Amazon’s Village-to-Vision Model Set to Impact 2 Lakh Women by 2025

BENGALURU, May 26, 2025 — In a significant push towards improving menstrual health and gender equality, Amazon India announced plans to reach 200,000 women and girls across India by 2025 through its ongoing menstrual hygiene and empowerment programs. The announcement was made at a community outreach event held at the Singahalli Community Center in Bengaluru.

The initiative, which currently operates in over 130 villages and 14 cities, has already reached more than 50,000 women and girls from underprivileged backgrounds. Through local manufacturing units, education sessions, and community engagement, the program focuses on addressing period poverty, eliminating stigma, and promoting sustainable livelihood opportunities.

At the core of the effort are Amazon’s Gram Mitr and Pragati Mitr programs—grassroots outreach models where trained community ambassadors educate young girls and women on menstrual hygiene, debunk cultural myths, and create safe and supportive spaces for open dialogue.

“Menstruation is still cloaked in silence in many parts of India. Our initiative redefines empowerment by placing women at the center of innovation and enterprise,” said Dr. Karuna Shanker Pande, Vice President, Amazon Logistics, India. “This is not just about menstrual health—it’s about creating pathways to economic independence and community leadership.”

Amazon currently runs four sanitary pad manufacturing units in Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Kolkata. These women-led units, supported by NGOs Vyomini and She and We, use fully automated machinery to produce 1,200 biodegradable pads per hour. All products are made using CPCB-approved, eco-friendly materials, addressing both menstrual hygiene and environmental sustainability.

The program has also begun empowering women economically. To date, 60 women have been employed directly, while another 200 serve as community sales representatives. These women, many of whom balance household responsibilities, are earning up to ₹17,000 per month through flexible work. Training modules provided include financial literacy, machine operations, health education, and marketing.

In addition, the initiative has helped install vending machines and incinerators in over 50 schools and mobilized 243 community champions to engage in door-to-door awareness campaigns. By 2027, Amazon aims to support more than 500 women entrepreneurs under this initiative.

With India still grappling with deep-rooted taboos around menstruation and lack of access to sanitary products, Amazon’s intervention offers a replicable model that bridges the gap between public health, women’s empowerment, and rural development.

India Reports Surge in Pre-Leukaemic Condition Amid Ageing Demographic

BENGALURU, May 26, 2025 — A gradual but consistent uptick in cases of Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS), a pre-leukaemic hematologic disorder, is being observed across India, primarily due to an ageing population, according to leading oncologists. MDS is a cluster of bone marrow-related anomalies wherein the body produces malfunctioning or immature blood cells, often leading to fatigue, susceptibility to infections, and excessive bruising or bleeding.

Ahead of World Blood Cancer Day, Dr. Radheshyam Naik, noted Hematologist and Medical Oncologist at Sammprada Multi-speciality Hospital, Bengaluru, stated: “MDS is fundamentally a genetic alteration in blood-forming cells. With India’s median age rising, we are registering more such diagnoses. Lifestyle factors like increased tobacco use are aggravating the trend.”

He further noted that cancer survivors who previously underwent aggressive treatments—chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or hormone therapy—are now more prone to developing MDS and its aggressive form, Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML), as secondary malignancies. “While MDS is incurable, symptom control and progression delay are possible with current medical protocols,” he said.

Dr. Naik also raised concern about a marked rise in Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma (NHL), a malignancy of lymphatic tissue, affecting individuals across age brackets in India. “Though the precise etiology remains unidentified, the surge is significant,” he observed.

However, advancements in oncology offer new hope. “Innovations such as immunotherapy—including checkpoint inhibitors and CAR T-cell treatments—are revolutionizing care by empowering the immune system to combat malignant cells. Targeted therapies, like antibody-drug conjugates and hormone-based treatments, are delivering precision treatment with fewer side effects,” Dr. Naik explained.

He also highlighted promising developments in radiation oncology, including proton beam therapy and hyperthermia, as well as the life-saving role of bone marrow transplants.

India currently ranks third globally in blood cancer prevalence, accounting for 70,000 to 80,000 fatalities annually. The most common types include leukaemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma. Experts stress that early diagnosis via a Complete Blood Count (CBC) test is crucial to improving survival rates.

Erode: Vasan Eye Hospital in Erode has been revamped with modern infrastructure and advanced medical equipment, offering upgraded facilities for public healthcare. The newly renovated hospital was formally inaugurated in a special ceremony graced by Hon’ble Minister for Housing, Prohibition and Excise, Mr. S. Muthusamy, who lit the ceremonial lamp to mark the occasion.

The event witnessed the presence of Erode East MLA Mr. V. Chandrakumar, Erode Mayor Mrs. Nagarathinam Subramaniam, and Mr. S. Sivanandan, Secretary of Kongu Educational Institutions, along with other dignitaries.
