Prof. Dr. S. Ramesh Babu, A Metallurgical Scientist (Ph.D. from IISc., Bangalore in 1985), purely as a hobby he has been pursuing setting records. He has set his first world record in 1993, and as of today he created 76 world records in various events, recognized by various Books of Records, such as LIMCA Book of Records, India Book of Records, Unique World Records, Assist World Records Research Foundation, Guinness Book of Records.he systematically and dedicatedly practiced hard for the last several days in 4 sessions per day, each lasting nearly 1 Hr, to achieve my 77th World record FASTEST TIME TO POCKET 100 CENTRE CUT CARROM PAWNS” without any bodys assistance. Today he has succeeded in his mission by Pocketing 100 Centre Cut carom Pawns in just 5 Min 47.56 Sec, with 86 % being he attempt pocketing. The overall average centre cut striking rate was a whopping 21 per minute! The record was set at his residence #201, Sadhane, 6th main, 6th cross, Tatanagar, Kodigehalli, Bangalore, on Wednesday, 12 Feb, 2020, at 8.30 A.M., to commemorate his 64th Birthday ( D.O.B. 12 Feb, 1957). Besides the advanced carom playing skills, the event required very high level of concentration, speed and accuracy to successfully pocket 100 carrom pawns through the tricky centre cuts. The feat had an additional feature of difficulty, since each of the 100 carrom pawns to be pocketed were to be picked and placed at the centre all by himself, apart from retrieving the striker after executing each stroke and bringing it back to the hitting base line. His best performance during the practice sessions was successfully pocketing 100 centre cut pawns in 6 Min. 28 Sec., with 94 % first attempt pocketing. Today he deliberately chose to achieve higher speed with some compromise on accuracy. It may be noted that he has already set 3 other world records in carrom WR16 : 24 Hrs Non-Stop Solo Carrom, WR19 : All 19 Pawns cleared in 39.61 Sec., and WR51 : 1000 straight Pawns pocketed in 28 Min.49 Sec.
The record was set following the standard norms set by the Books of Records for such feats, in the presence of media personnel and invited guests. Kadio brand digital display stop watch of 1/100th Sec accuracy, made in China and a mechanical counter were used for accurate timing and counting. All India Carrom Federation approved standard carom board, 5 pawn sets and a blue plastic striker weighing 15g were used for setting this inaugural world record.
