
The High Court has issued a notice to the state government and the Bar Association regarding the issue of providing 33% reservation for women candidates in the upcoming elections for office bearers of the Bangalore Bar Association.
Advocate Deeksha N. Amrutesh’s petition on this matter was presented before Justice Suraj Govindaraj. After considering the arguments by senior advocate Lakshmi Iyengar, representing the petitioner, the bench issued notices to the respondents, including the state government, the Cooperative Department, the Registrar of Cooperative Societies, the Joint Registrar, the Karnataka Bar Council, and the Bangalore Bar Association.
The tenure of the current office bearers of the Bangalore Bar Association concluded on December 19, 2024, with elections scheduled for January or February 2025. On December 23, the petitioners, including the Bangalore Bar Association, filed a petition against the respondents, seeking the implementation of a 33% reservation for women candidates in the elections for office bearers and executive committee members, in compliance with the Supreme Court’s directive.
