Apollo Cancer Centres launches “ArtCan” to raise awareness about Breast Cancer

For the first time in the country, artists and survivors join hands to win over cancer

Bangalore, October 31, 2022: The Apollo Cancer Centres (ACC), ranked among the world’s best cancer hospitals, launches – ArtCan, a unique initiative which uses art as a medium to spread awareness on Breast Cancer. Apollo Cancer Centres joined hands with mural artists and survivors to curate art that educates and empowers every woman about the importance of regular self-breast examination.

Through ancient Kerala Mural Arts, 8 steps of self-breast examination bring attention to the issue of breast cancer. Each frame reflects the story of a woman who discovered this condition while performing a self-breast examination, acted on time and defeated cancer. These eight steps have also been depicted in a book format called ‘Chitra Sutra’.

The Mural Arts were unveiled today at Hotel ITC Gardenia, Bengaluru. This unique initiative was inaugurated by Dr Jyotsna Srikanth, an internationally acclaimed violinist in presence of the eminent artist Saji KT, breast cancer experts, and winners.

Sharing his thoughts at the launch of ArtCan campaign, Dr Jyotsna Srikanth, an internationally acclaimed violinist, said, “It gives me great pleasure to be a part of the campaign ‘ArtCan’. Art facilitates communication between patients and healthcare personnel by bringing forth insights from the patients’ view that can be communicated to the world. I appreciate Apollo Cancer Centres’ use of art as a medium to educate and raise awareness about self-breast examination. I’m hoping that this initiative will reach women from all over the country and help them win over breast cancer.”

Mr Dinesh Madhavan, President Group Oncology & International, Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Limited, said, “In keeping with our vision of being at the forefront of cancer research, we have launched the ‘ArtCan’ breast cancer awareness campaign. It’s a popular belief that life imitates art and hence, art has the power to transcend languages and cultural barriers. Our initiative, ArtCan, will create a silent conversation and leave a deep impression on the audience. Breast cancer is the most diagnosed cancer globally and accounts for 25% of all cancer cases in women. So, early detection is the key to better outcomes. We believe an ancient Kerala mural art is a unique medium to create awareness about breast cancer and the importance of self-breast examination.”

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Jayanti Thumsi, Consultant-Breast Oncology, said, “In 2022, over 20 lakh cases of breast cancer have been witnessed so far. Apollo Cancer Centres has been a leader in oncology and has treated multiple complex cancer cases. Understanding and detecting breast cancer at the right time can make a difference in saving a life. This initiative will convey our message to the women to be aware of the symptoms of breast cancer and understand the importance of early detection and breast self-examination.”

Sharing her experience as a cancer winner, Anuradha, said, “Apollo Cancer Centre has been my pillar of strength throughout my journey of winning over cancer. Breast cancer came with stigmas and loads of challenges, but the timely medical treatment and tender loving care of Apollo helped me through. As a survivor myself, in line with this initiative of ArtCan, I encourage women all around India to get regularly tested for breast cancer. The early detection not only increases the chances of survival but can be treated in the best way possible without complications.”

“It was truly fulfilling to work on this one-of-a-kind project, ArtCan. We are glad that Apollo Cancer Centres is using this powerful medium of storytelling through traditional Indian art to disseminate important medical information. Information that can save thousands of lives. At the same time, this effort is shining a spotlight on India’s proud artistic heritage and our master artists, which really aligns with our mission,” said Saji KT, Kerala mural artist.

Breast Cancer is a result of multiple factors which include environmental and lifestyle changes. In most cases, it is due to anomalies that arise out of the aging process, while in 5-10% of the cases, it is genetically inherited. Early detection is the best protection against breast cancer. Regular self-examination and mammography at regular intervals have proven to be most effective in early diagnosis and in achieving better results in treatment and cure. Apollo Hospitals has been a pioneer in introducing comprehensive screening protocols for the early detection of breast cancer.

Himalaya brings back “Ek Nayi Muskaan” – a flagship initiative aimed at spreading awareness on cleft lip and palate in children

Bengaluru, October 8, 2022: Himalaya Wellness Company, one of India’s leading wellness brands, announced the launch of its 7th edition of “Ek Nayi Muskaan” in Bengaluru today. Muskaan is the flagship social impact initiative that aims to create awareness on the condition of cleft lips and palates in children. This initiative has been co-created and implemented in partnership with Smile Train, the world largest cleft-focused NGO dedicated to spreading awareness on cleft deformities and supporting this facial birth difference and supporting 100% free cleft surgeries and comprehensive cleft care for the underprivileged. To commemorate the launch this year, Himalaya, organized an event to address the societal stigma that children face due to cleft and bring about a change in society to recognize that children with clefts can live full and healthy lives. The event saw many engaging activities such as gaming zones, art workshops, and interactive installations for children. They also got an opportunity to engage and interact with various Instagram influencers such as Neha Chatlani, Namrata Kumari, Swati Gandhi, Diksha, and Palak Bhandari at the event.

The event saw speakers who shared their success stories with children, helping them get inspired from some incredible narratives on cleft.

Through this initiative, Himalaya Wellness Company and Smile Train India are working to spread awareness about the birth condition that affects one in 700 births in India, but still faces a shocking lack of awareness among much of the population. This initiative also seeks to support families by providing free cleft treatment for children in need across the country.

Himalaya Wellness Company has persisted on its aim to bring happiness to children across India in tandem with its mission to spread “Wellness in every Home and Happiness in every Heart.” Himalaya, along with Smile Train, has been on the mission to spread the joy of smiles since the start of this initiative in 2016. Together, they have enabled nearly 1,100 cleft repair surgeries so far and helped in bringing smiles to the faces of these children who deserve a healthy and happy smile.

“Muskaan is an initiative that is very close to our hearts. Through the years, we have seen hundreds of children get their chance at a healthier and happier life because of the cleft repair surgeries. Our hope and objective, therefore, is to continue to see many such happy faces in the future. As a company, we have always believed in Happiness through Wellness to be the core of our operation and function. This initiative by Himalaya Lip Care helps us take the mission on-ground and create that impact we want to see in the world. With Muskaan, we intend to partner in the journey of these brave children towards achieving their dreams and living a happy and healthy life.” said Mr. Sushil Goswami, General Manager – Consumer Products Division, Himalaya Wellness Company.

Last year, due to the pandemic, the Muskaan event was conducted on an online platform and was still able to transform the lives of more than 130 children in need of a cleft repair surgery. This year intends to be no exception. On the purchase of every premium lip balm, Himalaya Wellness Company will donate a dedicated amount towards the initiative.

Emphasizing the initiative, Ms. Anjali Katoch, Senior Director Communication and Development, Smile Train India, explained, “Children with untreated clefts face difficulties in eating, breathing, hearing, and speaking, with increased susceptibility to ENT infections. This can greatly affect their mental health and social lives as well. A cleft surgery is life transforming; however, hundreds of thousands of children in India still await treatment due to poverty and lack of awareness. Through Muskaan and our partnership with Himalaya Wellness Company, we continue to aim to increase awareness about clefts and make free cleft surgeries and comprehensive cleft care easily accessible to more and more children across India.”

SPARSH Hospitals partner with MGM Healthcare, Chennai to offer Heart and Lung Failure management and Transplant program in Bengaluru

  • This new initiative will cater to the increasing number of patients in Karnataka in need of heart and lung Failure management and transplant
  • The program will be led by India’s largest and highly experienced team of transplant specialists from MGM Healthcare, Chennai who have completed over 500 heart and lung transplants in India
  • Bengaluru, 30th September 2022: SPARSH Group of Hospitals has partnered with MGM Healthcare, Chennai, a leading quaternary care super-specialty hospital in Chennai, to establish a heart and lung failure management and transplant program in Bengaluru. As a part of the initiative, SPARSH in association with MGM Healthcare will offer a comprehensive transplant program covering heart and lung transplants. An estimated 5 lakh Indians die each year waiting for organ transplants. A report by NOTTO (National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation) suggests that close to 50,000 people suffer from heart failure in India each year, yet only 10 to 15 heart transplants are undertaken annually. The deceased organ donation rate in India at less than 1 percent per million population, is a major handicap and translates to less than one person per million opting to donate their organs. Superstitions and stigma, lack of transplant coordinators, and lack of required infrastructure for certifying and maintaining brain-dead patients are the reasons behind the low donation numbers in India. While the lack of organ donation is one side of the story, another aspect is the absence of required processes, qualified professionals, and necessary hospital infrastructure facilities. SPARSH Multi-Organ Transplant Centre has been designed to address the gaps that exist in organ transplant and the management of organ failure. Over the last several years, SPARSH has been undertaking pioneering work in the areas of Liver, Kidney, in Karnataka. With this collaboration with India’s Largest Heart and Lung Transplant Team at MGM Healthcare, Chennai, SPARSH will now provide heart and lung transplants for patients with end-stage heart and lung failure. In the event of availability of organs, a team of heart & lung transplant experts from MGM Healthcare will carry out the procedure at the state-of-the-art SPARSH Multi Organ Transplant Centre at Mysore Road, Bangalore. SPARSH will provide the necessary pre operative transplant work-up. MGM Healthcare’s heart and lung transplant team is led by Dr. KR Balakrishnan, a renowned cardiothoracic surgeon and heart-lung transplant specialist with over 30 years of experience in the field. Dr. Balakrishnan has a record of completing over 503 heart and lung transplants and he has performed over 16,000 cardiac surgeries for various types of heart diseases and disorders.
  • Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Sharan Shivaraj Patil, Chairman, SPARSH Hospital, said, “We are happy to partner with MGM Healthcare, Chennai to offer a comprehensive and state-of-the-art heart and lung transplant programme for the people of Karnataka.
  • Dr. KR Balakrishnan is a leader in the field of heart and lung transplantation. His expertise and in-depth understanding of the intricacies of heart and lung transplant will allow us to build a transplant program in the shortest time, and offer the best of care for our patients.” “At SPARSH Hospital, our aim is to increase the overall organ transplant numbers in Karnataka by significantly improving the utilization of organs. With our infrastructure, skilled paramedics, and critical care support along with MGM Healthcare’s experienced multidisciplinary team of experts, we want to mitigate the gaps in organ transplants in Karnataka”, Dr. Sharan added.
  • Dr R Ravi Kumar, Sr.Consultant & Associate Clinical Lead -Cardiology & Heart Failure Program, Cardiology & Heart Failure Program, MGM Healthcare, said, “Heart failure is a condition where the heart has to work much harder to pump blood and meet the body’s needs. If identified early, there is a much better chance of treating the condition. Heart transplant for end-stage heart failure has shown tremendous success. At MGM Healthcare, we have seen many stories of long-term survivorship and improved quality of life post transplant. Through this partnership with SPARSH, we want to impact many more lives and emphasize the positive impact it can have”
  • Dr. KR Balakrishnan, Chairman & Director, Institute of Cardiac Sciences, Director of Heart and Lung Transplantation Programme and Mechanical Circulatory Support, MGM Healthcare, said, “Organ transplants require a well seasoned multidisciplinary team of experts and the availability of advanced infrastructure to ensure best possible outcomes for patients. Currently, there is a dearth of state-of-the art transplant centres and expertise, which has led to a decrease in donor heart utilisation. We aim to address this issue and ensure timely services to those in need of heart and lung transplantation. We look forward to a fruitful collaboration with SPARSH”
  • Dr. Prashanth Rajagopalan, Director, MGM Healthcare, said, “MGM Healthcare is happy to extend its seasoned expertise in the space of Heart & Lung transplant to SPARSH Hospital. With this association, we intend to reach out to more people who would be in urgent need for transplant in this region. The expertise coupled with infrastructure paves the way for a successful endeavour to enhance the patient centric approach of MGM Healthcare.”
