More women in India dying from cervical cancer than in any other country

Yet, Bangalore is witnessing a decrease of 1.9 percent in incidence of cervical cancer every year, in contrast to breast cancer whose cases are rising rapidly among women, says Dr Vidya V Bhat, Fertility Specialist & Medical Director, RadhaKrishna Multispecialty Hospital

BENGALURU / January 22, 2021– More women in India die from cervical cancer than in any other country. The world sees just over 6 lakhs new cases of cervical cancer every year, out of which 96,900 are from India. Out of the 341,000 deaths occurring in the world every year due to cervical cancer, 60,000 are from India, said Dr. Vidya V Bhat, Fertility Specialist & Medical Director, RadhaKrishna Multispecialty Hospital, in a talk during the ongoing Cervical Cancer Prevention Week. About 90% of all cervical cancers are caused due to infection with the common human papillomavirus (HPV), she said.

Added Dr. Vidya V Bhat: “Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer of women in India after breast cancer. It is a disease that develops quite slowly and begins with a pre-cancerous condition known as dysplasia which is easily detected in a routine Pap smear and is 100% curable at this stage. However, by stage IV of the cancer, the chances of survival drop to below 20%. Hence early detection is essential.”

She said: “While the number of breast cancer cases has increased over the decade, the number of cervical cancer cases has reduced in India. In fact, cervical cancer cases fell from 28% to 14% in the last ten years due to several factors, including the introduction of a vaccine in India in 2008. In Bangalore, the incidence of cervical cancer is coming down by 1.9% every year. Yet, women should not lower their guard as any one of them above the age of 30 years can get cervical cancer. Those from lower socioeconomic status are especially at risk due to poor hygiene. Other risk factors include a family history of cervical cancer, women having more than three children, long-term use of birth control pills, having multiple sex partners, being sexually active at a young age, and smoking and obesity.”

Women should be alert to symptoms of cervical cancer such as bleeding that occurs between regular menstrual periods, abnormal vaginal bleeding or discharge, bleeding after sexual intercourse, bleeding after going through menopause, and menstrual periods that last longer and are heavier than before. Discomfort while urinating, pelvic pain, leg pain, weight loss, constant fatigue and a cervix that is fixed and lost its mobility or one that bleeds on touch, are other symptoms of cervical cancer, according to Dr. Vidya V Bhat.

Women can do many things to reduce the risk of cervical cancer, said Dr. Vidya V Bhat. This includes avoidance of factors such as early marriages, sex at a young age, polygamous relationships, smoking and giving birth to more than three children. Restriction in number of children and improvement of genital hygiene is also essential. It is important to undergo regular pap smear and HPV tests, and vaccinate women (three shots over six months) in their teen years or early twenties.

In Stage I, the cancer is confined to the cervix. In Stage II, it includes the cervix as well as the uterus. In Stage III, the cancer has moved beyond the cervix and uterus to the pelvic wall or the lower portion of the vagina. In Stage IV, it has spread to nearby organs such as the bladder or rectum, or other areas of the body like lungs, liver, or the bones. The rate of cure keeps dropping from almost 100 percent in Stage 1 to 40% in Stage 3 and below 20% in Stage 4.

76% women aware about self-examination of breast cancer, finds Neuberg Diagnostics’ survey

~ Lack of awareness related to ‘frequency’ and ‘best time’ for self-examination persists ~

Wednesday, October 28, 2020 : Neuberg Diagnostics – India’s fourth largest diagnostic chain– carried out a breast cancer awareness survey pertaining to self-breast examination, it’s importance and awareness on hereditary aspects of breast cancer. 70 percent of women are aware of the self-examination of breast cancer out of which 56 percent of women said that they do regular self-examination. However, 35 percent were not aware of when to start performing self-breast examination and 19 percent were unsure about what to do further if they noticed changes.
Dr. Anagha Zope, Breast Cancer Surgeon, Apollo Hospitals, Ahmedabad emphasized the need for women to start self-examination after 20 years of age and said that there is a need for women to be familiarized with their breast shape and size to detect subtle changes. While suggesting the signs women need to look for during self-breast examination, she said, “A lump in the breast or under the armpit, thickening or swelling of part of the breast, irritation on the breast skin, redness around the nipple area or breast, change in size or shape of a breast, breast pain, or blood discharge from the nipple area are some of the indicative symptoms of breast cancer.”

Dr Jayanti Thumsi, Lead Consultant – Breast Oncology, Apollo Hospitals, Bangalore recommended doing a self-examination one week after the period. She said, “The examination should be repeated at the same time every month because, during this window of the monthly cycle, the breasts are not very tender or lumpy. In the case of menopause, it is recommended to do self-examination on the same day every month.”

Dr. Arun Warrier, Medical Oncologist, Aster Medcity, Kochi emphasized the importance of getting clinically examined when you notice changes in your breast. He said, “Many women are now fearing going to the hospital due to the Corona pandemic, but it is important to catch breast cancer before it progresses. Early detection leads to better survival.”
Discussions amongst families about medical illnesses were far and few according to survey results as more than 50 percent were unaware regarding their family history.

Dr. Udhaya Kotecha, Clinical Geneticist, Neuberg Diagnostics said, “5-10 percent of patients have breast cancer due to a change (variation) in genes associated with Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer syndrome. Identifying the underlying genetic variation helps assess risk for cancers in other organs and allows informed decision-making regarding risk reduction in surgery.”

Aishwarya Vasudevan, Group Chief Operating Officer, Neuberg Diagnostics said “In recent years, there has been a spike in the number of breast cancer incidences in India. Hormonal imbalances, child-bearing age preferences, and lifestyle changes are key factors in high incidences. Early detection can improve the chances of breast cancer survival. However, early detection can only happen when an individual is aware of what to look out for!”

She added, “We found that women are becoming more aware of the self-examination, however about 35 percent are still unaware about the next steps. The only possible solution to this is seeking medical guidance which can support early diagnosis, and access to more effective treatment. This will also help in reducing the number of post-breast cancer survivals in India which is reported at 60% for Indian women, as compared to 80% in the U.S”
Remember, “The best protection is Early detection” Aishwarya says.

In this survey, more than 400 respondents from about 100 Indian cities including Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Kochi and Hyderabad had participated. The age group of respondents was 18 and above.

LIFESTYLE TIPS FOR CANCER PREVENTION

Dr. Baswant Rao Malipatil, Consultant – Medical Oncology. Columbia Asia Hospital Sarjapur Road

It goes out without saying that cancer is one of the most dreaded disease. It is one of the leading causes of death worldwide and is closely correlated with lifestyle factors like tobacco consumption, harmful alcohol use, sedentary lifestyle, unhealthy diet and obesity.

Instead of just waiting and living with the fear of getting cancer, you can do a lot to protect yourself from this disease. Screening tests can help detect cancer in the earliest stages. Some cancer risk factors like genetics and environment are out of our control but lifetime risk of cancer could be prevented through changes in lifestyle. Avoiding cigarettes, limiting consumption of alcohol, reaching a healthy weight and exercising regularly are all great steps for preventing cancer. If there is a history of cancer in the family, making small changes to diet and behaviors now can make a big difference to your long-term health.

Here are some general lifestyle tips to help reduce your cancer risk.

TIP #1: AVOID PROCESSED FOODS, OPT FOR HEALTHY GREENS
The wrong diet is linked to cancers of the lung, stomach, colon, oropharynx, oesophagus and mouth. Studies have shown that processed meats, preservative- laden foods and food items that have been injected with chemicals can increase the risk for cancer. A balanced diet with adequate fruits, nuts, legumes and vegetables will help reduce the risk for cancer.

TIP #2: AVOID TOBACCO USAGE
Tobacco is the leading cause of lung cancer. Cigarette smoke is laden with cancer causing chemicals that damage the lungs. Many people think that by avoiding cigarettes and instead opting for hookahs, pipes, beedis or cigars they are safe but all of these are equally bad for the health and can cause cancer Avoiding tobacco is an important part of cancer prevention. If you need help in quitting tobacco, consult doctor for stop-smoking products and other strategies for quitting.

TIP #3: AVOID ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION
Alcohol drinking has been linked to various cancers of the digestive system including the mouth, throat, voice box, colon, liver and rectum. Excessive alcohol consumption causes damage to the cells, and this is more prominently noticed in cases of mouth and throat cancers. Excess alcohol can also disrupt hormonal levels in the body. It is okay to have it in very small quantities but better to avoid it altogether.

TIP #4: MAINTAIN A HEALTHY WEIGHT WITH EXERCISE
Obesity is one of the factors that increase the risk for cancer. Excessive fat in the body interferes with the healthy, regular functioning of the body. When there is excessive fat in the system, hormonal levels are imbalanced, insulin levels are affected and there is increased inflammation in the body. Regular exercise strengthens the immune and improves the body’s ability to stay healthy.

TIP #5: RESTRICT EXPOSURE TO HARSH SUNLIGHT
Exposure to sunlight is crucial for the absorption of Vitamin D however between the time period of 10 A.M to 4 P.M, the sun’s rays could do more damage than harm. During this period, the sun’s UV rays are very strong which increase the risk of skin cancer. If you must go out, wear protective clothing like hats/sunglasses/full length outfits.

TIP #6: AVOID RISKY BEHAVIOURS
Engaging in sexual practice with unknown or risky partners increases the chance for developing sexually transmitted disease like HIV or AIDS. This also increases the risk for cervical cancer, cancer of the genital organs, and anal cancer. Infected needles are also a source of transmission of disease – before allowing a needle to enter the body, one must ensure the needle is a fresh, unused and disinfected piece.

Simple lifestyle changes can make a difference. Consider these cancer-prevention tips. Along with this regular self-exams and screenings for various types of cancers can increase your chances of discovering cancer at an early stage, when treatment is most likely to be successful. Consult your doctor for the best cancer screening schedule for you.

As mankind advances, the threats to mankind find their dark pathways towards progress too. Cancer is such a disease that has advanced with technology, and in the present scenario, it has become more of a mental malady. The very first effect of this bad bug is seen on the patient’s mental health rather than physical. Hence looking after disease with team of Doctors ,Counsellors, & constant monitoring of emotional well-being of the patient is of paramount importance. And this was identified by Dr Ashu Shah. An Entrepreneur, Philanthropist,a Doctor & Director-Asian Pink Ribbon , in 2007 she started free medical camps in many orphanges & visited many orphanages like Swanthana Home for Cerbral palsy & Humanitarian Hands where service became her passion.

Working in an array of philanthropy projects for years, she took up the bigger responsibility in 2009 as a Board Trustee at MYshah Healthcare Trust and since then has supported the surgery cost for underprivileged cancer patients.
She said “The word Philanthropy is derived from greek word philanthropos meaning “Man Loving “. How much better world would be if we truly inculcated this notion of philanthropy into our lives. Giving Back to society & community enriches our Lives ,makes us physically& emotionaly strong more over if we involve our younger generation to Social services their demands from family also will become less.

Apart from cancer care she has extensively worked towards providing medical aid during the Kashmir flood as well as Chennai and Bangalore floods. She has been in the fore front during the latest pandemic that has hit the world by storm. Providing ration, masks, sanitizers, medical care and educating the masses about the care to be taken for COVID, she had been one of few who has been there head on Cancer patients , COVID 19 infected patients.

There are tons of myths doing the rounds and Dr Ashu, tirelessly works in educating everyone. As well all know that sanitizing our hands, wearing a mask and social distancing is paramount, Dr Ashu shah says people take it for granted.
According to her this should be the norm going forward too. She feels that in a situation like this, we need the help of Epidemiologist than bureaucrats taking decisions for
millions of citizens.

She strongly feels though we all live in a country ruled either by democracy, capitalism or communism, in the end the victory is only going to be of humanity. Being together, being one, we will fight this earlier than later and be stronger than ever before.
