Bangalore 07, 03, 2021: International Women’s Day symbolizes empowerment, equality and epitomizes women and their achievements globally.
ICycle in association with HDFC, initiated by Lion’s Club HSR, organized
“Samanathe” to celebrate equality on the eve of women’s day. The Cycle ride witnessed participation of 200 enthusiastic cyclists.
About 70 women spearheaded the Celebratory ride covering a campaign of 15 km.
Samanathe also had kids showing their energy on pedal, competing equally as everyone in the ride. The spirit of Gender Equality was embedded in each of our riders.
The succees of Samanathe was a true testimony to our recognition of women and the balance they carry by their very presence on our planet. Respect women. Embracing Inclusion in all that we do in ICycle.

Offsets 76,500 tonnes of carbon emission through renewable and clean energy in 2020
Bengaluru, February 19, 2021 – Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages (HCCB), one of India’s top FMCG companies, has ramped up its renewable & clean energy capacity to meet 50% of its energy requirements through these sources. The feat has enabled the company to offset 46,500 tonnes of carbon emission per annum with solar and wind energy and 30,000 tonnes of carbon emission per annum using bio-mass fuel in its boilers. The consolidated impact of using 50% renewable & clean energy by HCCB on the climate is thus equivalent to a reduction in global warming achieved by 35 lac trees per year. The milestone is in sync with the company’s plan to reduce its carbon emissions 25% by 2030 from a 2015 base year (science-based target).
HCCB’s total installed annual power generation from renewable sources in HCCB has now increased from around 70 million units in 2019 to the current level of around 95 million units.
Currently, around 8 out of 15 factories of HCCB uses nearly 50% of energy from renewable & clean sources.
HCCB has employed a variety of solutions to embrace renewable energy across its factories. Some of the key initiatives include conversion of furnace oil boiler to PNG (piped natural gas), use of briquettes – made out of agricultural waste like groundnuts and coconut shells – to power boilers, installation of solar rooftops for on-site power generation, entering into Purchase Power Agreement (PPA) for sourcing wind and solar power through various state grids, adoption of energy efficient technology and progressively replacing traditional bulbs and light sources in our factories with LED lights. Additional initiatives include adoption of Vapour Absorption Machine (VAM) for chilling operations operating on Briquette Steam and so on.
Reflecting on the achievement, Alok Sharma, Executive Director, Supply-Chain, HCCB said, “This is a significant milestone in our journey towards a sustainable future. At HCCB, we believe that investing in renewable energy is not just good for the planet, it’s a busines imperative as well. We are aware of our responsibility and excited about the potential that exists in our system to drive renewable energy into the manufacturing supply chain.”
The company in 2020 pressed 7 additional renewable energy projects into service during the pandemic. Installed in different factories of the company, these projects are designed to source 23.5 million units of power by way of Purchase Power Agreement (PPA) through various state grids.
The purpose of the Human Brain Project is to better understand brain function and develop solutions to cure brain diseases
The MoU was signed between Amrita and Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland for working together on the Project, in collaboration with University of Pavia in Italy and Aix-Marseille University in France
The development comes closely on the heels of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham launching the Amrita Mind Brain Center (AMBC) at its Amritapuri campus
February 18, 2021: Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham has become the first Indian University to partner with European Union’s Human Brain Project (HBP) that has 143 university institutes in Europe working together to better understand brain function and develop solutions to cure brain diseases. A MoU was signed between Amrita and Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland for working together on the Project, in collaboration with the University of Pavia in Italy and Aix-Marseille University in France.
The development comes close on the heels of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham launching the Amrita Mind Brain Center (AMBC) at its Amritapuri campus in Kerala to strengthen fundamental research related to brain, cognition, computations and neuro-engineering. Led by Associate Professor Dr. Shyam Diwakar as its Director, the Center will develop new technologies to investigate brain function, dysfunction, and therapy.
Talking about the MoU, Dr. Shyam Diwakar, Associate Professor, Amrita School of Biotechnology, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, said: “Functional signals directed by MRI techniques are widely used in specialty hospitals to monitor brain activity non-invasively. However, to connect these signals to the underlying activity of brain cells or neurons has been a challenge. In a project called BOLDsim, which is a part of Human Brain Project’s voucher grant, we will develop a new computational tool for modeling functional signals in the brain using cellular data-driven models.”
The BOLDsim projectwill model special signals generated by brain activity, called the blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) signals, using cellular-level data available with the HBP’s Brain Simulation Platform as well as with the team of Prof. Egidio D’Angelo of University of Pavia in Italy. This model will be made freely available to neuroscience researchers and to the whole-brain simulator called ‘The Virtual Brain’ that is being developed at Aix-Marseille University, France. Modeling will allow experts a clearer look to understand how brain conditions manifest and to point changes in neural circuits during certain healthy or disease conditions as seen in patients. The HBP project will run until 2023, although its first-level stage is expected to be completed by October 2021.
Said Dr. Shyam Diwakar: “Neuroscientists often want to understand health and disease in the brain and spinal cord from both cellular and behavioral levels to correctly map how a disease affects a person. Since 2009, we at Amrita have been developing models of cerebellum and how its signals are affected during various conditions. We have been using experimental data and computer simulations to develop a better understanding of how the brain operates. The BOLDsimproject will enhance the usability of our computer models and scale a new dimension towards assessing brain health and disease. It will allow a new understanding of how the brain computes, in addition to being used as medical prediction models.”
Said Dr. Venkat Rangan, Vice-Chancellor, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham: “I am very happy that Amrita has become the first University in India to partner with EU’s Human Brain Project and will model a simulator for better understanding of brain conditions and brain function. Amrita is a research-intensive institution that has over the last 15 years established more than 180 collaborations with the top-500 world-ranked universities. This MoU will add a new dimension to our university’s cutting-edge neuroscience research.”
