Fraudulent Property Tax Practices Uncovered at Chintamani Municipal Office

Chintamani, Chikkaballapur: Shocking allegations of fraudulent property tax collection practices have surfaced against the Chintamani Municipal Office, with reports of erratic and inflated tax demands from property owners. Social activist M.L. Anupama exposed the issue at a press conference held at the Press Club of Bangalore, calling for strict action against the officials involved.

According to documents presented at the press meet, property tax for a single property fluctuated drastically within a short span:

2023-2024: ₹30,575

June 24, 2024: ₹1,00,659 (more than 300% increase)

February 24, 2025: ₹2,33,528

March 3, 2025: ₹5,320

“This kind of arbitrary tax assessment is nothing but daylight robbery,” said M.L. Anupama. “It is a shame that digitalization, which was meant to bring transparency, is instead being misused to manipulate tax figures and exploit the public.”

The activist alleged that officials, under the leadership of the Municipal Commissioner, were systematically inflating property tax demands without justification. She demanded not just suspensions, which are often seen as temporary relief for corrupt officials, but immediate termination and legal action against those responsible.

The revelations have sparked public outrage, with citizens calling for a thorough government probe. Many have questioned whether the authorities will act against the guilty or shield them, as has been the case in other corruption scandals.

Meanwhile, experts suggest affected citizens can take legal action by filing complaints with the Karnataka government’s grievance redressal platform. Transparency advocates emphasize the need for an independent audit of the municipal office’s tax collection system to prevent further exploitation.

The matter has put the spotlight on governance failures and corruption at the municipal level, raising concerns over the accountability of local administrative bodies. Will the government take action, or will the culprits go unpunished? The coming days will tell.
