Space Biotechnology Start-up Launches India’s First Microgravity Experiment on International Space Station (ISS)

On November 2nd, at 9.59 ET India’s first microgravity experiment to be conducted on-board the International Space Station (ISS) was launched by an Indian startup called ASTROMEDA Space Pvt Ltd It was flown onthe NG-12 mission, in association with Space Tango Astromeda is India’s first biotech company to research and develop novel products in the unique microgravity environment of space.

Astromeda not only conducts in- house research and development but also ASTROMEDA provides a platform for researchers to develop significant biotech products in association with its partner organizations on the ISS. Astromeda provides reconfigurable experiment ecosystem designed to do various biological experiments using MicroGLabs In this mission, Astromeda is testing Anabaena bacteria which is a key element in Rice cultivation. Anaboena is a Cyanobacterium, and under optimal conditions, it can fix substantial amounts of N2 through BNF, and release as much as 70% of the fixed nitrogen to the rice crop. This experiment studies growth and genetic changes of Anabaena under simulated conditions in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) on the International Space Station for nitrogen fixation in hope for using it in future space agricultural endeavors. The payload will remain on International Space Station for three weeks. In parallel to this experiment, ground-based simulations of planetary environments are performed. This may help to identify genetic adaptations by the bacterium that could enable sustainable Rice cultivation in space. Rajaguru Nathan, founder and CEO of Astromeda space says, “our platform will create new capabilities to design and develop biotech products in space. Our experienced team will help to execute all microgravity experiment in space and near space environment”. “t was a great experience working in microgravity environment in contrast to our earth environment, it leads to million-dollar opportunities to research”, says mentor of the project Dr. Shashidar.

Gravity represents one of the most constant evolutionary drivers of life on Earth and understanding how organisms respond to the absence of this ever-present force not only provides information on how gravity has shaped life on Earth, but also provides key insight into potential mechanisms to mitigate the negative effects of microgravity during spaceflight. The large-scale physiological effects of microgravity on animals, plants and micro-organisms have been going on for a long period of time. Microgravity is the condition in which people or objects appear to be weightless. The effects of microgravity can be seen when astronauts and objects float in space The International Space Station (ISS) is a space station (habitable artificial satellite) in low Earth orbit. The ISS programme is a joint project between five participating space agencies: NASA (United States), Roscosmos (Russia), JAXA (Japan), ESA (Europe), and CSA (Canada). The ISS serves as a microgravity and space environment research laboratory in which crewmembers conduct experiments in biology, human biology, physics, astronomy, meteorology, and other fields.

The ISS provides a platform to conduct scientific research, with power, data, cooling, and crew available to support experiments. Small uncrewed spacecraft can also provide platforms for experiments, especially those involving zero gravity and exposure to space, but space stations offer a long-term environment where studies can be performed potentially for decades, combined with ready access by human researcher Astromeda Space Pvt Ltd is the young Indian Aerospace start up working in cutting edge areas of space medicine and microgravity research. Astromeda is the first Indian biotech and biomedical company to research and develop unique products designed for microgravity environment of microgravity in space. We offer customizable experimentation systems designed to do various biomedical experiments on board ISS and in the Stratosphere.
