Bengaluru, March 9, 2025: Narayana Nethralaya organized the Sight Saver Run at Jarakabande Reserve Forest, Ramagondanahalli, to raise awareness about glaucoma, a leading cause of irreversible blindness. The event, held as part of Glaucoma Awareness Week (March 9-15, 2025), saw participation from over 300 runners, including medical professionals, fitness enthusiasts, and the general public.
The 5K and 10K runs, set against a scenic forest trail, were flagged off by international athlete and South Asian Games champion Arjun Devaiah. The event was also attended by Gp Capt S K Mittal VSM, CEO of Narayana Nethralaya, and RJ Pradeep from 92.7 Big FM, who joined the cause to emphasize the importance of early glaucoma detection.
“We are surrounded by so much information through social media and the internet, yet it’s shocking how little we know about glaucoma. It comes without pain or warning, stealing vision quietly. Events like these help educate people about the importance of routine eye check-ups,” said Arjun Devaiah.
Glaucoma, often called the “silent thief of sight,” progresses without symptoms and primarily affects peripheral vision. By the time it is detected, significant and irreversible vision loss may have already occurred. Those over 40 years of age, individuals with a family history of glaucoma, diabetes, hypertension, or high myopia, and chronic steroid users are at a higher risk.
The event winners in both men’s and women’s categories were awarded trophies and certificates, with participants expressing appreciation for the initiative. Adding an eco-friendly touch, Narayana Nethralaya also distributed saplings to runners and planted trees at the venue, reinforcing its commitment to both eye health and environmental sustainability.
“Glaucoma-related blindness is preventable with regular eye check-ups and early detection. At Narayana Nethralaya, we use advanced technology to improve diagnosis and treatment, ensuring better care for glaucoma patients. Today’s run isn’t just about saving sight—it’s also about giving back to the planet,” said Gp Capt S K Mittal VSM, CEO, Narayana Nethralaya.
The Sight Saver Run successfully combined health awareness with community action, encouraging people to take charge of their eye health while contributing to a greener future.
March marks the Mahasamadhis of two towering spiritual figures—Sri Sri Paramahansa Yogananda and his revered Guru, Sri Sri Swami Sri Yukteswar Giri—who continue to guide millions worldwide through their teachings on Kriya Yoga.
Sri Yukteswar Giri, the author of The Holy Science, entered Mahasamadhi on March 9, 1936. His globally renowned disciple, Paramahansa Yogananda, followed on March 7, 1952. Both spiritual masters, belonging to the Kriya Yoga lineage, are venerated for their ability to transcend physical existence, proving that a divine Guru does not need a body to continue guiding disciples.
Kriya Yoga, a practice detailed in Autobiography of a Yogi, is said to accelerate spiritual evolution. The science of Kriya was passed down from Krishna to Arjuna and later revived in this age by Mahavatar Babaji, who entrusted it to Lahiri Mahasaya, Sri Yukteswar Giri, and eventually to Yogananda.
Paramahansa Yogananda, who met his Guru in 1910, was trained from a young age to take Kriya Yoga to the world. He established the Yogoda Satsanga Society of India (YSS) in 1917 and later, fulfilling a divine prophecy, founded the Self-Realization Fellowship (SRF) in the United States in 1920. His mission brought the ancient wisdom of yoga to the West, where he gained widespread recognition.
Even in his passing, Yogananda’s life remained extraordinary. Eyewitness accounts state that his body showed no signs of decay even after 20 days, with mortuary officials describing his state as “a phenomenal immutability.” This, many believe, was further proof of his mastery over the forces of nature and time.
Today, 73 years after his Mahasamadhi, Paramahansa Yogananda’s teachings continue to be available through SRF and YSS, ensuring that seekers worldwide can still receive spiritual guidance. In his own words, “Those who have come to Self-Realization Fellowship or Yogoda Satsanga Society of India truly seeking inward spiritual help shall receive what they seek from God. Whether they come while I am in the body, or afterward.”
As devotees across the globe commemorate their Mahasamadhis, the message of these great Kriya Yoga Masters remains alive—guiding humanity on the path to self-realization.
