Indian Transgender Activist Dr. Akkai Padmashali Condemns Trump’s Anti-Transgender Policies in Open Letter

Bengaluru, India – Prominent transgender activist Dr. Akkai Padmashali, along with fellow gender rights advocates, has issued a scathing open letter to former U.S. President Donald Trump, denouncing his administration’s policies targeting transgender and non-binary individuals. The letter, signed by Dr. Padmashali, trans activist Ms. Rakshitha Mallikarjuna, and intersex rights advocate Ms. Abeda Begum, strongly criticizes Trump’s efforts to erase transgender identities, limit their rights, and roll back key protections.

Dr.Akkai Padmashali, a well-known voice for transgender rights in India, expressed deep concern over policies that redefine sex as strictly male or female based on biological attributes at birth, exclude transgender individuals from military service and sports, and eliminate federal funding for gender-affirming care. “Your policies represent a shocking assault on the basic rights of transgender individuals and establish a dangerous precedent for government-perpetrated discrimination worldwide,” the letter states.

The activists also condemned Trump’s rollback of Title IX protections, which previously ensured equal rights for transgender students in educational institutions. They argued that such actions push transgender individuals further into the margins of society, depriving them of dignity, legal protection, and basic healthcare.

“The LGBTQ+ community, especially transgender individuals, has long faced discrimination and systemic erasure. But we will not be silenced, nor will we be erased,” Dr. Akkai Padmashali asserted.

The letter also highlights the Trump administration’s removal of transgender history from official records, its dismantling of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs, and its broader attacks on LGBTQ+ rights. The activists urged global solidarity and resistance against such policies, vowing to support their “queer brothers and sisters in the U.S.” in fighting for justice, inclusion, and legal protections.

“Mr. Trump, history will not be kind to you for this,” the letter warns. “Our lives are not debatable, our rights are inalienable, and our existence is not yours to erase.”

The open letter has sparked discussions within activist circles, emphasizing the need for international pressure to protect transgender rights globally.
