“India Must Move from Punishment to Justice: Dr. Sudhanshu Trivedi at MRU Youth Parliament”

Dr. Sudhanshu Trivedi Urges Justice-Oriented Reforms at Manav Rachna University Youth Parliament

Faridabad, October 1, 2025: Rajya Sabha Member and BJP National Spokesperson Dr. Sudhanshu Trivedi addressed the VidhiVaaD Youth Parliament organized by the School of Law at Manav Rachna University (MRU), calling on young Indians to actively contribute to debate, policymaking, and leadership. He described the youth as the “custodians of India’s democratic future.”

The Youth Parliament featured dynamic committee sessions, including a Lok Sabha debate on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025 and an All-India Political Party Meeting on India’s response to U.S. reciprocal tariffs. These deliberations provided students with exposure to the workings of governance, from strategic negotiation to policy drafting and legislative challenges. Participants took on the roles of parliamentarians, showcasing their skills in oratory, policy analysis, and leadership.

Delivering his keynote, Dr. Trivedi cited landmark rulings such as the S.R. Bommai case, noting that the Supreme Court had firmly established that a government’s legitimacy must be tested on the floor of the House, not through external mechanisms. He stressed that actions taken outside parliamentary processes undermine democratic integrity.

Highlighting India’s colonial legal inheritance, Dr. Trivedi observed that the Indian Penal Code was originally designed to impose control and punishment. “Modern India must move beyond punishment as the central aim and make justice the guiding principle,” he remarked, urging lawmakers to adapt inherited frameworks to contemporary democratic aspirations.

On judicial evolution, he pointed to cases involving land and hotel disputes, where consistent judgments across decades demonstrate the steady progression of Indian law. “Our legal system is not static; it adapts and evolves with time,” he emphasized.

Placing India in a global context, Dr. Trivedi noted that while Western nations and China face demographic challenges, India enjoys the rare advantage of being both the world’s largest democracy and its youngest major nation. “This demographic dividend is our greatest strength, but it is also a responsibility. We must move forward with confidence — guided by our past and committed to building a sustainable future,” he said.

Dr. Trivedi also highlighted India’s global achievements, including its rise to the ranks of the world’s top five economies, leadership in digital payments through UPI, now the largest platform worldwide, and its milestone as the first nation to land on the Moon’s south pole. “Our civilizational heritage and scientific excellence are not in conflict — they strengthen each other,” he observed.

Concluding his address, Dr. Trivedi praised the students’ participation, noting that the Youth Parliament format fosters critical thinking, democratic responsibility, and leadership skills. “India’s democracy has matured through challenges and judicial consistency. With the energy of our youth and the strength of our civilizational values, we are poised to shape a future that is just, confident, and sustainable,” he said.
