World Sickle Cell Day 2022: Stem Cell Transplant the only curative treatment for Sickle cell Disease

Bangalore, June 16,2022 : There are as many as 2.5 million carrier of the gene (Hemoglobin AS) in India that can lead to sickle cell disease, with more than 1,25,000 actual patients spread across the country, with a much higher incidence in the tribal belt of the country. Sickle cell disease is associated with a significant risk of morbidity and premature mortality, especially among children. While in the west, a child receiving comprehensive care in high-resource settings has an estimated 99% survival into adulthood. However, in India, according to an ICMR study, about 20 per cent of children with sickle disease died by the age of two, and 30 per cent children with Sickle Cell Disease die before they reach adulthood.

Dr. Biju George, Professor & Head, Department of Haematology at CMC Vellore, “People with Sickle Cell Disease, may beat a risk of progressive organ damage, impaired quality of life, considerable morbidity in childhood, and risk of premature mortality in adulthood [median survival of 58 years]. Sickle Cell disease patients who are undergoing regular life-long blood transfusions, have the best chance of survival and cure with a blood stem cell transplant. This transplant can come from a sibling or a family member. However, there is only a 30% chance of finding a “matched” sibling donor in the same family. The remaining 70% patients look for a matching donor through a stem cell registry or donor center- a database of voluntary donors between the age group of 18 to 50 years.”

Dr. Govind Eriat Nair, Consultant Hematology Hemato-Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant Gleneagles Global BGS Hospital, Bengaluru, “If there is a fully HLA matched donor in the family, there is a 90-95% chance of cure with higher cure rates in younger children of below 12 years of age. However, due to underrepresentation of Indians in the global donor data pool, patients are unable to find a match on time. Also, the awareness about the disease is less, need of the hour is to raise the social awareness about this disease. Genetic counseling and newborn screening are the way forward. Effects of endogamy, consanguinity and role prenatal counseling needs to be addressed in primary screening.”

DKMS BMST Foundation India is a non-profit organization dedicated to the fight against blood cancer and other blood disorders, such as thalassemia and sickle cell disease. The organization aims to give every blood disorder patient in need a second chance at life.

To mark World Sickle Cell Day, Patrick Paul, CEO, DKMS BMST Foundation India said, “Sickle cell has variance and only the severe form needs a stem cell transplant. An early transplant can help patient with severe Sickle cell disease from organ damage. With rising cases in India, it is the need of the hour that stem cell transplants are made available to more patients to save lives. But due to the misconceptions and lack of awareness about blood stem cell donation, Indians are highly underrepresented in the global donor pool. This situation can only be changed by recruiting many more potential blood stem cell donors from the Indian ethnicity.”

The success of a stem cell transplant depends of donor’s HLA (Human Leukocyte Antigen) matching the patient. The body’s immune system has proteins known as HLA to distinguish cells that belong to the body from those that do not. DKMS-BMST helps in unrelated donor transplant process which includes enrolling and counselling the donors, get their HLA typing done, facilitate search of the donors and later facilitate the blood stem cell collection and the transplant. So, far DKMS-BMST has registered over 60,000 potential donors and have helped 60 patients with second chance at life.

Register as a potential blood stem cell donor:

Healthy individuals between 18-50 years of age can register at: dkms-bmst.org/register

All it takes is five minutes of your time and a simple 3 step process:

Step 1: Visit the site, fill up an online form and you will receive a DIY swab kit at home.

Step 2: Once you receive the swab kit, fill out the consent form and take a tissue sample from the inside of your cheeks with 3 cotton swabs provided in the kit.

Step 3: Send back your swab sample in the pre-paid envelope provided.

DKMS laboratory will then analyze your tissue type and your details will be available in the global search for blood stem cell donors. If you do come up as a suitable donor, DKMS-BMST will get in touch with you straight away. Once you come up as a match, blood stem cells will be obtained from the bloodstream using a procedure called Peripheral Blood Stem Cell Collection, which is similar to a blood donation wherein only your stem cells are taken. This is a safe, non-surgical outpatient procedure.

After the successful launch of Happy Tummy in 2021 with India’s first Digestive Quotient Test, Aashirvaad atta with Multigrains aspires to increase awareness about the importance of digestive health with the introduction of Fibre Meter and My Meal Plan in 2022.

Aashirvaad Atta with Multigrains, the value-added atta variant from India’s No.1 packaged atta brand, Aashirvaad, had launched Fibre Meter & My Meal Plan on its flagship Happy Tummy website ahead of World Digestive Health Day on 29th May, 2022. The initiative was in line with the brand’s endeavour to amplify the awareness and importance of digestion and the role played by fibre in helping to maintain normal digestion. The brand had commissioned ‘A Survey on Digestive Health’ conducted by Momspresso in 2021 which indicated that 56% of Indian mothers surveyed think their family suffers from digestive health issues. Based on the insights from the survey, the brand had launched Happy Tummy website, http://happytummy.aashirvaad.com/, a platform that is aimed at educating consumers about digestion and introduced India’s first Digestive Quotient (DQ) test – a 2-minute questionnaire to know more about digestion.

Over the last year, this initiative has witnessed more than 12 lakh Indian consumers landing on the website with more than 3.3 lakh undertaking the DQ test. The website also houses content such as blogs and videos by experts in the field of nutrition as well as high fibre recipes. It also gives consumers the opportunity to book a consultation with a dietician. Taking the conversation about Happy Tummy a notch higher, the brand has now introduced–Fibre Meter and My Meal Plan. The Fibre Meter indicates whether an individual is meeting the recommended daily fibre allowance through their present diet. Subsequently, My Meal Plan gives a suggested diet plan that can help meet the dietary fibre requirements as given by the Indian Council of Medical Research Recommended Dietary Allowances based on the gender and age entered by the consumer, in their diet every day. Consumers can choose from suggested meal plans across different cuisines.

Speaking about this on-going initiative, Ganesh Kumar Sundararaman, SBU Chief Executive – Staples, Snacks and Meals, Foods Division, ITC Ltd. said, “Last year, it came as a revelation to us that 56% of Indian mothers surveyed as part of ‘A Survey on Digestive Health’ conducted by Momspresso think their family suffers from digestive health issues. Aashirvaad Atta with Multigrains is our high fibre atta, and is committed to educating, enabling, and empowering the consumers by providing information on digestion. In 2021, we launched the Digestive Quotient (DQ) test with the objective of raising awareness about digestion among consumers, which witnessed massive success. This has encouraged us to further our focus on this subject and we are now happy to have launched additional initiatives under the platform – Fibre Meter along with My Meal Plan.”

To bring consumer attention towards the significance of digestion, Aashirvaad Atta with Multigrains has activated communication across multiple mediums. Consumers can check out the Fibre Meter and get a free meal plan at, http://happytummy.aashirvaad.com/

With the alarming occurrences of huge water scarcity , drastic climate change , unbalanced ecology , melting of the ice and glaciers in scorching sunshine , breaking out of unknown epidemic and pandemics , earth’s days seem to be numbered . Therefore , afforestation with massive plantations across the villages , towns and cities , need to be carried out on a war footing with sincerity . Attention should be given to the preservation and restoration of older forests with new plantation . Senior intellectuals should organise training camps and workshops for the common peopleimparting training on preserving environment with reformation and strengthening of democratic system and processes in the country . Because today’s common citizens are resorting to strikes in demands for their rights but forgetting and ignoring their duties and responsibilities for the country.Country becomes weaker if everything is provided to the people as this will make them lazy and unproductive . Labour , education and efforts are the keys to the development of the country . Patriotism will prevail and continue with the future generations by organising the recitation of national anthem at places and inclusion of the same in the study books . Complete abolition of weapons of mass destruction and reconciliation and resolving border dispute between countries across the world with the intervention of the UNO are mostly needed . Ignoring the essentials of every faith , we have been blindly following mere traditions , rituals and becoming superstitious . In this process , we are ignoring our widowed family members from participating in marriages , sacred – thread ceremonies and other social acts and festivals . This is simply superstition , religious fundamentalism and a social blot . He clarifies and strongly states that involvement of widows in any auspicious works will never result in anything bad . They need to be brought to the mainstream . He reminds the people here that the history of Odisha and Karnataka is very old . He informed that today also Lord Shri Jagannath’s important part of costume ‘ Pata – dori ‘ is being brought from Karnataka . BOSCO Observes World Day against Child Labour

Bangalore Oniyavara Seva Coota (BOSCO), an NGO working with child labourers and children in distress will be observed ‘World Day against Child Labour’, in Bengaluru on the theme ‘Universal Social Protection to End Child Labour’, on June 12, 2022.  Speaking on the occasion, Mr A H Umesh, Dy. Labour Commissioner, Bengaluru said, “Eradication of child labour is the responsibility of each and every citizen. Awareness campaigns and rescue operations are essential components in combating child labour.”  Fr. Varghese Pallipuram, Executive Director, BOSCO Bengaluru, opined that the majority of the children who land in Bengaluru city from other states are coming in search of jobs. Mr Santhosh Hipparagi and Devaraj Asst. Labour Commissioners and Smt. Kokila Chandrashekar, Corporator, Chamarajpet Ward, Bengaluru spoke on the occasion.

The theme of the day calls for increased investment in social protection systems and schemes to protect children from child labour. The number of children in child labour has risen to 160 million worldwide – an increase of 8.4 million children in the last four years – with millions more at risk due to the impacts of COVID-19, according to a new report by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and UNICEF (June 10, 2021). According to official data, there are around 152 million children worldwide working as child labourers, out of which India accounts for close to 7.3 per cent of that number. India alone has 33 million child labourers. One in 10 child labourers worldwide is from India.

There are thousands of child labourers in various parts of Bengaluru. This year BOSCO has rescued a hundred and twenty-seven child labourers of whom twenty-two of them were under 14 years of age and placed them back home. It is a day to educate society about the importance of childhood and child rights, create awareness about child labour and invite the civil society to join hands to combat child labour.

Rallies would be organized in the Veerabhadranagar and Shivajinagar areas of Bengaluru. The public would be made aware of their responsibility to send children to school instead of pushing them into child labour. Distribution of pamphlets, shouting slogans and exhibiting placards would be done to disseminate the message.     Children from BOSCO will perform Street Play to create awareness to the public about Child Labor in Bengaluru at BMTC Bus Stand, Majestic, Satellite Bus Stand, KR Market, and Gandhinagar.
