BioAsia 2021 Announces the Genome Valley Excellence Award to Bharat Biotech

Hyderabad, February 16, 2021: BioAsia, Asia’s largest annual global Biotechnology and Life Sciences forum organized by the Government of Telangana, has announced that the prestigious Genome Valley Excellence Award for the year 2021 will be bestowed upon Bharat Biotech International Limited for its breakthrough, pioneering research, development and commercialization of vaccines including COVAXIN™ (COVID-19 Vaccine), Rabies vaccine, Rotavirus vaccine, Japanese Encephalitis vaccine, Polio vaccine and Typhoid Conjugate vaccines, among others that have helped save billions of lives globally. Dr. Krishna M. Ella, Chairman & Managing Director, and Mrs. Suchitra Ella, Joint Managing Director, Bharat Biotech International will receive the award on February 22, 2021, during the inaugural event of BioAsia 2021.

Also, the Federation of Asian Biotech Associations (FABA), which is a partner organization of BioAsia has announced that the FABA Special Award will be bestowed upon Dr. Balram Bhargava for his exemplary contributions to medicine and healthcare. Dr. Balram Bhargava has been serving as the Secretary to Government of India, Department of Health Research, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare & Director-General, Indian Council of Medical Research since 2018. He has not only spearheaded the fight against COVID-19 in India but has also commenced several extraordinary marquee projects such as India-Stanford Biodesign programme, c-GMP Centre for Excellence for Stem Cell Studies, Society for Less Investigative

Medicine (SLIM) and many more. He has pioneered the development of indigenous low-cost coronary stents that have benefited several thousand patients.

FABA, which represents 20 Asian countries with a common interest in promoting human health through advances in Biotechnology, instituted the “FABA Special Award” in BioAsia 2010. Further, the Federation has announced that the award has been renamed as “Dr. B.S. Bajaj Memorial FABA award” in memory of the late Dr. B.S. Bajaj, who was a founding member of the Federation.

The principal industry hosts for BioAsia 2021 are Novartis and Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories. Further, the industry co-host for the event are Aurobindo, Hetero Biopharma and Laurus Labs.

ಸರ್ಕಾರ ಆಜ್ಞೆ ಸಂಖ್ಯೆ : ಎಸ್‌ಡಬ್ಲೂಡಿ 225 ಬಿಸಿಎ 2000 ದಿ: 30.03.2000 ಈ ಆಜ್ಞೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಮೂದಿಸಿರುವ 2ಎ ಪ್ರವರ್ಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಂಖ್ಯೆ : 8 ರಲ್ಲಿ ಸವಿತಾ ಸಮಾಜವನ್ನು ಸೇರಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ . ಪ್ರವರ್ಗ 2ಎ ರಲ್ಲಿ 102 ಜಾತಿಗಳನ್ನು ನಮೂದಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ . ಈ 102 ಜಾತಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸವಿತಾ ಸಮಾಜದವರು ಸರ್ಕಾರದ ಯಾವುದೇ ಸೌಲಭ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ಪಡೆಯಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯವಾಗುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ . ಸವಿತಾ ಸಮಾಜದಂತೆ ಇರುವ ಇತರೆ ಸಮಾಜಗಳಾದ ಮಡಿವಾಳ , ತಿಗಳ , ಕುಂಬಾರ ಹಾಗೂ ದೇವಾಡಿಗ ಈ ಜಾತಿಗಳ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಪ್ರವರ್ಗ-2ಎ ನಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಸಂಖ್ಯಾಶುಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಶೇ .1 ಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಕಡಿಮೆಯಿರುವ ಜಾತಿಗಳನ್ನು ಸೇರಿಸಿ ಪ್ರವರ್ಗ-2ಎ ನ ಪರಿಷ್ಕರಿಸಿ ಈ ಜಾತಿಗಳ ಸಮೂಹಕ್ಕೆ ಪ್ರವರ್ಗ-2ಎ ನಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಶೇ .15 ರಷ್ಟು ಇರುವ ಮೀಸಲಾತಿಯನ್ನು ಪ್ರವರ್ಗ-1ಕ್ಕೆ ಸೇರಿಸುವುದು ಅಥವಾ ಪ್ರವರ್ಗ-2 ನ್ನು ವಿಭಜಿಸಿ , ಪ್ರವರ್ಗ-2ಸಿ ಎಂದು ಪರಿಗಣಿಸಿ ಪ್ರತ್ಯೇಕ ಶೇ .5 ರಷ್ಟು ಮೀಸಲಾತಿ ನೀಡಬೇಕೆಂದು ಕೋರುತ್ತೇವೆ .

CMR University School of Legal Studies establishes Centre for Environmental Studies: Law and Policy

The CMR University School of Legal Studies in Bengaluru has established the Centre for Environmental Studies: Law and Policy to promote a sense of responsibility among students towards environmental protection and preservation. The Centre will focus on research into various aspects of environmental laws and policies in India and abroad.

Karnataka High Court Judge, Honourable Justice Siddappa Sunil Dutt Yadav, declared the Centre open through a virtual event. In his inaugural address, Justice Siddappa spoke about the role of courts in protecting the environment. While discussing the evolution of environmental jurisprudence, he referred to Stockholm Declaration, Bhopal Gas Tragedy and the Ramsar Convention, which led to a resolve to protect the environment.

Analysing the development of environmental jurisprudence in relation to the Water Act and the Constitution, Justice Yadav emphasised on the role of NGOs and environmental activists in further strengthening the laws. “Several decisions led to the development of principles like Intergenerational Equity, Polluter Pays Principle, Precautionary Principle, and Sustainable Development,” he added.

Well-known environmentalist A. N. Yellappa Reddy, in his remarks, referred to the recent disaster at Uttarakhand, and went on to analyse the history of the region and the relevance of Deodar trees to it. “These trees were recklessly cut by the British and this initiated the recurrent destructions at Uttarakhand. Communities were given the responsibility of protecting biodiversity of the regions they lived. In the process of development, governments have lost track of the environment,” he added.

The virtual ceremony was attended by other dignitaries Vijay Kumar Gogi, IFS, Prof. Dr. T. R. Subramanya, Dean, CMR University School of Legal Studies and Prof VJ Praneshwaran, Vice Principal of CMR University School of Legal Studies.

According to Prof Subramanya, the Centre will Inspire and educate students by providing hands on advocacy experience and direct exposure to the challenges of environmental law. “It will engage and collaborate with local communities and environmental groups. It will also advocate for reforms in environmental laws through scientifically sound and pragmatic legislative proposals among other things,” he asserted.

GINSERV selects 24 startups for GINCELERATOR 2.0 accelerator program; each startup to receive tooklkit worth INR 25 lakhs

Supports startups in Health, Medical and Education technologies; launches new initiatives – Virtual Incubation & Institutional Incubation Ecosystem

BENGALURU: GINSERV, India’s leading Technology Business Incubator (TBI) based out of Bengaluru, today announced the first cohort of 24 startups involved in product development in Health, Medical and Education-related technologies for its flagship GINCELERATOR program.

GINCELERATOR, GINSERV’s accelerator program has been designed with the support of National Science Technology Entrepreneurship Development Board (NSTEDB) and Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India. Each of the 24 startups will be eligible for Startup Kit worth INR 25 Lakh. As many as 100 startups had submitted applications of which 24 were selected based on various parameters.

Girish Hiremath, COO, GINSERV, said, “GINCELERATOR 2.0 is conceived to accelerate the growth and scale of Tech start-ups sustainably stronger and faster by providing access to mentors, industry experts, investors, and pilot access to potential customers. GINSERV being part the Mysuru-based JSS Group Institutions with its strong presence in Education, Medical and Healthcare space, can unlock huge opportunities for the Tech Start-ups form these sectors.”

GINSERV launched two new programs on the occasion – Virtual Incubation and Institutional Incubation Ecosystem. “Virtual incubation is the need of the hour. With work from home becoming a norm in the pandemic driven new normal, entrepreneurship has started to bloom in smaller cities, towns and in drawing rooms of innovators,” Hiremath pointed out.

Institutional incubation is about setting up a startup ecosystem in various technology institutions like engineering colleges. GINSERV is in advanced stage with technology institutes across Karnataka. According to Hiremath, non-metros like Belagavi, Hubballi-Dharwad and Mangaluru have the potential to develop into technology hubs.

Meena Nagaraj C N, Director, IT & BT, Science and Technology and Managing Director, KITS, Government of Karnataka, chief guest of the occasion, in her speech, elaborated on the new Special Incentives Scheme for Electronics System Design and Manufacturing (ESDM) sector to attract industries moving out from China. “Karnataka’s IT policy is focused on employment generation and Startups contribute significantly in this direction. The goal of new policy (2020-2025) is to boost IT penetration and innovation in the state holistically, both in Bangalore and beyond. Tier 2 and tier 3 cities will be covered under Beyond Bangalore plan,” she added.

Kapil Khandelwal, Managing Partner, Toro Finserve LLP, which is the sponsor to India Healthcare Opportunities Fund, and Director at EquNev Capital Pvt. Ltd, was instrumental in starting the Bangalore Angels and has invested and exited several startups in the healthcare space. As the keynote speaker, he said, “The National Digital Health Mission (NDHM) offers an immense opportunity. Digital healthcare can unlock US $200-250 billion in the next 10 years to the nation’s economic value. To realise this, health-tech investments of around 5% ($12.5 billion) is needed right away. The overall India digital health opportunity is valued at $50 billion.”

“We need to create thousands of ventures that can create the depth and width of healthcare apps for the next billion today,” Khandelwal added.
