Young Woman with Cardiac Pacemaker Delivers Healthy Baby at SPARSH Hospital

Bengaluru: Doctors at SPARSH Hospital, Yeshwanthpur, successfully managed a high-risk pregnancy in a 21-year-old woman with congenital heart disease and a permanent cardiac pacemaker, enabling her to safely deliver a healthy baby boy through a planned Caesarean section.
The first-time mother had undergone corrective heart surgery during childhood and later received a pacemaker for a cardiac rhythm disorder. During pregnancy, doctors also detected large placental lacunae, putting her at increased risk of postpartum haemorrhage (PPH).
Given the complex cardiac and obstetric risks, a multidisciplinary team of specialists from Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Cardiology, Anaesthesia, Neonatology and Cardiac Technical Services closely monitored her and prepared a detailed delivery plan.
The Caesarean section was performed under spinal anaesthesia, with a dedicated pacemaker technician present throughout the procedure. During surgery, the patient developed postpartum haemorrhage due to the placental abnormality. The team promptly controlled the bleeding through medical and surgical measures, ensuring her stability.
The baby boy weighed 2.9 kg at birth, and both mother and baby remained stable. The mother recovered uneventfully and was discharged in good health with her newborn.
Dr. Spoorthy Chandrakanth, Visiting Consultant – Obstetrics & Gynaecology, SPARSH Hospital, said the case highlighted the importance of meticulous planning, continuous monitoring and coordinated multidisciplinary care when managing pregnancy in women with complex cardiac conditions.
The successful outcome underscores SPARSH Hospital’s capability in managing high-risk pregnancies involving cardiac conditions and obstetric emergencies through timely intervention and coordinated specialist care.
