Bengaluru,March 13, 2023 – Studies show, 1 in 5 girls drop out of school every year in India due to lack of period education. Studies have also found that 7 in 10 mothers don’t know the biology of periods and consider it ‘dirty or impure’, often passing this to their daughters. With mothers being the first teachers of their children, it is important they educate their young daughters correctly about the natural process of periods and about using the right products.

To educate these mothers and to break the cycle of ignorance and misinformation, feminine-care brand Whisper, from the house of Procter & Gamble, has launched the fourth edition of its #KeepGirlsInSchool campaign. In a new film, titled, The Missing Chapter conceptualized by Leo Burnett, Whisper is reaching out to mothers, teaching them the biology of periods so that they, in turn, can educate their daughters on menstrual hygiene and using sanitary pads during their monthly cycles. In most parts of India, mothers themselves are unaware about the biological workings of their body during menstruation leaving 71% of the girls in India not aware about periods when they first get them. As a result, young girls have limited knowledge on how to manage their periods and prefer to stay home during period days every month.

Whisper launched its #KeepGirlsInSchool Campaign in the year 2020 to shed light on ‘Missing Girls’ from Indian schools every month. They continued with the thought-provoking campaign in 2021 highlighting, ‘Missing Future’ of girls who dropped out of schools during their periods. Most importantly, over the last 30 years, Whisper has been running its school and community programs where it has educated and given free pads to over 10 crore girls and to mothers.
In 2022, the brand brought to notice the ‘The Missing Chapter’ on periods in the school syllabi highlighting an important question – how long a Missing Chapter can be kept away from the Indian education system. Whisper also stepped up to its commitment of bringing period education to millions of girls who lost access to this education through the pandemic by stepping up the on-ground practice of building awareness about menstrual hygiene and period education.

Sanjeeth – An Accomplished Badminton Player and Inspirational Coach chalks an ambitious plan to scout raw talent from non-metros

Bengaluru, March 13, 2023: Bengaluru-based Sanjeeth S, an accomplished badminton player who had represented India at the international level and currently an inspirational coach, has drawn an ambitious plan to scout raw talent from Tier 2 and Tier 3 centers, coach them and become a feeder pipeline for emerging champions from the country.

Commenting on his plans, Sanjeeth, said, “Indian Badminton has come of age and the sport has become popular in urban centers, and following this many coaching centers have come up in metros. However, in non-metros, there is a paucity of organized coaching centers manned by certified coaches. It is this void, which I intend to fulfill and at the same time leverage the opportunity to scout raw talent in these centers.”

Further, he said, many coaching centers in non-metros have shown their willingness to partner with him. While they have created the infrastructure, they are finding it difficult to get certified coaches in shaping the budding talent, he pointed out. Against this backdrop, he opined he could play a catalytic role in meeting the unmet demand and the help emerging talent to get trained closer to their home.

Hailing from a small town Erode in Tamilnadu, Sanjeeth used to play in the streets owing to lack of proper courts. His natural talent, flair for the game, competitive spirit, and urge to win against all odds, even in a game on the street, soon became the talk of the town. It was pure happenstance that an indoor badminton court was constructed at the same time and he got an opportunity to hone his skills for the next few years there, before moving to Bengaluru looking for better infrastructure, coaches, and sparring partners. Now his vision is to make all this available in non-metros and expect it to provide a big momentum in bringing more talent to the center stage.

A certified coach, Sanjeeth, has had coaching stints as an Indian Junior Badminton team coach and Karnataka State Team coach. It may be noted that Sanjeeth in his Badminton playing days had represented India in the prestigious All England Championship in 2015 and 2016 and carved a name for himself by winning the bronze medal in the Bahrain International Challenge in 2015. He reached a career-high of 94 in the world rankings.

It may be noted that wards of Sanjeeth, in the last few years, have won multiple tournaments at the city, state, and national level including gold medals in All India ranking tournaments and podium finishes in Sub-Junior National Championship. A few went on to represent India e.g. in the Asian Badminton Championship, Dubai Junior International Series, and Cyprus Junior International.

Unsung heroes like Sanjeeth are the lifeblood of badminton in India. They feed the pipeline, and though not recognized or rewarded they continue to inspire the next generation of players and coaches and pursue their love for the game.

Bengaluru, 14 March 2023: Cepheid, a leading global molecular diagnostics company, today announced the launch of their first manufacturing unit in India at Mahadeva Kodigehalli, Bengaluru. The 77,000 square-foot facility will manufacture the company’s industry-leading Xpert® tuberculosis testing cartridges for India and other countries.  

The facility was inaugurated by Dr K. Sudhakar, Hon. Minister for Health & Family Welfare and Medical Education, Govt. of Karnataka, and Mr Laurent Bellon, Senior Vice President, Operations, Cepheid USA in the presence of Mr. Srinath Venkatesh, President, Danaher India and Mr. Ravikumar Venkataraman, Vice President, Danaher India Development Center.

The launch of the new manufacturing unit in India represents a significant milestone for Cepheid, as it strengthens the company’s commitment to providing accessible and high-quality molecular diagnostic solutions to health care providers and patients in the region. 

Speaking on the occasion, Dr K Sudhakar, Hon. Minister for Health & Family Welfare and Medical Education, Government of Karnataka, “I would like to congratulate and thank Cepheid for choosing Karnataka for setting up its first manufacturing facility in South Asia. The CBNAAT device manufacturing unit will also strengthen the Hon. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of making India Tuberculosis free by 2025.”

The Cepheid manufacturing project in India was initiated in 2018 to support the dynamic India market. In line with the Government of India’s “Make in India” policy, the local manufacturing of components will make Cepheid’s MTB kits more accessible while strengthening the broader molecular diagnostics production capabilities in the country.

Cepheid has almost 50,000 GeneXpert® Systems installed globally, including systems across 35 states and union territories in India.
