The Smile Torch arrived in Bangalore on November 10 to spread awareness on cleft

Smile Train, the world’s largest cleft care charitable organization, along with its partner hospital, Bhagwan Mahaveer Jain Hospital announced key initiatives to address the current cleft burden in India. Currently, more than 35,000 babies are born with cleft lips and/or palates every year in India, and providing safe surgery for children at scale is critical, as Smile Train looks to support 1 million surgeries in the next ten years. The Smile Train Bhagwan Mahaveer Jain Cleft Fellowship, in affiliation with Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, is first-of-its-kind in Bengaluru. This will help in capacity building of young oral and maxillofacial surgeons to bridge the deficit for quality and safe cleft surgery. The fellowship will cover all the aspects of cleft care, including different types of surgical procedures and management of comprehensive cleft care.

In addition, Smile Train India and Bhagwan Mahaveer Jain Hospital organised a walkathon in support of children born with clefts, to coincide with the arrival of The Smile Torch to Bengaluru on Sunday, November 10, 2019. The Smile Torch was flagged off from Varanasi in February this year to commemorate the National Cleft Day on February 8, 2019 and has already travelled across 13 states of the country.

Smile Train has supported 38,000+ cleft surgeries in Karnataka since 2001, through its network of seven partner hospitals in Bengaluru, Belagavi, Mangaluru, Raichur, Gulbarga, Davangere and Dharwad. Lakhs of untreated cases of cleft exist in the country due to monetary constraints or lack of awareness. Smile Train India has supported 600,000+ cleft surgeries in India through a pan-India network of 150 partner hospitals.

Speaking on the occasion, Renu Mehta, Area Director, Strategic Projects – South Asia, SmileTrain said, “Since 2000, Smile Train has built a sustainable ecosystem to alleviate the cleft burden in India. This involves working with partner hospitals, government initiatives like the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) under the National Health Mission and through large scale awareness building initiatives like the Smile Torch.” She further added, “Partnering with the government is critical to achieve scale as the RBSK Program includes provisions for child health screening and early intervention services which is critical in the cleft conditions. Timely detection of cleft conditions is necessary for children to lead a healthy and productive life.”

Dr. Bonanthaya Krishnamurthy, a renowned oral and maxillofacial surgeon and Smile Train Project Director at Bhagwan Mahaveer Jain Hospital said, “Bhagwan Mahaveer Jain Hospital has been a proud partner of Smile Train India for 15 years. We have focused on and delivered comprehensive cleft care to nearly 9000 cleft patients. The launch of the Fellowship is a significant step in capacity building and we hope it will be a benchmark for other hospitals in Smile Train’s network to follow.”

” Announcing the Bamboo Cultural Festival in Bangalore to be held on 18th September 2019 at Lalbagh Botanical Gardens, Bangalore”

As the world grapples with the implications of global warming, which is wreaking havoc recklessly world over, more recently marked by the exhortations of the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi at the 14th Conference of Parties of the United Nations Conference on Combating Desertification, a key focus has been on how to bring back biodiversity that we have so rapidly lost in recent decades, and restore balance of nature. Multiple efforts are being invested in this project that is nothing less than an effort to save humanity’s chance to survive peacefully on this only living planet. Re-greening our planet, by allowing forests and grasslands to re-generate, and wetlands to thrive again, as also cooling and calming our overburdened and over-heated cities, and in the process capturing too much carbon that has dangerously ended up in our atmosphere, are commonly spoken of. But how is one to achieve that in the little time left to restore planetary scale ecological balance, given that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has held the world has but only a dozen years to get its act right.A key determinant of the success of such rapidly needed interventions is that it has to be accessible to all, cost effective, resilient and capable of self-regeneration. Quite astonishing, the answer to this predicament has always been before us, and almost everywhere. It has been in the propagation of Bamboo the fast growing grass that has multiple uses: in construction, as a soil binder, as a soil builder, in purifying water, in carbon sequestration, as biodiversity haven, and as provider of nutritious food. India is home to tens of varieties of this wonder plant, and there is a long and hoary tradition, still surviving amongst the knowledge systems of tribal and forest dependent communities, of nurturing bamboo to support our diverse demands and in a most sustainable way.Yet, it is a matter of concern that the propagation of bamboo has remained peripheral to our re-greening efforts. A major reason for this situation is the systemic reliance on promoting trees as a method of addressing our forestry needs, and of late in tackling climate change Bamboo cultivation, meanwhile, despite all its potential, remains neglected.

The Bamboo Society of India was established in 1980 to fill this critical gap in our systems approach, and to promote the cultivation and propagation of this plant as part of a agro-forestry approach to tackle environmental degradation. Much progress has been achieved since, and there is still a long way to go.To assist in this process of propagating bamboo, the Bamboo Society of India’s Karnataka Chapter has organized a Bamboo Cultural Festival on 18 September 2019 at Lalbagh Botanical Gardens, on the occasion of World Bamboo Day. The Chief Guest of this special and unprecedented event is octogenarian Mr. S. G. Neginhal, IFS (Retd.) who set off the greening movement in Bangalore and many other metropolises across India during the 1980s. Mr. Punathi Sridhar, IFS, PCCF and HFF ,Department of Forest, Government of Karnataka will grace the occasion along with other dignitaries. The details of the programme, which includes workshops on the multiple uses of bamboo, a special bamboo music concert, an unique bamboo fabric based fashion show, and sales of bamboo based food and handicrafts, is enclosed.This Bamboo Cultural Festival in your esteemed dailies and media so that the public at large will become aware of this event and participate in large number. Together we can ensure our cities and villages are re-greened very quickly, with little economic burden and maximal socio-economic and ecological benefits, all due to the wondrous capacity of Bamboo.

All we need to do is to plant it, take care of it for a while, and then wait has it erupts into life to green our landscapes and bring back biodiversity and more.

Platinum jubilee (75th year) celebrations of Sound and Cinematography courses at Bangalore. The alumni of SJ Polytechnic, Bangalore from sound and cinematography courses they want to bring to attention that these courses started in 1943 have completed 75 years this year. This was the first such institution to train cinematographers and sound engineers in Asia.

In 1943, the visionary-statesman- engineer Sir M. Viswesarayya (Sir MV) was instrumental in introducing these courses. He foresaw the huge demand for such professionals in future and intreduced these courses which is the first film institute in not just India but the whole of Asia. His move was fully supported by the then Maharaja of Mysore, Shri Jayachamarajendra Wodeyar. These have helped in contributing to the human resources in these fields for various purposes both in the private sector and the government sector. Alumni cameramen and sound engineers are spread across Films Division, Doordarshan, AIR, several public sector undertakings and ISRO to name a few. Besides this, they have contributed to the film industry, in covering sports, wildlife photography to name a few. Sh. VK Murthy, an ace cinematographer who made a mark for himself in Bombay from the first batch brought laurels to SJP when he was awarded the highest honour in film industry, the Dada Saheb Phalke award, which was the only time a technician was decorated with. As alumni, they are indebted to the two stalwarts and as a token of recalling their services, they are meeting in Bengaluru on August 22nd at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. If these visionaries had not started the courses, many of them would not have been what they are today. They felt that it is their duty to recall their services.

ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು , 12ನೇ ಆಗಸ್ಟ್ 2019 : ಯಶವಂತಪುರದ ಕೊಲಂಬಿಯಾ ಏಷಿಯಾ ರೆಫರಲ್ ಅಸ್ಪತ್ರೆಯು ಅಪರೂಪ ಪ್ರಕರಣವಾದ ಎಬಿಒಐ ಮೂತ್ರಪಿಂಡ ಕಸಿಯನ್ನು ಯಶಸ್ವಿಯಾಗಿ ನಡೆಸಿತು . 48 ವರ್ಷದ ಹೆಂಡತಿ , ವೃತ್ತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅರಿವಳಿಕೆ ತಜ್ಞರಾಗಿರುವ 55 ವರ್ಷದ ಗಂಡನಿಗೆ ಮೂತ್ರಪಿಂಡ ದಾನ ಮಾಡಿದರು . ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಡಾ ಸುಮತಿ ಕುಮಾರ್ ಅವರು 2018ರಲ್ಲಿ ದೀರ್ಘಕಾಲದ ಮೂತ್ರಪಿಂಡದ ವೈಫಲ್ಯದಿಂದ ಬಳಲುತ್ತಿರುವುದು ತಿಳಿದುಬಂತು ಮತ್ತು ಕಳೆದ ಒಂದು ವರ್ಷದಿಂದ ಔಷಧಿಗಳಿಂದ ಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆ ಪಡೆಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು . ಆಟದ ಮೈದೊಳಗೆ , ಮಧುಮೇಹ ಮತ್ತು ಅಧಿಕ ರಕ್ತದೊತ್ತಡದಿಂದ ಬಳಲುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು . ಈ ವರ್ಷದ ಮಾರ್ಚ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರ ಮೂತ್ರಪಿಂಡದ ಕಾಯಿಲೆ ಉಲ್ಬಣಗೊಂಡಿತು ಮತ್ತು ಮುಂದಿನ ಕೆಲವು ತಿಂಗಳುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಡಯಾಲಿಸಿಸ್‌ ಅಥವಾ ಮೂತ್ರಪಿಂಡದ ಕಸಿ ಮಾಡಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವಂತೆ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಸಲಹೆ ನೀಡಲಾಗಿತ್ತು . ಸ್ವತಃ ವೈದ್ಯರಾಗಿದ್ದ ಅವರು ದೀರ್ಘಕಾಲದವರೆಗೆ ಡಯಾಲಿಸಿಸ್‌ಗೆ ಒಳಗಾಗುವ ತೊಂದರೆಗಳನ್ನು ಕಂಡಿದ್ದರು ಮತ್ತು ಇದು ಅವರ ವೃತ್ತಿಗೆ ಅಡ್ಡಿಯಾಗಬಹುದೆಂದು ಆತಂಕಗೊಂಡಿದ್ದರು , ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಅವರು ಮೂತ್ರಪಿಂಡ ಕಸಿ ಮಾಡಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ನಿರ್ಧರಿಸಿದರು . ಅವರು ಮೂತ್ರಪಿಂಡ ಕಸಿಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ವಿಚಾರಿಸಲು ಪ್ರಾರಂಭಿಸಿದರು . ಅವರ ಯಾವುದೇ ಸಂಬಂಧಿಕರು ಮೂತ್ರಪಿಂಡವನ್ನು ದಾನ ಮಾಡಲು ಮುಂದೆ ಬರಲಿಲ್ಲ ಮತ್ತು ಅವರ ಪತ್ನಿ ಮಾತ್ರ ದಾನ ಮಾಡಲು ಸಿದ್ದರಿದ್ದರು . ಆದರೆ ಅವರ ರಕ್ತದ ಗುಂಪು ಎ ನೆಗೆಟಿವ್‌ ಆಗಿದ್ದು , ಅದು ಬಿ ಪಾಸಿಟಿವ್ ರಕ್ತದ ಗುಂಪನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿರುವ ಅವರ ಪತಿಗೆ ಹೊಂದಿಕೆಯಾಗುತ್ತಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ . ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಭಾರತದ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಆಸ್ಪತ್ರೆಗಳು ಎಬಿಒಐ ಮೂತ್ರಪಿಂಡ ಕಸಿಯನ್ನು ಮಾಡಲು ನಿರಾಕರಿಸಿದ್ದರಿಂದ ಇದು ಅವರನ್ನು ತುಂಬಾ ನಿರಾಶೆಗೀಡುಮಾಡಿತು . ಇದರ ಕಾರ್ಯವಿಧಾನಗಳು ಸಂಕೀರ್ಣ ಮತ್ತು ಅಪಾಯಕಾರಿ , ಸಂಬಂಧಿತ ವೈದ್ಯಕೀಯ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿರುವುದು ಹಾಗೂ ಸ್ವತಃ ವೈದ್ಯರಾಗಿರುವ ಕಾರಣಗಳಿಂದ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಎಬಿಒಐ ಕಸಿ ಮಾಡಲು ನಿರಾಕರಿಸಲಾಗಿತ್ತು . ಯಶವಂತಪುರದ ಕೊಲಂಬಿಯಾ ಏಷಿಯಾ ರೆಫರಲ್ ಆಸ್ಪತ್ರೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರನ್ನು ನೆಫ್ರಾಲಜಿಸ್ಟ್ ಮತ್ತು ಕಸಿ ವೈದ್ಯ ಮುಖ್ಯ ಸಲಹೆಗಾರ ಡಾ ದೀಪಕ್ ಕುಮಾರ್ ಸಿ ಪರೀಕ್ಷಿಸಿದರು ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರಾಥಮಿಕ ಪರೀಕ್ಷೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಒಳಗಾಗುವಂತೆ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಸೂಚಿಸಿದರು ಮತ್ತು ನಂತರ ಅವರ ಪತ್ನಿಯ ರಕ್ತದ ಗುಂಪಿನ ವಿರುದ್ದ ಪ್ರತಿಕಾಯ ಮಟ್ಟ ಅಂದಾಜು 1 . 64 , ಇದು ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ಎಣಿಕೆಯಾಗಿದೆ . ಪ್ರತಿಕಾಯಗಳ ಈ ಹಂತಗಳನ್ನು ನೋಡಿದಾಗ , ಅವರಿಗೆ ಸಲಹೆ ನೀಡಲಾಯಿತು ಮತ್ತು ಸವಿಸ್ತಾರವಾಗಿ ಪರೀಕ್ಷಿಸಲಾಯಿತು ಮತ್ತು ನಂತರ ಕಸಿ ಮಾಡಲು ನಿರ್ಧರಿಸಲಾಯಿತು . ಆರಂಭದಲ್ಲಿ , ಸ್ವತ : ಅರಿವಳಿಕೆ ತಜ್ಞರಾಗಿರುವ ಡಾ ಸುಮತಿ , ಅದರ ಕಾರ್ಯವಿಧಾನದ ಸಂಕೀರ್ಣತೆ ಮತ್ತು ಸ್ವರೂಪವನ್ನು ಪರಿಗಣಿಸಿ ಎಬಿಒಐ ಕಸಿಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಆತಂಕಗೊಂಡಿದ್ದರು . ಅಲ್ಲದೆ ಕಳೆದ 5 ವರ್ಷಗಳಿಂದ ಭಾರತದಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆಲವೇ ಕೆಲವು ಕೇಂದ್ರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಇದನ್ನು ನಡೆಸಲಾಗುತ್ತಿದೆ . ಆದರೆ ಕಾಲಕ್ರಮೇಣಾ ಕೌನ್ಸಲಿಂಗ್ ನಿಂದಾಗಿ ಅವರು ಶಸ್ತ್ರಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆಗೆ ಒಳಗಾಗುವ ವಿಶ್ವಾಸವನ್ನು ಬೆಳೆಸಿಕೊಂಡರು .

ಮುಂದಿನ ಒಂದು ತಿಂಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರು ವೈದ್ಯಕೀಯವಾಗಿ ಕಸಿಗೆ ಸಿದ್ದರಾಗಿದ್ದರು ಮತ್ತು ಈ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರ ಮೂತ್ರಪಿಂಡದ ಕಾರ್ಯಗಳು ಮತ್ತಷ್ಟು ಹದಗೆಟ್ಟವು ಮತ್ತು ಕಸಿ ಮಾಡುವ ಮೊದಲು ಅವರ ಆರೋಗ್ಯ ಸ್ಥಿತಿಯನ್ನು ಸುಧಾರಿಸಲು ಡಯಾಲಿಸಿಸ್‌ಅನ್ನು ಪ್ರಾರಂಭಿಸಲಾಯಿತು . ಎಬಿಒಐ ಕಸಿ ಮಾಡುವಿಕೆಯ ಮೂಲ ತತ್ವವೆಂದರೆ ರಕ್ತದ ಗುಂಪಿನ ವಿರುದ್ದ ಪ್ರತಿಕಾಯಗಳನ್ನು ತೆಗೆಯುವುದು ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರತಿಕಾಯಗಳನ್ನು ತೆಗೆಯುವ ಈ ವಿಧಾನವನ್ನು ಕಸಿ ಶಸ್ತ್ರಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆಯ 3 ದಿನಗಳ ಮೊದಲು ಪ್ರಾರಂಭಿಸಲಾಯಿತು . ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರತಿಕಾಯಗಳ ಮಟ್ಟವನ್ನು ಸ್ವೀಕಾರಾರ್ಹ ಶ್ರೇಣಿಗೆ ಇಳಿಸಿದಾಗ , ಶಸ್ತ್ರಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆಯನ್ನು ನಡೆಸಲಾಯಿತು . ಕಸಿ ಮಾಡಿದ ನಂತರ ಪ್ರತಿಕಾಯಗಳ ಮಟ್ಟವು ಮರುಕಳಿಸದಂತೆ ನಿಯಂತ್ರಿಸಲು ಮತ್ತು ತಡೆಯಲು ಅವರಿಗೆ ಔಷಧಿಗಳನ್ನು ನೀಡಲಾಯಿತು . “ ಅವರ ಪತ್ನಿಗೆ ಬಲ ಮೂತ್ರಪಿಂಡದಲ್ಲಿ 2 ಅಪಧಮನಿಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಎಡ ಮೂತ್ರಪಿಂಡದಲ್ಲಿ 3 ಅಪಧಮನಿಗಳು ಇದ್ದುದರಿಂದ ಶಸ್ತ್ರಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆಯೂ ಸಹ ಸವಾಲಿನದ್ದಾಗಿತ್ತು , ಅದು ಬಹಳ ಅಪರೂಪ ಮತ್ತು ಅಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿತ್ತು . ಕಸಿ ಮಾಡುವಿಕೆಗಾಗಿ 2 ಅಪಧಮನಿಗಳಿದ್ದ ಬಲ ಮೂತ್ರಪಿಂಡವನ್ನು ತೆಗೆಯಲು ನಿರ್ಧರಿಸಿದೆವು . ಕಸಿ ಮಾಡಿದ ನಂತರ ರೋಗಿಯ ಮೂತ್ರಪಿಂಡದ ಕಾರ್ಯ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿತ್ತು ಮತ್ತು ಕಸಿ ಮಾಡಿದ 3 ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ರೋಗಿಗೆ ನಡೆಯಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯವಾಯಿತು , ” ಎಂದು ಯಶವಂತಪುರದ ಕೊಲಂಬಿಯಾ ಏಷಿಯಾ ರೆಫರಲ್ ಆಸ್ಪತ್ರೆಯ ಮೂತ್ರಪಿಂಡ ಕಸಿ ಶಸ್ತ್ರಚಿಕಿತ್ಸಾ ವಿಭಾಗದ ಮುಖ್ಯಸ್ಥ ಡಾ ಅಜಿತ್ ಕೆ ಹುಲಿಗೋಲ್ ಹೇಳಿದರು . ಒಂದೇ ರಕ್ತದ ಗುಂಪನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿರುವ ಅಂಗದಾನಿಗಳ ಕೊರತೆ ಮತ್ತು ಕೊನೆಯ ಹಂತದ ಮೂತ್ರಪಿಂಡದ ಕಾಯಿಲೆಯ ಘಟನೆಯ ಹೆಚ್ಚಳದಿಂದಾಗಿ ಎಬಿಒಐ ಕಸಿ ಮಾಡುವಿಕೆಯು ಆದ್ಯತೆಯ ಆಯ್ಕೆಯಾಗಿದೆ . ದಾನಿಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಸ್ವೀಕರಿಸುವವರು ಎರಡು ವಿಭಿನ್ನ ರಕ್ತದ ಗುಂಪುಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿರುವುದರಿಂದ ಪ್ರಕ್ರಿಯೆಯು ನಿರ್ಣಾಯಕವಾಗಿದೆ . ಮತ್ತು ಈ ಪ್ರಕ್ರಿಯೆಯನ್ನು ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಎಚ್ಚರಿಕೆಯಿಂದ ನಿರ್ವಹಿಸಬೇಕಾಗಿದೆ , ಎಂದು ಕಳೆದ 1 ವರ್ಷದಲ್ಲಿ ಉತ್ತಮ ಯಶಸ್ಸಿನೊಂದಿಗೆ 7 ಎಬಿಒಐ ಕಸಿ ಮಾಡುವಿಕೆಯ ಪ್ರಕರಣವನ್ನು ನಡೆಸಿದ ಯಶವಂತಪುರದ ಕೊಲಂಬಿಯಾ ಏಷಿಯಾ ರೆಫರಲ್ ಆಸ್ಪತ್ರೆಯ ನೆಫ್ರಾಲಜಿಸ್ಟ್ ಮತ್ತು ಕಸಿ ತಜ್ಞ – ಮುಖ್ಯ ಸಲಹೆಗಾರ ಡಾ ದೀಪಕ್ ಕುಮಾರ್ ಸಿ ಹೇಳಿದರು , “ ನಾನು ಅನುಭವಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ನೋವುಗಳಿಂದ ನನ್ನನ್ನು ರಕ್ಷಿಸಲು ನನ್ನ ಹೆಂಡತಿ ಮುಂದೆ ಬಂದಿದ್ದಕ್ಕೆ ನಾನು ತುಂಬಾ ಕೃತಜ್ಞನಾಗಿದ್ದೇನೆ , ನಾನು ಎಬಿಒಐ ಕಸಿ ಮಾಡಬೇಕೇ ಎಂದು ಗೊಂದಲಕ್ಕೆ ಒಳಗಾಗಿದ್ದೆ , ಆದರೆ ಯಶವಂತಪುರದ ಕೊಲಂಬಿಯಾ ಏಷಿಯಾ ರೆಫರಲ್ ಆಸ್ಪತ್ರೆಯ ವೈದ್ಯರು ಕೌನೆ . ಲಿಂಗ್ ಮಾಡಿ ನನಗೆ ಆತ್ಮವಿಶ್ವಾಸ ತುಂಬಿದರು , ಯಶಸ್ವಿಯಾಗಿ ಶಸ್ತ್ರಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆ ನೀಡಿ , ನನಗೆ ಹೊಸ ಜೀವನವನ್ನು ನೀಡಿದ ವೈದ್ಯರಿಗೆ ನನ್ನ ಹತ್ತೂರ್ವಕ ಧನ್ಯವಾದಗಳು , ” ಎಂದರು ಡಾ ಸುಮತಿ ಕುಮಾರ್
