generous support was provided from the Hotel Association of India, Embassy of Nepal in Delhi and Nepal Airlines to make this event a success.

Keeping in mind the Government of Nepal’s announcement of ‘Visit Nepal Year 2020’ to garner global attention towards Nepal to foster tourism, the event addressed the vast competitiveness of the tourism and hospitality industry as well as the pressure to reinvent Nepal’s tourism industry and produce new experiences. Special emphasis was put on promoting Nepal’s many tourism attractions: its unique geography that provides an exceptionally rich diversity in flora and fauna; the country’s rich cultural heritage sites that include seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the Kathmandu valley and two World Heritage pioneering national parks in the Himalayas and the Terai; its establishment as a renowned Hinduism and Buddhism circuit consisting of two significant sites of worship,Pashupatinath Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha; and, its popularity as an ultimate adventure destination consisting of one of the world’s longest zip lines, white water rafting on some of the wildestmost spectacular rivers in the world and jungle safaris with the chance of experiencing unique wildlife encounters.
Furthermore, HAN shared how Lonely Planet, a leading source in global tourism, has ranked Kathmandu number 5 out of 10 in must visit destinations of 2018 and how the Nepal tourism community will continue striving to promote Nepalas a prime tourist destination.

With tourism being the prime mover of development, HAN stressed how the Indian Subcontinent should draft a unique model of cooperation according to the changed landscape of global tourism. While the governments of both countries have agreed to prioritize tourism and connectivity, HAN also underlined the importance of the private sector to capitalize on this opportunity to reap the colossal benefits that the industry has to offer. Nepal and India are neighboring countries that enjoy historical age-old relations; they are two countries that share several similarities yet have numerous differences. Thus, the reason being why HAN shared it decided to organize the event in Bengaluru, providing a platform for the two countries to come together bilaterally while opening up new windows of opportunities. The Association also mentioned how this would be substantially easier now that Nepal Airlines has added a direct flight to Bengaluru that operates three times a week.
