Prabha Khaitan Foundation presents the Kalam series, a virtual session with Yatindra Mishra the celebrated Hindi poet, editor, music and cinema scholar in conversation with Riddhima Doshi, president of Madhav Marbles & Granite Ltd and Ehsaas Women of Udaipur on 25th June, Friday at 4 PM.
Yatindra Mishra has three collections of poetry to his name – Yada Kada (1997), Ayodhya tatha anya Kavitayein (1999) and Dyodhi Par Alaap (2005) – besides which he has written a book on the classical singer Girija Devi called Girija and a book of conversations with the dancer Sonal Mansingh called Devpriya. He has also edited selections from the poetry of Agyeya, Jitna Tumhara Sach Hai (2011), the prose of Ashok Vajpeyi, Kis Bhogol Mei Kis Sapne Mei (2011), and the poetry of Gulzar, Yaar Julahe (2009). He is also the author of the book Sur Ki Baradari. In this session Yatindra Mishra will discuss his literary journey and works.

JUNE 16, 2021 / March 2, 2021: Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham – ranked the 4th Best Overall University in India in the 2020 National Institution Ranking Framework (NIRF) – has announced it will conduct Phase 3 of Amrita Entrance Examination (AEEE) 2021 for B.Tech admissions from 11th to 14th July. Candidates who attempted AEEE 2021 in Phase 1 and 2 also have the opportunity to improve their marks in Phase 3. Examination will be fully online with remote proctoring.
Foundation Program in Engineering & Career Counselling for Future Engineers
Amrita varsity’s Office of Admissions & Outreach would be conducting a series of sessions under the DISHA platform to educate all prospective engineering students about future possibilities in each B.Tech stream. Faculty from Amrita School of Engineering, Chennai, will be conducting “TechTalk” sessions on technologies of the future and how various engineering branches are synced with these.
This Foundation Programme is designed to ensure smoother transition from +2 to engineering stream, keeping in mind that no physical classes have been held for the +2 students since Feb 2020. The objective is to build a strong foundation of core fundamentals of science and technology among the engineering aspirants and relate it with technologies of the future and real-time applications. The Programme intends to create proper awareness among students and parents about various branches of engineering other than computer science. It is essential to educate future engineers about all the possibilities and job opportunities that will arise in the coming years with technological advancement.
Centralised Seat Allotment & Admissions
Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham will start the B.Tech Centralised Seat Allotment Process (CSAP) for 2021admissions in the first week of August. CSAP for the B.Tech programmes, offered at Amritapuri (Kerala), Bengaluru, Chennai and Coimbatore campuses of the varsity, will be fully online. Futuristic programmes like Automation & Robotics, Cyber Security and Artificial Intelligence are offered at all four of these campuses. Interested candidates can register for the CSAP by paying the registration fee. A minimum of three rounds of seat allotment will be conducted so that the candidates can exercise the sliding option.
50% seats are reserved with scholarship fees for top-ranked students.
Those who register for CSAP are allotted the branch most preferred by the candidate. Meritorious candidates will get the seats with scholarship fees. Candidates with good rank can avail the scholarship.
Placements
Amrita varsity also trains its students through the four-year B.Tech course in soft skills and encourages them to undergo various certification programmes. Around 90 to 95% of eligible Amrita students get placed every year. The average annual salary for students ranges from Rs 5 to 6 lakhs. The highest salary offered each year has consistently been above Rs 50 lakhs per annum. In the year 2020, the highest salary offered to an Amrita B.Tech student was Rs 56.95 lakhs per annum.
In a first, students can now qualify for admission to Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham’s engineering programmes by acing its international examination called Amrita Engineering Entrance Examination (AEEE), or any of the four eligibility exams including Remote Proctored Examination (CBT or RPE) or JEE Mains 2021 or SAT or Pearson UG Entrance Examination Score (PUEE). The varsity is adhering to the JEE Mains pattern for AEEE – Engineering 2021 Centre Based Test.
The eligibility for appearing in the AEEE test is 12th class or equivalent from a recognized board with not less than 55% in Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics separately, and an aggregate minimum of 60% in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Candidates seeking admission should be born on or after 1st July 2000.
Once a candidate clears any of the given eligibility examinations, an online counselling session will be conducted individually to discuss the prospective engineering programs available, based on the grade. Over 200 students from Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham get the opportunity to study abroad each year under various programs.

BENGALURU / June 16, 2021: The Sars-Cov-2 delta variant not only has a 40% higher transmission rate compared to the alpha variant (which in turn has a 50% higher transmissibility than the original strain of the virus), it also causes a much more severe disease than alpha. This is leading to further rise in the percentage of positive cases that require hospitalization, even though the infection is in younger people. The delta variant causes acute and severe immune suppression and an acute hyperglycemic state, predisposing individuals to the risk of opportunistic infections like mucormycosis (black fungus disease), according to doctors of Vikram Hospital, Bengaluru (a unit of Manipal Hospitals). About 400-500 patients have been detected with mucormycosis in Karnataka, due to which the disease has been declared an epidemic in the state.
Said Dr. Srinivas K, Consultant ENT, Head & Neck Surgeon, Vikram Hospital, Bengaluru (a unit of Manipal Hospitals): “Mucormycosis, or the Black fungus disease, is a rare and rapidly progressive disease with high mortality if not treated in time. It usually occurs in people who either have health conditions like untreated diabetes or are taking medicines that lower the body’s immunity. The infection is caused by a fungus called Mucormycetes which lives in our surrounding environment. Its transmission occurs by inhalation, inoculation or ingestion of the spores. There are probable theories about its spread such as fungus growing on the walls, negative pressure rooms, water leaks, poor air filtration, building construction activities, etc.”
Said Dr. Pramod V Satya, Consultant – Internal Medicine, Vikram Hospital, Bengaluru (a unit of Manipal Hospitals): “Black fungus is very much treatable if patients take medical help on time, with typical recovery time being three weeks in early stages of the disease. They need to undergo complete and repeated surgical removal of the infected tissue from the affected areas and take anti-fungal medication in the form of Amphotericin-B. Since this disease is rapidly progressive and potentially fatal, our advice to patients is to consult an ENT specialist in initial stages of their course of symptoms. This is because early diagnosis and prompt treatment leads to a better cure rate and faster recovery.”
Talking about the kind of people at risk of black fungus infection, Dr. Partha Pradeep Shetty, Consultant Nephrologist, Vikram Hospital, Bengaluru (a unit of Manipal Hospitals) added: “Individuals who suffer from diseases causing suppression of one’s immunity are at the risk of black fungus infection. Uncontrolled diabetes is one of the most important risk factors. Cancer patients, dialysis patients and those undergoing treatment with corticosteroids also have a higher risk. Other risk factors include patients facing trauma or burns and those who have undergone an organ or bone marrow transplantation. Patients should be especially cautious if they have had a previous Covid-19 infection and got treated with steroids or Remdesivir or were administered oxygen therapy.”
The major areas of the body affected by black fungus include the small hollow spaces in the bones around the nose (paranasal sinuses), the nasal cavity, the palate, the skull base and the back wall of the throat from where it can spread to the eyes and brain. Other probable areas for infection are skin, lungs and the gastro-intestinal tract. Symptoms include facial pain, puffiness or swelling, eye pain, puffiness around the eyes, blurring of vision or double vision associated with a blocked nose, headache, tooth pain or swelling over the palate.
Said Dr. Srinivas K: “At Vikram Hospital, we have been treating cases of mucormycosis affecting the sinuses, brain, palate or the eyes. Most patients who come early to us for treatment have nasal symptoms and associated headache. They do well with timely surgical and medical management. Some patients come late when the disease has spread to their eyes, brain or the palate. They require a more tedious and extensive treatment with extended hospital stay. We have been seeing cases of both single fungus as well as multi-fungus disease. The other fungi apart from black fungus that we are seeing in patients include Candida albicans, Aspergillus Niger and Aspergillus fumigates.”
Vikram hospital doctors recommend that patients of black fungus go for endoscopic surgery wherever possible. “There are many benefits of endoscopic surgery compared to open surgery. It is minimally invasive, helps preserves organs and enables complete clearance of the disease. It also does not lead to any facial deformation or functional deficit,” said Dr. Srinivas K.
