National Cancer Awareness Day: Experts Call for Increased Awareness of Lifesaving Stem Cell Transplants for Blood Cancer Patients

November 07, 2023: In India, the battle against blood cancer rages on, with an alarming statistic: someone gets diagnosed with this devastating disease every 5 minutes, resulting in over 100,000 incidences of it annually. Blood cancer continues to be a grave public health concern, characterized by its high prevalence and mortality rates. Leukemia stands as the most prevalent form of blood cancer in India, representing over half of all cases, while Lymphoma and Multiple Myeloma have seen a concerning uptick in incidence in recent years.
A beacon of hope, a stem cell transplant has emerged as a promising treatment option for those battling blood cancer and blood-related disorders. However, the harsh reality is that only a handful of affected individuals find a matching stem cell donor to undergo this lifesaving treatment. This National Cancer Awareness Day, experts from DKMS BMST Foundation India call for an increased awareness of blood stem cell donation and how important it is to register as a potential stem cell donor.
To successfully carry out a blood stem cell transplant, it is crucial to obtain blood stem cells from an HLA-matched (Human Leukocyte Antigen) donor. When blood stem cells are collected from a donor, they are infused into the patient via a transplant process. This infusion allows the stem cells to travel through the bloodstream and eventually find their way to the bone marrow, where they reside. These new blood stem cells increase in number and produce healthy blood cells, replacing the patient’s diseased cells.
Only 30% of patients diagnosed with blood cancer or a blood disorder find a matching donor within their family, while the remaining 70% of the patients rely on the generosity of voluntary, unrelated stem cell donors. Ethnicity plays a significant role in finding a matching donor. Thus, the need for people of Indian ethnicity to register as stem cell donors is eminent as lakhs of Indian patients await their lifesaving donors.

Patrick Paul, CEO of DKMS BMST Foundation India, stated, “Only 0.04% of Indians are registered as stem cell donors. This means the chances of Indian patients finding a matching unrelated donor are one in a million. This leaves thousands of them on a waitlist for years as they cannot find donors, mostly due to the lack of their ethnic representation on the worldwide stem cell donor database. To address this disparity and save more lives, it is crucial to register a larger number of potential stem cell donors from India. With a population of over 1.42 billion and a rising incidence of blood cancer, thalassemia, and aplastic anemia, the need for Indian stem cell donors has never been greater.”
To highlight the importance of stem cell donation in combating blood cancer, experts lay emphasis on the case of 12-year-old Shruti, who battled Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Her journey began with an unrelenting fever that baffled home remedies and local medical consultations. Rushed to a Chittor hospital, doctors prescribed a stem cell transplant as her lifeline. Facing financial hurdles, she sought treatment in Chennai, all while enduring chemotherapy and the loss of her hair. Today, she stands fully recovered, a testament to resilience and support from her stem cell donor.
To become a potential stem cell donor, one must be a healthy adult and a citizen of India between 18 and 55 years old. Take the first step to register as a blood stem cell donor by requesting your home swab kit at http://www.dkms-bmst.org/register

National Cancer Awareness Day

On National Cancer Awareness Day Dr Ashu shah – Chairperson of Asian health care Global Enterprise pvt ltd & founder of Ashu shah cancer Foundation Appealed GOI PM Shri Narendra Modi ji That
Government should take Stern action against the violators of food safety laws. The impact of food adulteration will be grave for the next generation.

Time and health are two precious assets that we don’t recognize and appreciate until they have been depleted.” – Dr Ashu Shah

India’s cancer burden to rise to 29.8 million in 2025: ICMR report

According to a report by the Indian Council for Medical Research on the ‘Burden of cancers in India’, seven cancers accounted for more than 40% of the total disease burden: lung (10.6%), breast (10.5%), oesophagus (5.8%), mouth (5.7%), stomach (5.2%), liver (4.6%) and cervix uteri (4.3%).

Dr Ashu shah said in her recent Awareness Talk at Shangri-La Bengaluru that Breast awareness can’t prevent breast cancer, but it may help you to better understand the normal changes that your breasts undergo and identify any unusual signs and symptoms. My advise to all young girls is do self check / examination of breast every month immediately after your monthly periods & for above 40 years can go for Annually memogram as I personally believe in Early detection. Dr Ashu shah said Early detection saves lives , Screening like Mammogram, Thermography helps you to detect lumps Early ,
Mammography saves lives and has reduced breast cancer Mortality rate by 40% & Thermography gives us accurate information of location of possible leision /Tumour
Early detection is hallmark to cure the disease Early detection is having best outcome of treatment results , incurring less physical, mental and financial suffering. Early detection of cancer can also reduce the chances of serious and more painful therapies that are needed in later stages.
The interpretation of mammography images for dense breasts is somewhat difficult to detect micro calcification in dense breast which is common in younger age group , dense breasts can make it difficult to detect or visualize cancerous cells in the breasts when mammograms are taken or may require other forms of imaging techniques Like THERMOGRAPHY

Dr Ashu Shah said increasing consumption of packaged food with harmful preservatives and junk food food could be contributory factors.”The increasing burden of cancer is quite worrisome. Earlier tobacco and alcohol consumption were considered the major reasons for cancer. Obesity, radiation from mobile phone towers, lack of physical activities or daily Exercise ,vegetables grown in toxic water like rivers near industries, adulteration in food, artificial colouring of food and vegetables also increase the risk of cancers”
Being obese increases your risk of breast cancer. Many people are not aware of overweight and cancers risk like smoking. Just like ‘no smoking ‘reduces the risk of many cancers, maintaining ‘healthy weight’prevents many cancers. Since nearly 25 to 30% of global population is going to be obese in few years, it needs strong public warning. The government must restrict unhealthy food ,processed food and diet sodas which can cause overweight. Obesity is new age smoking and a slow plague which can leads to many cancers and lifestyle diseases. Maintaining optimum weight must be our health mantra. We are moving away from natural food to processed food which contains certain preservatives which increase the risk of cancers & Sudden Heart Attacks

Dr Ashu shah said my Request is Our government of India & PM Shri .NarendraModi ji & Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya ji Minister of Health and Family Welfare and Chemicals and Fertilizers of India must be stricter in this regard. Stern action should be taken against the violators of food safety laws. The impact of food adulteration will be grave for the next generation. Adulterated food and the use of chemicals on foodstuffs are destroying our future generation. The People will frequently have to go to hospital. Their medical expenses will increase day by day which will cast a serious impact on the socio-economic conditions. So the entire nation is in a terrible risk due to food adulteration.Request our PM to take actions on this serious issue.
