Lions Clubs International is the largest non- profit organization in the world. It is a matter of great pride that this esteemed institution has served the community and humanitarian needs for over 100 years. Lions District 317F Region V focuses its energies to improve the lives of people who are under privileged in and around our communities by delivering need based and meaningful community service activities. One such cause that as a region have taken up is to support the Autism community and promote inclusivity to people in the autism spectrum within our society. Autism, or autism spectrum disorder, refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviours, speech and non-verbal communication.
To that effect we organized a “Support for Autism Walkathon” on 10th November 2018 at Cubbon Park, Bangalore. Chief Guest of the day was Sri. PC Mohan, Member of Parliament. Guest of Honour Mr. Peter Chittaranjan- Deputy General Manager, National Insurance Co Ltd, First Vice District Governor B.S Ravindra, second Vice District Governor Deepak Suman, MCC H.K Giridhar, senior Lion leaders and lion members graced the occasion.
There was active participation from students with autism as well as the general student community to showcase solidarity in support of this noble cause. Many NGO’s, recognized schools, NSS students, volunteers etc. participated in the program making it a grand success.
Lion Kalyani Ganapathy, District Chairperson for Autism and differently abled for Lions District 317F, said that the treatment for autism is expensive and people hailing from under privileged families cannot afford the growing cost of treatment. It is therefore our humble efforts to increase awareness about Autism in Urban and Rural areas and by carrying out the walkathon we intend to help less privileged children suffering from Autism.
Lion Rajesh V K, the Region Chairperson of Lions District 317F, said that the support for Autism walkathon helps to show our communities the importance of raising awareness of autism and helping to create an inclusive society. The walkathon ended with a painting competition at Press club where all students of different age groups painted in the same hall to demonstrate support of inclusivity. The students unleashed their creative talents in the form of beautiful paintings making it a morning well spent.
Lion Sasha Kulothungan, Zone chairperson of Lions District 317F said this was a wonderful event to bring together all of the lions fraternity along with the general public and people in the autism spectrum to support autism awareness. She emphasised there is a need for the community to create an autism friendly environment around us so that we encourage individuals with autism to live fulfilled lives and foster the feeling to appreciate the unique gifts they can contribute towards the upliftment of our society.
