Kenvue, IAP Bengaluru highlight science-backed care for children’s sensitive skin

Bengaluru: Emphasising the growing need for evidence-based skincare in children, Kenvue India, makers of Aveeno Baby, in collaboration with the Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP), Bengaluru Chapter, hosted the second edition of its global scientific initiative, ‘Oat Nature Lab’, in the city.

The programme brought together paediatricians, dermatologists and healthcare experts to deliberate on the rising incidence of sensitive skin conditions among children and the importance of early, structured intervention. Experts noted that conditions such as atopic dermatitis, eczema, xerosis and diaper dermatitis are increasingly common, with prevalence among Indian children estimated between 20% and 39%.
Medical professionals attributed the surge to factors such as rapid urbanisation, pollution and exposure to allergens, particularly in cities like Bengaluru. Despite this, preventive skincare in infants often remains overlooked.

The discussions focused on the role of gentle cleansing routines and consistent use of emollients, especially formulations containing colloidal oatmeal, lipids and ceramides, in restoring the skin barrier and reducing flare-ups.

Delivering the keynote, paediatric expert Dr A.R. Somashekar highlighted the urgent need for standardised, evidence-based care protocols. Neonatologist Dr R. Kishore Kumar spoke about advancements in understanding the baby skin barrier, while paediatrician Dr Vivin Abraham elaborated on clinical management of eczema and related conditions.

Dermatologist Dr Divya Sharma underlined the importance of early intervention and regular moisturisation to prevent worsening of symptoms. During the panel discussion, specialists also stressed the need to educate parents on appropriate skincare practices, including avoiding excessive bathing and using soap-free cleansing products.
Experts further pointed to an increase in allergy-linked skin conditions, warning of possible associations with gut and respiratory issues. They noted that early and consistent skincare, particularly with clinically proven ingredients like colloidal oatmeal, can significantly improve long-term outcomes and quality of life.

The event also showcased Kenvue’s latest India-first innovation, a soap-free cleansing bar developed specifically for newborn skin, and included interactive sessions for parents and caregivers.
Industry representatives reiterated their focus on bridging scientific research with everyday skincare practices, enabling parents to make informed choices for managing children’s sensitive skin.

The session also saw participation from parent influencers, who shared personal experiences and highlighted the importance of simple, consistent skincare routines.

With initiatives like ‘Oat Nature Lab’, stakeholders aim to strengthen awareness and promote science-backed approaches to paediatric skincare across the country.
