Child Cancer Experts Stress on Early Identification of Symptoms for Better Outcomes

Over 50,000 children are afflicted by cancer every year in India

BENGALURU / February 14, 2024: The incidence of child cancer in India is approximately 38-124 per million children with over 50,000 children being diagnosed with the dreaded disease each year.  This incidence has been increasing over the last two-three decades. This was said by cancer experts of Sammprada Hospital, a leading cancer hospital in Bengaluru.

Said Dr.Intezar Mehdi, Consultant Paediatrics Oncology and Hematalogy, Sammprada Hospital, Bengaluru: “In majority of cancer cases in children, the exact cause is not known. In a few cases, genetic, environmental and infections may play a role. The good news is that paediatric cancers cure rates are much better than cancer in adults as the disease biology is different. In the West, 80-85% of child patients of cancer are fully cured. In India, cure rates have been improving in the last couple of decades. To increase outcomes, it is important that symptoms are recognized early, and treatment begins the earlier possible.”

Talking about the serious signs and symptoms of cancer in children that parents should not ignore, he said: “Generally signs and symptoms of childhood cancer are non-specific and subtle. High index of suspicion is the key to early diagnosis. Parents should watch out for unexplained fever, weight loss and night sweats, glands in the neck, armpit or groin, headaches, vomiting and seizures or neurological problems, swelling in the abdomen or chest and bone pains and swelling, and bleeding or pallor. These symptoms may be early warning signs of cancer in children.”

Leukemia, lymphomas and brain tumors are the most common cancers in children. Wilms tumor, neuroblastoma, bone tumors, soft tissue tumors, and liver and eye tumors are other common ones.

Dr.Suma ,Consultant Paediatrics Oncology, Sammprada Hospital, Bengaluru ,There is a wide care gap between the availability of services in rural areas compared to urban areas. This gap needs to be bridged. Government schemes for treatment of child cancer are essential. Better collaboration between government and the private sector, as well as between state, national and international agencies would go a long way in improving the situation for children with cancer in the country. Philanthropic NGOs can play a big role in ensuring treatment for thousand child patients each year.”

The successful pilot study on Low Dose Immunotherapya Nivolumab with NACT has demonstrated remarkable efficacy and is highly cost-effective, providing an economical therapy option without additional side effects.

The multicentric, open-labeled, prospective, randomized study assesses the effectiveness of neoadjuvant therapy combining low-dose immunotherapy Nivolumab and the TPF regimen (docetaxel, cisplatin, and 5-fluorouracil) compared to NACT with the TPF regimen alone. It has a potential role in improving the quality of life and longevity of patients with locally advanced carcinoma of the buccal mucosa.

As part of the pilot study, a total of 12 cases were studied between the age group of 54 to 76 years. All twelve patients experienced significant tumor reduction of over 90%, providing an economical and side effect-free therapy through low-dose immunotherapy. In the pilot study, standard neoadjuvant chemotherapy is combined with low-dose Nivolumab immunotherapy, administering 40 mg every two weeks, as opposed to the full dose of 3 mg per kg of body weight.

Speaking at the occasion, Dr. B S Ajaikumar, Executive Chairman of Healthcare Global Enterprises Limited, said, “HCG has been tirelessly striving to serve the larger cause of cancer care through a breakthrough innovation and value-based care. At HCG, head and neck cancer cases represent a significant portion of the caseload. Despite thea comprehensive approach, preventing the recurrence and spread of these cancers remains a significant challenge. This study has the potential to be a game-changer in the sphere of head and neck cancera treatment. The initiative reflects HCG’s commitment to advancing research and academia in India,a positioning the organization as a leader in this vital healthcare domain.”

The burden is exceptionally high in Asia, notably in India, where they make up nearly 35% of all cancer cases among individuals aged 40-60. We are enthusiastic about the potential benefits of combining low-dose immunotherapy with neoadjuvant chemotherapy in head and neck cancers. This study presents a cost-effective solution without compromising the quality of care. This approach not only delivers promising clinical results but also in a manner that is highly economical for patients.”

Research Grants Endowed with €240,000

DKMS supports Promising young scientists in advancing blood cancer therapy

August 3, 2023 – On August 1, 2023, the application period for the DKMS John Hansen Research Grant 2024 began. The DKMS Stiftung Leben Spenden supports up to four outstanding research projects in the field of stem cell transplantation or cell therapy each year. The grant is aimed at young scientists who have obtained a doctoral degree (PhD, MD or equivalent achievements) no more than 10 years ago. The grant amounts to €240,000 each and will be paid out over a period of three years. The application deadline is November 30, 2023.
DKMS is primarily known as the world’s largest stem cell donor center, with more than 11.5 million registered potential stem cell donors. However, the non-profit organization is also deeply involved in the medical and scientific field. “Every year, more than 1.2 million people around the world are diagnosed with blood cancer and, though a stem cell transplant can save the lives of many of them, not all patients are permanently cured afterwards,” explains Professor Dr. Marcel van den Brink, Chairman of the DKMS Medical Council. “Still, relapses and severe complications, most notably graft-versus-host disease, pose major challenges to medicine and science. We want to contribute to the continuous improvement of stem cell transplantation and other cellular therapies.” To this end, DKMS runs its own research projects and is committed to ensuring excellent research for the future. “It is a matter close to our heart and the DKMS John Hansen Research Grant enables talented young scientists to work on their promising projects for the benefit of patients worldwide.”
All information on the application modalities, as well as further details on the John Hansen Research Grant, are available on the DKMS Professionals’ Platform. If you have any questions, interested parties are also welcome to contact DKMS by email: grant@dkms.org.
DKMS – much more than a stem cell donor center
To date, DKMS has already given more than 105,000 blood cancer patients a second chance at life. In addition, the non-profit organization operates its own research unit in Dresden. With the DKMS Life Science Lab, it has the most powerful HLA typing laboratory in the world. DKMS research teams work on many different scientific studies around the topic of stem cell transplantation. One particularly successful example is the first DKMS clinical trial with practice-changing results. As a result of the trial, more patients worldwide may have access to transplantation in the future. If you would like to find out more about the scientific commitment of the non-profit organization, you will find detailed information on the DKMS Professionals’ Platform.
John A. Hansen – outstanding physician with a big heart
John A. Hansen, after whom the grant is named, was an outstanding oncologist and distinguished immunogeneticist at the renowned Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle. With his excellent achievements in the field of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, this dedicated and empathetic physician made a significant contribution to increasing the efficacy and safety of blood stem cell and bone marrow transplantations – and thus helped in giving countless patients a second chance at life. As a long-standing member of the board of the DKMS Stiftung Leben Spenden and a member of the DKMS Medical Council, he was deeply connected to the DKMS family.
