Annual eye screening crucial for diabetic patients to protect eyesight: Dr Agarwals Eye Hospital

Dr Agarwals Eye Hospital, Bengaluru, is providing free consultations for diabetic patients aged 50 and above until the end of the month.

Bengaluru, 14 November 2024: Around 101 million people are suffering from diabetes in the country and a large percentage of the individuals with diabetes are at risk of developing some form of diabetic eye disease, including diabetic retinopathy, cataracts, and glaucoma, post 10 years of their diagnosis. However, a vast portion of the diabetic population does not go for eye checkups because there is a lack of awareness on how diabetes can affect the eyes as much as it does the heart or kidney. These conditions can lead to vision loss if left untreated, said Dr Amod Nayak, Head Clinical Services, Dr Agarwals Eye Hospital, Whitefield, Bengaluru on World Diabetes Day.

Diabetic eye diseases, including diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular edema, vitreous haemorrhage, cataracts, glaucoma, and retinal detachment require regular eye screenings which is essential for early detection and to prevent irreversible damage. Diabetic retinopathy leads to abnormal growth of blood vessels in the eyes and affects vision by causing internal swelling/bleeding, blocking of fluids, damaging the retina and optic nerves, and even displacing the retina. But, diabetic retinopathy can remain free of symptoms initially, added Dr Nayak

While talking about effective management and treatment Dr Nayak said, Diabetic retinopathy can be diagnosed through a comprehensive eye examination of the retina and macula. Treatment of diabetic retinopathy includes laser surgery to seal leaking blood vessels, injection of medications into the eyes to decrease inflammation as well as certain abnormal growth factors, and surgical procedure to remove and replace the gel-like fluid in the back of the eye to repair a retinal detachment or vitreous haemorrhage. It is also essential for a diabetic patient to keep blood sugar levels within a healthy range to reduce the risks.

Given the theme of “Breaking Barriers, Bridging Gaps” of World Diabetes Day, 2024, which falls on November 14, Dr Agarwals Eye Hospital is organizing free consultations for diabetic patients who are 50 years or above till the month’s end. Dakhni Diaries proudly presents “Kurubkil – A Journey with the Kurubas,” an immersive three-day event that delves into the world of the Kurubas, one of the oldest pastoralist communities in the Deccan Plateau. This event aims to highlight the often overlooked voices of the Kurubas and foster broader discourse on pastoralism in the Deccan region, helping us understand ecological and societal importance of pastoralism.

Kurubkii is a celebration of the cultural richness of the Kuruba community. The immersive three days will feature a range of events, including workshops on weaving, felting, spinning, public talks, film screening on Deccan Pastoralism, folklores, musical performance, and a marketplace.

Senior Kuruba Shepherd Neelkant Mama ji, Renowned writer Kottiganahalli Ramaiah, folklore research scholar Chandrappa Sobati and Senior designer Gopikrishna will be part of the inauguration.

The team at Dakhnii Diaries has been working with Kurubas for the past few decades. This event is more than a mere display, it is a platform to introduce young artists, designers, conservationists, social workers to the Kuruba community’s craft, culture and conservational efforts.

12 am- “Tagarajogi Thalanagalu” book launch by Dr. Chandrappa Sobati. Chandrappa is a research scholar who has contributed notably to folklore studies in Karnataka through extensive research, study and documentation of folk art forms.

12:30 am – Photo walkthrough with a photo artist Dr. Vivek. M. Vivek is an editorial and documentary photographer, artist, and writer. His work is an exploration of the human condition, reflecting on our interconnectedness through a quotidian,existential lens.

50 children to get Lifelong Access to free Roche drug for SMA treatment

Bangalore, 14th November 2024: Care and Protection of Children Trust (CPCT), a leading NGO committed to alleviating the burden of rare diseases, today announced the launch of a groundbreaking financial assistance initiative aimed at supporting children diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). As part of this landmark program, 50 children up to the age of 16 years in Karnataka will receive lifelong free of cost access to Risdiplam, a revolutionary oral treatment for SMA.

CPCT has signed an agreement with Roche Pharma India to procure Risdiplam, the first and only drug approved by the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) for the treatment of SMA. Under CPCT’s Free Medicine Access Programme (F-Map), children will receive continuous care and access to treatment at Indira Gandhi Institute of Child Health (IGICH), Bengaluru.
